Build Overview

This is a two-weapon-set build with two different jobs. Explosive Grenade and utility grenades belong to the grenade set; Explosive Shot belongs to the crossbow set. If Crossbow Shot or a support is attached to the wrong set, the planner can look correct while the live rotation is missing damage or utility.

The campaign is grenade-heavy before Flash Grenade and before Explosive Shot gains enough support. Later mapping can become mostly Explosive Shot, while bosses still reward pre-loading grenades and detonating a prepared field. The transition should be driven by clear feel and gem links, not by copying an old 0.4 breakpoint.

Explosive Grenade and Explosive Shot use different weapon-set and passive assumptions; the guide keeps the grenade and crossbow trees explicit.

  • During early leveling, lead moving enemies over placed grenades.
  • Use the correct Crossbow Shot and weapon set for Explosive Shot.
  • For bosses, pre-place verified grenades, apply the chosen exposure, then detonate or fire while managing reload.

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Clear build identity and staged progression.
  • The primary loop has current 0.5 guide coverage.
  • The guide separates mapping and boss assumptions.

Cons

  • Several mechanics still need current-client reproduction.
  • Endgame creator setups can hide expensive dependencies.
  • Exact support and passive choices may change by variant.

Leveling

  1. Campaign start

Use a verified temporary setup and prioritize a functional weapon or spell focus.

  2. Core skill transition

Swap only after the current gem and resource requirements are met.

  3. Campaign end

Fix resistances, recovery and the main resource loop.

  4. Early maps

Adopt one documented variant instead of mixing endgame snapshots.

Ascendancy

  1. Provisional order

Follow the selected current guide, then confirm every node in the 0.5.4 client before publication.

Passive Tree

  1. Campaign

Take only nodes that support the current leveling skill and defensive requirements.

  2. Early maps

Move to the selected build variant; do not combine incompatible planner snapshots.

Gear

Primary damage slot

  • Appropriate skill levels or weapon damage
  • Variant-compatible modifiers

Do not copy an endgame item without its prerequisites.

Defensive armour

  • Life or the selected defence pool
  • Elemental resistances and recovery

Compare the whole defensive package.

Jewellery and utility

  • Attributes and resource sustain
  • Only verified build-specific modifiers

Prices are not fixed at this time.

Stat Priority

  1. Defensive baselineCap resistances and establish recovery first.
  2. Primary damage scalarUse the scalar shared by both planner and gameplay evidence.
  3. Resource sustainThe main loop must also work against a single target.
  4. Quality of lifeAdd speed or area only after the build is functional.

Upgrade Priority

  1. 1

    Fix defences and requirements.

  2. 2

    Upgrade the main damage slot.

  3. 3

    Stabilize resource generation.

  4. 4

Add the selected variant's core interaction.

  5. 5

Test luxury changes one at a time.

Mapping

Use grenades while early Explosive Shot still feels weak. Once the crossbow link is online, clear with Explosive Shot and reserve grenades for durable packs, crowd control and prepared bursts. Verify weapon-set assignment whenever a skill suddenly loses supports.

Bossing

Before engagement, place the allowed grenades, enter on the correct weapon set, apply the debuff or control layer, then detonate through Explosive Shot. Rebuild the field during forced movement instead of firing into a target with no prepared explosives.

Troubleshooting

The core skill is unavailable

  • Check gem level, form, weapon set and equipment requirements.
  • Return to the documented transition stage.

Single-target loop stops

  • Remove kill-based assumptions.
  • Record every resource before and after the sequence.

Copied endgame gear feels worse

  • Check missing passives, supports and thresholds.
  • Rebuild from the lower verified stage.

Weapon-set and grenade answers

Why did a skill lose its supports after I upgraded gear?

The likely cause is weapon-set assignment. Explosive Shot and grenade skills intentionally use different sets; a new crossbow or copied gem setup can move a skill onto the wrong set.

  • Open each skill's weapon-set assignment.
  • Fire once on each set and inspect the active supports.
  • Do not trust the planner screenshot alone.

Why is early Explosive Shot disappointing?

Before links and the relevant crossbow improve, grenades carry more of the campaign. Use the stronger current tool rather than forcing the final mapping button too early.

Would a bow build be simpler?

Ice Shot Deadeye removes grenade timing and weapon-set complexity, but replaces it with freeze setup, marks and a Snipe boss window.

Patch changes players are reacting to

Old Witchhunter videos may show removed or changed technology; use current patch behavior as the gate.

reddit · Editorial paraphrase

Players entering 0.5 questioned how to rebuild the archetype because familiar 0.4 technology and Olroth-based assumptions no longer transferred cleanly.

This is why the article describes a functional weapon-set baseline before any legacy optimization.

Explosive Grenade Witchhunter discussion

guide · Editorial paraphrase

The maintained guide warns that the period before Flash Grenade is rough, recommends more grenade use while Explosive Shot is weak, and emphasizes pre-loading Explosive Grenades for bosses.

Those observations become explicit stage and rotation checks here.
