Quick summary
0.3.1 delivered a high-impact rework of the Endgame Tablet system. Before 0.3.1, Tablets were placed into Towers; after 0.3.1, they are used directly in the Map Device, have a fixed number of uses, and a single Map can carry up to three Tablets with the slot count tied to the Map's Mod count.
Towers did not disappear: they still provide Atlas vision and reward duties, but the 'put the Tablet in the Tower' workflow that old guides describe is gone.
- Tablets no longer placed in Towers.
- Used directly in the Map Device.
- Fixed number of uses per Tablet.
- One Map up to three Tablets; slots scale with Map Mod count.
- Towers keep Atlas vision and rewards.
- 0.3.1 also shipped boss, performance, item UI and bug fixes.
Old flow (pre-0.3.1)
New flow: Map Device
Tablet in Map Device
Tablets are now applied to a chosen Map via the Map Device rather than a Tower.
Fixed use count
Each Tablet has a fixed number of uses instead of an infinite Tower radius.
Up to three Tablets per Map
A single Map can use up to three Tablets; the available slot count depends on the Map's Mod count.
Tower role retained
Towers continue to provide Atlas vision and reward duties; they are no longer the Tablet container.
Tablet slots & uses
Slot count
Mod-dependentA Map's Tablet slot count is determined by its number of Mods; more Mods can mean more slots, up to three.
Use count
FixedEach Tablet is consumed over a fixed number of map uses; plan batches accordingly.
Tower
Vision + rewardsTowers still grant Atlas vision and reward coverage; pair them with Map-Device Tablets.
What Towers still do
Tablet container
Pre-0.3.1: Towers held Tablets and applied effects in radius.
0.3.1+: Towers no longer hold Tablets; Tablets go in the Map Device.
Atlas vision
Pre-0.3.1: Towers provided vision (unchanged role).
0.3.1+: Towers still provide Atlas vision.
Rewards
Pre-0.3.1: Towers contributed rewards.
0.3.1+: Towers still contribute reward duties.

Community evidence
Just drop the Tablet in the Tower and run maps in radius.
My six-Mod map took three Tablets, a two-Mod map only one.

Open source ↗FAQ
Do I still put Tablets in Towers?
No. Since 0.3.1, Tablets are used directly in the Map Device, not placed in Towers. Towers now only provide Atlas vision and rewards.
How many Tablets can one Map take?
Up to three, and the number of available slots depends on the Map's Mod count.
Do Tablets last forever now?
No. Each Tablet has a fixed number of uses; it is consumed over those uses rather than applying infinitely via a Tower radius.
