QUICK ANSWER
Direct answers
What does an Omen do?
An Omen is a currency that changes how your NEXT crafting action behaves. Right-click it in your inventory to make it active, then use the matching orb - the Omen modifies that single action and is consumed.
How do I control prefixes vs suffixes?
Learn the naming scheme: Sinistral affects Prefixes and Dextral affects Suffixes. Pair it with a currency family (Exaltation for Exalted Orbs, Annulment for Orbs of Annulment, Erasure for Chaos Orbs, and so on) to force that currency onto one side only.
Why did my Omen not trigger?
Either you used a different currency than the Omen targets, or the item did not meet the precondition (for example a Regal Omen needs a magic item). Re-read the Omen tooltip before each use.
PREPARATION
Before you start
Omens are an advanced crafting tool, so you should already understand how modifiers, prefixes, and suffixes work on an item. If you are unsure, read the item-modifiers guide first - it explains how many prefixes and suffixes a base can hold and how to read an item tooltip.
You also need a source of Omens. They are primarily obtained from Ritual encounters (spent as Tribute) and from the Currency Exchange run by Alva in your hideout. Most crafting Omens are stackable, so you can carry several.
- Decide which side (prefix or suffix) you want to protect, add to, or remove before touching an Omen.
- Have the matching currency orb ready - an Omen does nothing until the correct orb is used.
- Only spend high-value omens (such as Erasure) on items worth more than the omen plus the currency.
REFERENCE TABLE
Omen name decoder
The naming scheme tells you what each Omen does. Two words combine: a side (Sinistral/Dextral) and a currency family.
| Name part | Targets | Common action | Check before use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sinistral | Prefixes | Limits the affected currency to prefix modifiers only | Confirm the item still has free prefix slots |
| Dextral | Suffixes | Limits the affected currency to suffix modifiers only | Confirm the item still has free suffix slots |
| of Exaltation | Exalted Orb | Adds modifiers (one side; Greater adds two) | Count how many open slots remain |
| of Annulment | Orb of Annulment | Removes modifiers (one side; Greater removes two) | Know which side you can afford to lose |
| of Erasure | Chaos Orb | Chaos-based removal limited to one side | Back up before a Chaos slam |
| of Alchemy | Orb of Alchemy | Rolls the maximum number of prefixes or suffixes | Use on a fresh rare base |
| of Coronation | Regal Orb | Adds one modifier, constrained to one side | Item must be magic rarity |
| of Crystallisation | Perfect / Corrupted Essence | Essence removal constrained to one side | Only relevant when using Essences |
| Homogenising | Exalt / Coronation | Adds a modifier of the same type as an existing one | Understand modifier tags first |
| Whittling | Chaos Orb | Removes the lowest-level modifier | Useful as a finisher |
| Greater | Exalt / Annulment | Doubles the effect (two mods added or removed) | Expensive - save for chase items |
This is an example subset; the full, current Omen list changes between patches. Always read the in-game Omen tooltip for the exact effect before using one. Names and stacking rules are flagged pending PC verification against the live 0.5.4 client.
OVERVIEW
Activation and consumption
To use an Omen, right-click it while it sits in your inventory. An active Omen is shown with a clear visual indicator in the UI - a red border surrounds the item - so you can confirm it is armed before you commit a currency.
An Omen is consumed the moment the modified action happens. If you use the matching currency, the Omen applies its effect to that single use and is spent. If you never use the matching currency, the Omen stays armed until you do (or until you log out, depending on the Omen).
- Right-click to activate, then verify the red border indicator is showing.
- Only the next matching currency use is affected; one Omen equals one modified action.
- If you use a different currency than the Omen targets, the Omen is not consumed and the action is normal.
REFERENCE TABLE
Omen and currency compatibility
Each crafting Omen only works with one specific currency and a matching item state. Check the precondition before you spend it.
| Omen | Modifies currency action | Prerequisite item state | Consumed when | High-risk point |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sinistral / Dextral Exaltation | Exalted Orb adds only prefix / only suffix | At least one open slot on that side | On the next Exalted Orb use | Wasted if both sides are already full |
| Sinistral / Dextral Annulment | Orb of Annulment removes only prefix / only suffix | A modifier exists on the targeted side | On the next Orb of Annulment use | Could remove your best modifier |
| Sinistral / Dextral Erasure | Chaos Orb removes only prefix / only suffix | A modifier exists on the targeted side | On the next Chaos Orb use | Chaos can also reroll - confirm intent |
| Sinistral / Dextral Alchemy | Orb of Alchemy rolls max prefixes / suffixes | Fresh rare base | On the next Orb of Alchemy use | None if used on a clean base |
| Sinistral / Dextral Coronation | Regal Orb adds only prefix / only suffix | Magic-rarity item | On the next Regal Orb use | Regal only works on magic items |
| Greater Exaltation | Exalted Orb adds two modifiers | Two open slots available | On the next Exalted Orb use | Cost versus a normal Exalt |
| Greater Annulment | Orb of Annulment removes two modifiers | Two mods you can spare | On the next Orb of Annulment use | Could remove two good mods |
| Whittling | Chaos Orb removes the lowest-level modifier | A clearly weakest mod exists | On the next Chaos Orb use | Lowest-level mod may still be useful |
| Homogenising Exaltation / Coronation | Adds a modifier sharing a tag with an existing one | Item already has a tagged modifier | On the next Exalted / Regal Orb use | Requires modifier tag knowledge |
Preconditions are described qualitatively; read the exact tooltip in-game for the live requirement. Confirmed naming and pairing from the referenced community crafting guide, pending PC verification.
REFERENCE TABS
Controlling one side
Three common goals when steering prefixes and suffixes. Switch tabs to see the right Omen for each.
