QUICK ANSWER

Direct answers

What are Power, Frenzy, and Endurance charges in Path of Exile 2?

In PoE2 these three charge types are temporary, stackable resources. You generate them through specific skills, supports, passives, and items, then spend them to empower other abilities. They do NOT grant passive stat bonuses just by being held — this is the major change from Path of Exile 1.

Do charges automatically boost my damage, attack speed, or resistances?

No. In PoE2 a charge is only valuable when consumed by a skill or passive that explicitly interacts with it. Merely holding a charge provides no inherent stat. The value comes entirely from the consuming effect.

How many charges can I hold?

Each charge type has a default maximum (commonly 3 per type) that specific passives, keystones, and items can raise. Maximum, Duration, and how many generate per event are three separate numbers — do not conflate them.

Each charge type is a distinct resource with its own generation and consumption partners. Values and exact cooldowns are version-sensitive — confirm specifics in-game.

OVERVIEW

How charges are generated

Charge generation in PoE2 comes from three broad buckets: active skills, support gems, and passives or items. A skill like Killing Palm grants a Power Charge whenever it scores a kill. The Combat Frenzy setup grants a Frenzy Charge each time you apply a Freeze, Electrocute, or Pin effect, gated by a short cooldown so you cannot trigger it every frame. Warrior tools such as Magma Barrier grant an Endurance Charge when you block during the buff.

Some passives and keystones add or convert generation. The Resonance keystone, for example, redirects which charge type you gain, letting a build that would generate one type instead gain another. Items with implicit or crafted modifiers, such as Frenzy Charge on Kill, provide generation that scales with how many enemies you defeat.

  • Active skills: Killing Palm (Power), Magma Barrier (Endurance), Cull the Weak (Frenzy).
  • Support gems: Combat Frenzy (Frenzy on Freeze, Electrocute, or Pin), Retort (Frenzy when consuming a Parried debuff), Break Endurance (Endurance chance on fully breaking armour).
  • Marks: Sniper's Mark grants a Frenzy Charge when you critically hit a marked enemy.
  • Passives and keystones: Grit, Cranial Impact, and Resonance alter maximum and conversion.
  • Items: implicit or crafted modifiers such as Frenzy Charge on Kill.

OVERVIEW

Duration, maximum, and generation amount are separate

Three numbers govern a charge system, and players often blur them. Maximum Charges is the cap you can hold at once. Charge Duration is how long a held charge persists before it expires. Generation amount is how many charges a single event grants. Raising one does not raise the others.

For example, a passive may raise your Maximum Endurance Charges while a separate modifier extends Duration, and a generation skill may grant only one charge per trigger regardless of your maximum. Treat them as independent dials when planning a build.

  • Maximum Charges: the per-type cap; raised by passives, keystones, and some belt or ring enchants.
  • Duration: how long a charge survives untended; extended by specific nodes and items.
  • Generation amount: charges granted per event; often a fixed 1 per qualifying trigger.
  • Do not assume a higher maximum means faster or automatic generation.

OVERVIEW

What consuming a charge grants

The payoff of charges is consumption. In PoE2 you spend charges through skills, supports, or passives that explicitly state they interact with a charge type. The consumed charge empowers the effect rather than passively buffing you.

Examples: Falling Thunder consumes Power Charges to add lightning projectiles and increase damage; Barrage consumes Frenzy Charges to add repetitions to the next bow attack; Infernal Cry consumes all Endurance Charges to empower subsequent attacks and make enemies combust on death. The Amazon's Infuse Weapon triggers elemental infusions when you consume Power, Endurance, or Frenzy Charges. The persistent Charge Infusion skill grants buffs based on your active charges and consumes charges on a timer.

  • Power spenders: Falling Thunder, Charge Infusion (crit bonus on consume).
  • Frenzy spenders: Barrage, Amazon Infuse Weapon (Lightning Infusion), Tumult.
  • Endurance spenders: Infernal Cry, Seismic Cry, Shielding Cry, Rally, Amazon Infuse Weapon (Fire Infusion).
  • A charge is worthless unless something in your build consumes it.

OVERVIEW

Charge type conversion and replacement

PoE2 has a real charge-conversion mechanic: the Resonance keystone. When allocated, it changes which charge type you gain from generation sources — you gain Power Charges instead of Frenzy, Frenzy instead of Endurance, and Endurance instead of Power. This lets a build funnel generation into the single charge type its consumers want.

Outside keystones, individual skills and supports define exactly which charge they grant or consume; there is no automatic universal conversion between charge types. If a skill says it grants or consumes a specific charge, it only ever interacts with that type.

  • Resonance keystone: redirects generated charge type (Power, Frenzy, Endurance cycling).
  • Skills and supports are type-specific: a Frenzy consumer never spends Power or Endurance.
  • No global 'any charge' pool exists; the three types remain distinct resources.

