Direct answers

Most common cause

Low gem level and a missing socket. A level 1-5 skill gem in a 4-link hits a fraction of a properly levelled, 6-linked setup. Level your main skill gem every time you can, and finish.socketing your weapon or armour.

The biggest DPS lever most players ignore

Weapon base DPS and the support gems linked to your skill. A flat-DPS weapon upgrade often beats a passive point, and the right support gems (more levels, added damage, penetration) multiply everything.

Cheap wins

Quality on gems (20% gives a real bonus), catalysts on jewels, and a single crit multiplier roll. None require rare gear but each adds up fast.

Low-damage checklist

Work top to bottom. The earlier rows usually explain 80% of low-damage complaints.

FactorWhy it mattersFix
Gem levelDamage scales hard with gem levelEquip the highest-level copy; do not run a level 1 gem

Always level your main skill gem first - it is the single highest-impact, zero-cost change.

Where to look: skill, gear, tree

Low damage usually lives in one of three places. Open the matching tab for the fixes.

Your skill gem and its links are the foundation of all damage.

  • Check the gem level of your main skill - if it is not near your character level, that is the problem.
  • Confirm you have a 6-link (or at least 5) on the item holding your main skill.
  • Verify support gems match the skill's tags (physical, elemental, spell, attack).

Why is my damage low?

Frequently asked questions

Is gem level really that important?

Yes. Damage scales steeply with gem level, so a level 1-5 main skill gem does a small fraction of a max-level one. Level it every time you level up.

Do I need a 6-link to do damage?

Not strictly, but each linked support gem multiplies your damage. A 6-link is the single biggest gear-based DPS jump for most builds.

Why cap resistances on gear instead of the tree?

Resistance on the passive tree spends points you could use for damage. Moving resistances onto gear frees those points for damage nodes.
