QUICK ANSWER
Direct answers
What is the difference between a prefix and a suffix?
Prefixes and suffixes are the two affix groups an item can hold. By convention, prefixes tend to cover offensive stats such as damage and attributes, while suffixes tend to cover defensive and utility stats such as resistances, life, and flask effects. This is a convention, not a hard rule — exceptions exist.
What does Item Level (iLvl) actually control?
Item Level gates which modifiers can roll on an item and the maximum tier those modifiers can reach. Required Level is a separate gate that controls when your character can equip the item. Monster and area level decide the iLvl of dropped items.
How many affixes can an item have?
Normal items carry no rolled affixes (only an implicit). Magic items can hold up to 1 prefix and 1 suffix. Rare items can hold up to 3 prefixes and 3 suffixes. Uniques have fixed mods and are not normally craftable through these orbs.
How do I see modifier tiers?
On PC, hold Alt to reveal affix tiers and details. On controller, use the advanced modifier toggle. Higher tiers (T1) are stronger; the tier is shown per modifier in the advanced view.
OVERVIEW
Anatomy of an item tooltip
Every item in Path of Exile 2 shows its stats in a tooltip, but the default view hides a lot of useful detail. Pressing the advanced modifier key (Alt on PC, or the controller toggle) expands the tooltip to show each modifier's tier, whether it is local or global, and the item level of the base.
Learning to read this expanded tooltip is the single most useful crafting skill. It tells you not just what an item has, but how strong each roll is and whether a currency could ever push it higher given the item's level.
- Implicit modifiers are inherent to the base type and appear on every version of that item.
- Explicit modifiers are rolled or crafted onto non-normal rarities.
- Enchantments come from a separate source, such as Runes socketed into the item.
- The advanced view reveals per-modifier tiers, which are hidden by default.
REFERENCE TABLE
Tooltip field reference
What each part of the advanced modifier tooltip means and how it affects your crafting decisions.
| Field | What it means | Affects craft? | Common misunderstanding |
|---|---|---|---|
| Item Level (iLvl) | Hidden stat gating which mods and tiers can roll | Yes — gates available mod pool and max tier | Players confuse it with Required Level |
| Required Level | Character level needed to equip the item | No — only gates equip, not rolls | Thought to raise modifier strength |
| Modifier tier (T1, T2...) | Relative strength band of a single modifier | Yes — tier decides roll range | Higher tier number means stronger (it is the opposite) |
| Local / Global tag | Whether the mod affects the item or your character | Yes — matters for stacking and conversion | Assuming all % increased are global |
| Implicit | Innate modifier from the base type | No — cannot be added by orbs | Believed it can be rerolled like explicit mods |
Field labels follow the in-game advanced modifier view; exact wording may vary slightly by client version.
OVERVIEW
Rarity and affix slots
Item rarity defines how many affix slots an item can hold. Normal (white) items have no rolled affixes and only a single implicit modifier. Magic (blue) items can hold up to 1 prefix and 1 suffix. Rare (gold) items can hold up to 3 prefixes and 3 suffixes.
Unique (orange) items have fixed, designer-defined modifiers and are not normally produced through the standard currency-orb crafting path. Special base types may behave differently, so treat the 3-plus-3 Rare cap as the common case rather than an absolute rule for every base.
- Normal: 0 rolled affixes, 1 implicit.
- Magic: up to 1 prefix and 1 suffix.
- Rare: up to 3 prefixes and 3 suffixes.
- Unique: fixed mods, not normal-craftable.
PROGRESS OVERVIEW
Prefix and suffix at a glance
OVERVIEW
Item Level vs Required Level
Item Level and Required Level are easy to mix up but control completely different things. Item Level gates which modifiers can roll on the item and the maximum tier those modifiers can reach. Required Level gates when your character is allowed to equip the item.
Because of this, two items can have the same Required Level but very different Item Levels, and therefore very different modifier potential. The level of the area or monster that dropped the item determines its Item Level, not your character level.
- Item Level: controls the available modifier pool and max tier.
- Required Level: controls when you can equip the item.
- Area and monster level set the drop's Item Level.
- They are independent — raising one never raises the other.
OVERVIEW
Base type and the modifier pool
The base type of an item decides which modifiers can ever roll on it. A bow cannot roll armour modifiers, and a piece of armour cannot roll weapon-specific damage modifiers. Choosing the right base is the first step of any serious craft.
Base type also sets the implicit modifier and the item's base stats, both of which feed into how local modifiers are calculated. Always start a craft by confirming the base supports the mods you want before spending currency.
- Base type defines the entire available modifier pool.
- A weapon base and an armour base share almost no mods.
- The implicit is fixed by the base, not by rolling.
- Match the base to your build before crafting.
REFERENCE TABLE
Modifier tier matrix
How modifier families relate to tiers, what gates them, and what to watch for. Exact breakpoints are version-sensitive — phrase as 'per the referenced guide, pending PC verification' where precise numbers cannot be sourced.
| Modifier family | What the tier means | Gated by | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Offensive (damage, attributes) | Higher tiers give larger flat or percent bonuses | Item Level | Mostly prefixes, but not an absolute rule |
| Defensive (resistances, life) | Higher tiers give larger defensive values | Item Level | Mostly suffixes |
| Hybrid mods | Combine two stats in one tier band | Item Level | Occupy only one affix slot despite two stats |
| Local weapon/armour mods | Scale the item's own base stats | Base type + Item Level | Shown blue in the tooltip |
| Global mods | Apply to the whole character | Item Level | Conditional mods are always global |
T1 is the strongest tier of a given modifier; weights determine roll chance, not a guaranteed outcome. Do not invent exact tier breakpoints.