When your item already has good mods on one side, you want to keep them safe. Use an Omen that limits the next currency to the OTHER side, so your protected mods cannot be touched.
- Want to keep your suffixes? Aim an Exalt/Annul at prefixes with a Sinistral Omen.
- This is the core of deterministic crafting: isolate the side you are willing to change.
REFERENCE TABS
Planning multiple active Omens
More than one Omen can be active at the same time. How they interact depends on the specific Omens - read each tooltip. These tabs cover the general principle.
Each Omen modifies a specific future currency action. If two active Omens both target the same currency, their effects combine for that single use. The exact combination is defined by the Omens themselves, so never assume a fixed order.
- Activate all the Omens you plan to use before using the currency.
- Read every tooltip - some Omens explicitly state how they combine.
- If unsure, test on a cheap item first.
PROGRESSION STEPS
Step-by-step craft
Lock your target
Decide which side (prefix or suffix) you want to keep, add to, or remove.
Identify the specific currency you will use (Exalted, Annulment, Chaos, Alchemy, or Regal).
Activate the Omen
Right-click the matching Omen in your inventory.
Confirm the red-border indicator shows it is active.
Use the currency
Apply the matching orb to the item.
The Omen modifies that single action and is consumed.
Verify the result
Check the item tooltip for the expected change (one side affected, the other untouched).
If the result is wrong, reassess before spending another Omen.
Repeat or stop
If the item still needs work and you have another Omen, repeat from step 1.
Stop once the item meets your goal to avoid wasting scarce Omens.
OVERVIEW
Expected before and after
Before using an Omen, your item has a fixed set of prefixes and suffixes, and a normal currency use would affect either side at random. After a correct Omen + currency combination, only the targeted side changes while the other side is preserved.
- Example: a rare with good suffixes but a bad prefix. A Sinistral Annulment + Orb of Annulment removes only the bad prefix, leaving the suffixes intact.
- Example: an empty prefix slot. A Sinistral Exaltation + Exalted Orb adds a prefix without touching suffixes.
- The exact modifier rolled is still random within its pool - the Omen controls the SIDE, not the specific value. See the essence-crafting guide for forcing specific modifier tiers.
RISK / REWARD
Risk and replacement cost
Weigh the cost of a failed craft against the price of the Omen and currency before you commit.
| 选择 | 危险等级 | 风险 | 收益 | 何时选 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Spend a high-value Erasure Omen on a near-perfect rare | red | If the Chaos reroll goes wrong you lose both the item and the Omen | Deterministic removal of exactly the unwanted side | Only on items worth more than the Omen plus the currency |
| Use a cheap Alchemy Omen on a fresh base | green | At worst you re-roll a disposable rare | Maximum prefixes or suffixes from a single Alchemy | Early crafting on bases you can replace |
| Hold the Omen for a better item | yellow | Opportunity cost; market price may shift | Avoids wasting it on a weak item | When no current craft actually needs its effect |
RISK / REWARD
Use, sell, or hold an Omen
Not every Omen should be used immediately. Decide based on the item in front of you and the trade value.
| 选择 | 危险等级 | 风险 | 收益 | 何时选 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Use the Omen now | green | Consumes a scarce, valuable currency | Progresses your current craft | When the item is worth more than the Omen |
| Sell the Omen | yellow | Lose future crafting control over that effect | Converts to trade currency you can spend elsewhere | When you do not need its effect soon |
| Hold the Omen | green | Price may move; delays a craft | Keeps options open for a chase item | When no current craft needs it |

CARD GRID
Community questions answered
Common player problems this guide addresses.
My Omen didn't trigger
You likely used a different currency than the Omen targets, or the item state did not meet the precondition. Re-read the Omen tooltip before each use.
Which Omen should I use first?
Pick the Omen that matches the currency you are about to use and the side you want to affect. Read both the Omen and the Orb tooltip.
Can I stack Omens?
Multiple Omens can be active at once; whether they combine depends on the specific Omens. Read each tooltip before combining.
Do Omens work in combat?
Most crafting Omens affect your next currency use; a few utility Omens trigger in combat. This guide covers crafting Omens only.

Open source ↗COMMON MISTAKES
Common mistakes
The most common Omen mistakes waste a valuable currency or damage a good item. Most come from not reading the tooltip before acting.
- Using the wrong currency - an Omen only reacts to its matching orb, so a mismatched slam does nothing and the Omen stays armed (or is wasted if you expected it).
- Forgetting the item precondition - a Regal Omen needs a magic item; an Alchemy Omen wants a fresh base.
- Activating an expensive Omen on a low-value item - the Omen is often worth more than the gear.
- Assuming a fixed stacking order - combination behavior is defined per Omen; verify in the tooltip.
- Not confirming the red-border indicator before committing the currency.
PROBLEMS & ANSWERS
Frequently asked questions
Are Omens consumed even if I don't use the currency?
No. An Omen stays active until the matching currency is used. It is only consumed when the modified action actually happens.
Can I use an Omen on a unique item?
Crafting Omens target the normal currency interactions on rare and magic items. Uniques generally cannot be re-crafted this way, so Omens are relevant to rare/magic bases.
What is the difference between Sinistral and Dextral?
Sinistral affects Prefixes and Dextral affects Suffixes. Combine with a currency family name (Exaltation, Annulment, Erasure, Alchemy, Coronation) to aim that currency at one side.
Where do I get Omens?
Primarily from Ritual encounters (spent as Tribute) and from the Currency Exchange run by Alva. Most crafting Omens are stackable.
Does an Omen guarantee the modifier value?
No. The Omen controls WHICH SIDE the currency affects, not the specific roll within that side's modifier pool. For guaranteed tiers, see the essence-crafting guide.
