Overview: Bounce Again After the Hit

Chain Support is a Support gem: socket it into a projectile (or some bouncable) skill, and after that skill hits the primary target, it keeps bouncing the projectile to nearby other enemies several times, forming a chain. It doesn't increase single-hit damage; it extends 'one hit' into 'a string of hits' — boosting coverage and clear.

Its value is in dense scenes: when a pack is bunched up, Chain makes one arrow / bolt ricochet between them, covering far beyond the single landing point. The cost is that each bounce usually hits a target only once, and the bounce distance is limited — too spread or too far and it won't bounce.

This fits Lightning Arrow / frost projectile builds naturally: Lightning Arrow already补 damage via post-hit lightning chains; stacking Chain makes the arrow itself bounce too, forming 'arrow bounce + chain bounce' double coverage; Ice Shot-style clear builds also string mobs together via Chain.

Mechanics: How Bounces Jump, Do They Repeat?

Bounce logic: after the supported projectile hits the primary target, it looks near that target for the next enemy not yet hit by this bounce chain, jumps and hits again, repeating until bounces run out or no target found. Each jump re-selects a 'not-yet-hit' target, so normally the same mob isn't bounced twice.

Range limit: the max distance per jump is fixed. If there's no new target within range nearby, the chain breaks early. This is why in sparse or scattered packs Chain looks like 'it only bounced once' or didn't bounce at all — not that it isn't socketed, but there's no target to jump to.

And hit rate: Chain doesn't change the first hit; it only extends after a hit. If the primary misses, there's no subsequent bounce. So the projectile's base hit rate remains the prerequisite.

Lightning Arrow double coverage: Lightning Arrow already has post-hit lightning chains; stacking Chain makes the arrow itself bounce too, forming 'arrow bounce + chain bounce' double chaining — extremely high clear efficiency in dense packs.

Ice Shot clear build: the frost bow uses Ice Shot to spread chill and shatter; Chain strings arrows through the pack to pre-spread chill faster, pairing with Herald of Ice's shatter explosion for a smoother clear chain.

Relation to single-target bosses: a boss is single-target with no extra target to bounce to, so Chain's payoff drops to zero. In those scenes Chain should be removed or swapped for a damage support — the most common newbie misjudgment: assuming Chain helps on bosses too.