OVERVIEW
Local vs global, implicit vs explicit
Modifiers come in several flavours. Local modifiers affect the item itself — for example, local percent physical damage on a weapon scales that weapon's base physical damage. Global modifiers apply to your character as a whole. Local modifiers show in blue text in the tooltip.
Implicit modifiers are inherent to the base type. Explicit modifiers are rolled or crafted onto non-normal rarities. Enchantments come from a separate source such as Runes or Distilled Emotions, and socketable Runes add their own modifiers on top.
- Local: scales the item's own stats (blue text).
- Global: applies to the whole character.
- Implicit: fixed by base type.
- Explicit: rolled or crafted.
- Enchantment: from Runes, Distilled Emotions, or similar.
OVERVIEW
Reading the advanced modifier view
The advanced modifier view is where tiers become visible. On PC, hold Alt while hovering an item. On controller, toggle the advanced modifier display. This reveals each modifier's tier, whether it is local or global, and the affix group it belongs to.
Using this view lets you compare two items of the same base at a glance and decide which is worth currency. It also explains why a currency sometimes shows 'no available modifier' — the item's level or base pool simply has nothing valid left for that currency to add.
- PC: hold Alt to reveal tiers and details.
- Controller: use the advanced modifier toggle.
- Tiers, local/global tags, and affix groups become visible.
- 'No available modifier' means the pool has nothing valid to add.

RISK / REWARD
Keep, craft, sell, or discard?
A quick decision aid for what to do with an item you are unsure about.
| 选择 | 危险等级 | 风险 | 收益 | 何时选 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Keep crafting | yellow | Spending more currency may not improve the item | A well-rolled item can be a big upgrade or worth a lot | The base and item level support your target mods and you have currency to spare |
| Use as-is | green | Low — the item is already serviceable | Immediate character power without more investment | The rolls are good enough for your current content |
| Sell or trade | green | Low — you realise value now | Currency to fund a better craft later | The item has desirable high-tier mods others want |
| Discard or vendor | red | You may throw away a useful base or mod | Frees inventory and may return shards | The base is wrong, the iLvl is too low, or mods are unwanted |
REFERENCE TABLE
Worked examples
Three illustrative cases showing how base type, item level, and rarity shape the right decision. No prices are stated — value is qualitative.
| Case | Item | Item level context | Reasoning |
|---|---|---|---|
| Campaign Magic weapon | A blue one-hand weapon with one prefix | Low iLvl from early acts | Add a second affix with Augmentation for an immediate damage bump; do not over-invest currency at low level. |
| Early-map Rare armour | A gold chest with 2 prefixes and 1 suffix | Mid iLvl from early maps | Check whether missing resistances matter; fill slots with Exalted-style orbs only if the base iLvl supports useful tiers. |
| High-iLvl endgame base | A high-level base with no good mods yet | High iLvl from late content | Worth a proper craft because the iLvl unlocks top-tier mods; use deterministic currencies and Essences rather than raw gambling. |
These are teaching examples; exact affordable crafts depend on your league economy, which is not stated here.
CARD GRID
Common points of confusion
Paraphrased confusions players frequently raise about the modifier system.
Alt does not show tiers
Many players miss that the advanced modifier view (hold Alt on PC) is required to see tiers. Without it, items look identical in strength.
Item Level vs Required Level
A common mix-up: players raise their character level expecting stronger rolls, but only the item's own Item Level gates modifier tiers.
Why no modifier is available
When a currency reports no available modifier, the item's level or base pool has nothing valid left for that currency to add.
Same name, different value
The same named modifier can roll different values on different bases because the range depends on base type and Item Level.

Open source ↗COMMON MISTAKES
Common mistakes
The biggest crafting pitfalls come from misunderstanding the modifier system rather than from bad luck. Watching for these saves far more currency than any single orb.
- Crafting on a base whose Item Level is too low to reach the tiers you want.
- Confusing Item Level with Required Level and expecting higher character level to improve rolls.
- Assuming every prefix is offensive and every suffix is defensive — exceptions exist.
- Ignoring the base type and trying to roll mods the item's pool cannot contain.
- Forgetting to open the advanced modifier view before judging an item's strength.
- Spending rare currency on a full item that first needed an annul to free a slot.
PROBLEMS & ANSWERS
Frequently asked questions
Can a Magic item have more than one prefix?
No. A Magic item is limited to up to 1 prefix and 1 suffix. To hold more affixes you must upgrade it to Rare, which can reach 3 prefixes and 3 suffixes.
Does a higher Required Level mean stronger modifiers?
No. Required Level only controls when you can equip the item. The Item Level controls which modifiers and tiers can roll. An item can have a low Required Level but a high Item Level, or vice versa.
What does 'no available modifier' mean when I use currency?
It means the item's current level and base modifier pool has nothing valid left for that specific currency to add. Try a different currency, or free a slot with an Orb of Annulment first.
Why does the same modifier name show different values on two items?
The roll range of a modifier depends on the base type and the Item Level. The same named modifier can therefore roll different values on different bases.
Does a Divine Orb upgrade a modifier's tier?
No. A Divine Orb rerolls the numeric value within a modifier's existing tier. It never moves a T2 modifier up to T1; that requires a different base or currency.
Are all prefixes offensive and all suffixes defensive?
As a convention, prefixes lean offensive (damage, attributes) and suffixes lean defensive or utility (resistances, life, flasks). It is a useful rule of thumb, not an absolute law — exceptions occur, so always read the actual mod.
