QUICK ANSWER
Remember These First
You earn An Audience with the King by farming Tribute in Ritual encounters and filling the Audience bar, then scanning the Atlas for the encounter at Tier 14+.
The fight layers Portent Vapours (debuff clouds), a Wisp Maze, and a final chaos phase. Cap Chaos Resistance and keep moving — standing still on a platform is deadly.

FAQ
Top search questions: entry, materials, failure cost
Is this the same King in the Mists from Act 1?
No. Act 1 has a story-version King in the Mists. This page covers the Ritual PINNACLE version (Audience with the King) that appears at Tier 14+ maps.
Different arena, mechanics (Portent Vapours, Wisp Maze), and rewards (Omen / Unique). If you searched the Act 1 boss, that is a separate encounter.
How do I currently get the Audience / entrance?
Farm Ritual encounters for Tribute, offer it until the Audience bar fills, granting An Audience with the King.
Keep it in your inventory and scan the Atlas; at Tier 14+ the encounter escalates into the true pinnacle fight.
Why can't I stay on a platform?
Portent Vapours and the maze mechanics punish stationary play; platforms are safe spots only briefly. The King's chaos attacks cover ground you must keep leaving.
What's the difference between Guaranteed Omen and Unique chance drop?
An Audience guarantees an Omen (a Ritual currency) on completion. Uniques are a chance drop from the loot pool, not guaranteed.

OVERVIEW
Version Disambiguation
There are TWO King in the Mists encounters in PoE2. The Act 1 story version is a campaign boss you fight during the main quest. This page is the RITUAL PINNACLE version reached via An Audience with the King at Tier 14+.
Do not follow Act 1 guides for this fight — the arena, the Portent Vapours, the Wisp Maze, and the reward structure are all different. If your goal is the campaign boss, that is a separate page.
- Act 1: story boss, no Audience item, different loot.
- Pinnacle (this page): Audience item, Tier 14+, Omen + Unique pool.
- Same name, different fight — read the access section to confirm which you need.
OVERVIEW
Wisp Maze Guide
The Wisp Maze is a sequence of safe lanes between hazard zones. Read it before committing: enter a lane only when the hazard behind you is clearing, and always keep the next lane in view.
Maze failure (getting cornered) and fight failure (death) are different — maze failure just resets positioning; death costs the attempt. Prioritise Affliction Totems and Fetishes so the maze stays navigable.
- Enter a lane as the trailing hazard clears.
- Kill Totems/Fetishes so lanes stay open.
- If cornered, dodge toward the known safe gap, not the wall.
BEFORE THE FIGHT
Pre-Fight Preparation Checklist
| Done | Check | Why it matters | Quick fix |
|---|---|---|---|
| Capped Chaos Resistance Verify chaos res at 75% cap. | The King's final phase and many abilities deal Chaos; uncapped chaos res means rapid death. | Chaos-crafted gear, Chaos Resistance rolls, or a Chaos-charm. | |
| Movement speed Boots with movement speed. | Portent Vapours and maze require constant repositioning. | Movement-speed suffixes or a movement skill. | |
| Wither mitigation Check for sources of Wither (chaos DoT amp). | Wither stacks amplify chaos damage taken; clear them fast. | Flask or passive that removes Wither; kill Wisp sources. | |
| Ranged/melee positioning Plan kiting routes around platforms. | The arena is platform-based; melee must commit, ranged must keep LoS. | Pre-scout platform safe spots in a practice run. |
PHASE BREAKDOWN
Combat Phases
Phase 1 · Phase 1 — Vapours & Maze (100%–~40%)
Trigger: Enter the ritual arena.
Objectives- Clear Portent Vapours clouds.
- Navigate the Wisp Maze without getting cornered.
- Dodge Affliction Totems / Fetishes / Blood Pool.
The King layers Portent Vapours (debuff clouds) and a Wisp Maze. Affliction Totems, Fetishes and Blood Pool appear and must be prioritised.
Platforms are only briefly safe; do not camp them.

ARENA READING
Arena Reading
The pinnacle arena is a platform-based space threaded by a Wisp Maze. Portent Vapours drift across it, and the King uses cages and Rat Tornadoes to restrict movement.
Platforms look safe but Vapours and Totems make them temporary. The maze phase forces you to keep a clear escape route at all times.
- Never camp a platform — Vapours drift over it.
- Keep an exit from any cage/Rat Tornado overlap.
- Use the maze lanes, do not cut across hazards.
BUILD-SPECIFIC STRATEGY
Build Considerations
Chaos Resistance is the single most important stat — the entire fight is chaos-shaped. High movement speed is second. The platform maze favours builds that can both commit (melee) and kite (ranged) without getting cornered.
Wither stacks amplify chaos damage taken; bring a way to clear or avoid them.
- Melee: commit during Totem/Fetish downtime, retreat before Vapours drift.
- Ranged: hold LoS from platforms, kite Rat Tornadoes.
- Minion: bodies can body-block Vapours but die to chaos coverage.
- Avoid low-mobility towers — the maze will corner you.
COMMUNITY EVIDENCE
Community Questions and Evidence
Is this the Act 1 King?
Frequent confusion: players followed Act 1 guides and failed. The pinnacle King needs an Audience item and has different mechanics.
We confirm this page is the Tier 14+ Ritual pinnacle; Act 1 is a separate encounter with separate loot.
No — this is the Ritual pinnacle (Audience item, Tier 14+). Act 1 King is a different fight.
Why do I die on platforms?
Forum posts note Portent Vapours drift over platforms; camping is the common mistake.
Our testing: Vapours apply stacking de-buffs; never camp. Keep rotating.
Platforms are briefly safe only. Keep moving; don't camp.
