QUICK ANSWER

Quick answer

How do I refund normal passives?

Open the passive screen and unallocate points for gold; the cost scales with how many points you refund and your character level.

You do not need an NPC or a Trial for ordinary passive refunds.

How do I reset my Ascendancy?

Clearing the relevant Trial or Altar resets your allocated Ascendancy points so you can re-pick the class and nodes.

This is higher risk: you lose all current Ascendancy points until you re-earn them by completing the Trial again.

Why are Weapon Set refunds paired?

Weapon Sets allocate passives per set, and when both sets are linked the refund must be handled as a pair.

Refund the linked sets together, or you may strand points you intended to keep.

What you can refund, where, what it costs, and whether a Trial is required. Verify NPC names and Trial requirements against the current client before acting.

OVERVIEW

Before you change anything

Respecs are cheap to start and expensive to finish. Confirm what you actually need to change before spending gold or a Trial.

  • Open a build planner and map the target tree so you only move the points you must.
  • Check gold on hand; large refunds can cost far more than a few points.
  • For Ascendancy changes, confirm which Trial or Altar is current for that class before committing.
  • Save or screenshot your current setup so you can revert if the new plan feels worse.

OVERVIEW

Normal passive refunds

Ordinary passive points are the most flexible. You refund them directly in the passive screen for gold, with no NPC errand and no Trial.

  • Cost scales with the number of points refunded and your character level, so prune in batches you actually need.
  • You can refund a single point or the whole tree; the price difference is purely the count.
  • Refunded points return to the pool immediately and can be reallocated the same session.
  • If a node is required by a cluster you want to keep, refund from the outer edge inward to avoid stranding pathing.

OVERVIEW

Weapon Set passive refunds

Weapon Sets let you allocate passives per set. When both sets are linked, the refund must respect that pairing or you can strand points.

  • Refund the linked sets together rather than one side at a time.
  • If a set shares pathing with the other, removing it may also affect the paired set's reach.
  • Re-plan both sets on a planner before refunding so the paired layout stays valid.
  • Treat Weapon Set refunds as a paired operation, not two independent ones.

OVERVIEW

Ascendancy reset

Changing your Ascendancy class or reworking its nodes is the highest-risk respec. Clearing the relevant Trial or Altar resets allocated Ascendancy points so you can re-pick.

  • You lose all current Ascendancy points until you re-earn them by completing the Trial or reaching the Altar again.
  • Confirm the current Trial or Altar requirement for your class, because requirements shift between patches.
  • Plan the new Ascendancy path before resetting so you do not sit on zero points.
  • A full Ascendancy change is worth it only when the new class clearly beats your current one for the content you run.

COST BREAKDOWN

Cost breakdown

Respec cost is mostly gold for passives and time/Trial for Ascendancy. Scale expectations before you commit.

项目成本说明货币
Refund a few passive pointsLow goldA small number of points costs little; good for minor fixes.gold
Refund many points or full treeHigh goldCost rises with points refunded and character level; batch only what you need.gold
Weapon Set paired refundGold per setPaired sets may require refunding both, doubling the touched-point count.gold
Ascendancy resetTrial + timeNo direct gold, but you must re-clear the Trial or Altar and re-earn every point.-

Gold cost for passives scales with count and level; Ascendancy cost is the Trial run itself. Verify exact scaling in the current client.

OVERVIEW

Small change vs full rebuild

Match the method to the size of the change. Most 'respecs' are tiny and should never touch Ascendancy.

  • Small tweak (a few nodes): refund those points only; do not open the Ascendancy screen.
  • Phase transition (new gear tier): refund the affected pathing and re-path; still gold only.
  • Full rebuild (different archetype): consider Weapon Set respec and possibly Ascendancy reset together.
  • Only reset Ascendancy when the new class clearly outperforms for your content; otherwise a passive reshuffle suffices.

CHECKLIST

Before you respec

  1. Save current config

Screenshot or export your passive, Weapon Set, and Ascendancy setup.

Keep the old plan in case the new one feels worse.

  2. Plan the target

Use a build planner to map the exact target tree and Ascendancy.

Confirm which points actually move so you refund the minimum.

  3. Check gold and Trial

Confirm gold on hand covers the passive refund count.

For Ascendancy, confirm the current Trial or Altar requirement before committing.

  4. Handle paired sets

If Weapon Sets are linked, plan both sets together.

Refund the pair as one operation to avoid stranding points.

Community questions

Common respec questions from Reddit and video comments, with our read and a direct suggestion.

Gold

Refund cost exploded

Problem: refunding the whole tree cost far more than expected.

Evidence: gold cost scales with points refunded and character level.

Suggestion: refund only the points you must; batch minimally.

Ascendancy

Ascendancy reset lost everything

Problem: resetting cleared all Ascendancy points at once.

Evidence: a reset returns all points until you re-earn them via the Trial.

Suggestion: plan the new path first; only reset when the new class clearly wins.

Weapon Set

Weapon Set stranded points

Problem: refunding one set broke the other's pathing.

Evidence: linked sets must be refunded as a pair.

Suggestion: plan and refund both sets together.

Trial

Trial requirement changed

Problem: the old Trial path no longer works for the class.

Evidence: Trial/Altar requirements shift between patches.

Suggestion: confirm the current requirement in the client before resetting.

PoE 2 How to Respec Passives and Ascendancy

A walkthrough of refunding normal and Weapon Set passives for gold, and resetting Ascendancy at the correct Trial or Altar.

What to watch for: Refund passives in batches, handle Weapon Sets as pairs, and only reset Ascendancy when the new class clearly beats your current one.

OVERVIEW

Troubleshooting

Most respec confusion is about cost scaling or paired sets, not a bug. Read the symptom, then check the matrix.

  • Cost too high: refund only the points you must; gold scales with count and level.
  • Weapon Set broke: you refunded one side of a linked pair; re-plan and refund both.
  • Ascendancy empty: a reset returns all points until re-earned via the Trial.
  • Trial missing: confirm the current Trial or Altar requirement, which shifts between patches.
  • Suspected bug: capture your allocated points, gold, and the Trial state before reporting.