REFERENCE TABLE

Mapping versus bossing

Charge uptime differs sharply by environment. Do not project mapping uptime onto boss fights.

EnvironmentGeneration easeConsumption valueNotes
Mapping and clearingHigh — many kills and frequent status effects (Freeze, Electrocute, Pin) keep charges flowingSustained — spend charges continuously for clear speed and area payoffOn-kill sources such as Frenzy on Kill shine here; uptime is easy to maintain
Bossing and few targetsLower — fewer kills, and bosses often resist Freeze, Electrocute, and Pin or cannot be reliably staggered into a guard or stunBurst — each consumed charge is high value for single-target damage or defensePlan generation around the boss's resistances; do not assume mapping uptime carries over

Boss uptime must be measured against the boss itself, never inferred from mapping performance.

Worked examples

Three build archetypes and how each turns generation into consumption. Mechanics only — no fabricated numbers, levels, or prices.

CaseClass or skill typeHow charges are used
Monk or Invoker-style (Power Charges)Intelligence caster-attack with a quarterstaffGenerate Power Charges with Killing Palm on kills; consume them via Falling Thunder for extra lightning projectiles and damage, or via Charge Infusion for a crit bonus.
Ranger or Amazon-style (Frenzy Charges)Dexterity attack with a bow or spearGenerate Frenzy Charges with Combat Frenzy on Freeze, Electrocute, or Pin, or with Sniper's Mark crits; consume via Barrage for extra repetitions or Amazon Infuse Weapon for Lightning Infusion.
Warrior-style (Endurance Charges)Strength warcry or meleeGenerate Endurance Charges via Magma Barrier blocks or Cranial Impact Heavy Stuns; consume via Infernal Cry to empower attacks and combust enemies, or Rally to recover life.

These are teaching examples of the generation-to-consumption loop, not specific gear or level recommendations.

COMMON MISTAKES

Common mistakes

Most charge problems come from carrying the PoE1 mental model into PoE2. Watch for these pitfalls before blaming the mechanic.

  • Assuming charges auto-grant crit, attack speed, or damage reduction just by being held — in PoE2 they do not.
  • Building generation but no consumer, so charges expire unused.
  • Conflating Maximum, Duration, and generation amount, then wondering why more maximum did not mean more uptime.
  • Relying on mapping uptime (many kills, easy status effects) and expecting the same on a boss that resists those triggers.
  • Forgetting charges expire: a generated charge decays if you do not spend it before Duration ends.
  • Feeding a consumer of one charge type with a different type because you skipped the Resonance conversion.

CARD GRID

Common points of confusion

Confusions players frequently carry over from Path of Exile 1.

poe1-habit

Charges should boost me passively

Many players expect held charges to raise crit or attack speed like PoE1. In PoE2 they are spent resources — only a consuming skill gives value.

confusion

More maximum means more power

Players raise Maximum Charges and expect automatic strength. Maximum, Duration, and per-event generation are separate; a higher cap alone changes nothing.

uptime

Boss uptime equals mapping uptime

Because mapping floods charges from kills and status effects, players assume bosses do too. Bosses resist those triggers, so plan separate generation.

type

Any charge works for any skill

Players try to feed a Frenzy consumer with Power Charges. The three types are distinct; only Resonance or a type-specific source changes what you gain.

PROBLEMS & ANSWERS

Frequently asked questions

Do Power, Frenzy, and Endurance charges give passive bonuses in PoE2?

No. Unlike PoE1, held charges grant no inherent stats. Their value comes only from skills, supports, and passives that consume them. A charge is a resource, not a standing buff.

What is the default maximum number of charges?

Each type commonly has a default maximum of 3, raised by specific passives, keystones such as Grit, and items. Maximum, Duration, and per-event generation are independent numbers, so raising one does not raise the others.

How do I generate Frenzy Charges?

Common routes are Combat Frenzy (on Freeze, Electrocute, or Pin, with a short cooldown), Cull the Weak, Parry plus Disengage, Sniper's Mark (crit on a marked enemy), Retort, and Frenzy-on-Kill modifiers. Exact cooldowns and values are version-sensitive, so confirm them in-game.

What consumes Endurance Charges?

Warrior warcries such as Infernal Cry (consumes all to empower attacks and combust enemies), Seismic Cry, and Shielding Cry, the Rally support, and Amazon Infuse Weapon (Fire Infusion). The persistent Charge Infusion skill also consumes them on a timer.

What is the Resonance keystone?

A passive that redirects which charge type you gain: Power instead of Frenzy, Frenzy instead of Endurance, Endurance instead of Power. It lets a build funnel generation into the single charge type its consumers want.

Why do my charges keep disappearing?

Charges have a Duration and expire if not consumed in time. If you generate faster than you spend, or your consumer is on cooldown, they decay. Ensure a consumer of the same type exists and watch Duration so charges are spent before they lapse.
