Direct answers

The core mistake

Relying on a single defense. One-shot deaths happen because no single layer is enough - you need resistances, a real life or energy shield pool, some avoidance (evasion, block, spell suppression), and recovery (charms, flasks) working together.

First fix (always)

Cap your elemental resistances at 75% (fire, cold, lightning). Uncapped resistances are the most common cause of sudden deaths, especially in Act 3 and maps where monster damage jumps.

Chaos is different

Chaos resistance is a separate, harder-to-cap pool, and Chaos damage doubles against Energy Shield. If you are an ES build, Chaos is your biggest one-shot risk.

Defense layers

No layer alone saves you. Build several at once.

LayerHow it helpsBest for
Resistances (75% cap)Reduces elemental hit damage takenEveryone, always
ArmourReduces physical hit damage; better at high lifeMelee, high-HP builds
Energy ShieldSeparate pool; Chaos doubles vs ESES / caster builds
Evasion + Spell SuppressionAvoid hits and suppressed spellsEvasion builds
Block / Spell BlockChance to ignore hits entirelyShield and block builds
Ailment avoidanceAvoid freeze, shock, ignite effectsMaps with ground effects
Charms & FlasksInstant recovery and ailment removalAll builds, boss fights
Damage conversion (Cloak of Flames)Turn physical into fire, then mitigate with fire resPhysical-heavy fights

Cloak of Flames-style conversion lets you turn an unmitigated damage type (physical) into one you have capped (fire), which is a strong layered defense.

Defense by game stage

What to prioritise changes as you progress. Pick your stage.

Early game is about not falling behind on the basics.

  • Keep life on every gear slot you can.
  • Pick up resistance rolls from quest rewards (Cold, Lightning, Fire).
  • Use flasks actively - a dead flask is a dead character.

Why do I keep dying?

Select how you are dying. The tool points to the missing layer.

Frequently asked questions

Is 75% resistance enough by itself?

It is the single most important layer, but no. A 75%-resisted hit can still one-shot a thin life pool. You still need a real pool and usually a second layer.

Why does Chaos hurt my Energy Shield build so much?

Chaos damage doubles against Energy Shield, and Chaos resistance is harder to cap. ES builds should actively socket Chaos resistance or convert the incoming type.

Armour or Evasion - which is better?

Neither is universally better. Armour mitigates physical hits and scales with high life; Evasion avoids hits and pairs with spell suppression. Pick based on your build and add the other as a secondary layer.
