Overview: One Mark, a Whole Freeze
Freezing Mark is a Mark skill: you apply a freeze mark to a single enemy. The marked enemy takes increased Freeze Buildup, so it freezes more easily; crucially, when that marked enemy is killed or critically hit, the mark automatically spreads to a nearby enemy — creating a 'kill one, freeze a pack' snowball.
Its role is not direct damage but an 'amplifier + crowd control' tool: a low-cost mark converts into multiplied freeze efficiency and group freezing. For builds that rely on freeze-trigger, shatter or freeze-control, it is the bridge that turns single-target control into area control.
This is why it fits naturally with Ice Shot / Herald of Ice frost systems: frost bow builds already spread chill and shatter, and Freezing Mark makes key targets (and the trash around them) freeze faster, so shatter and freeze-trigger payoffs are maxed.
- Essence: single-target mark, raises target Freeze Buildup, spreads on kill / crit.
- Role: amplifier + CC, deals no direct damage.
- Mechanic: kill one → spread → freeze a pack, snowball.
- Natural partners: Ice Shot / Herald of Ice frost systems.
Key Stats and Acquisition
- Category
- Active Mark (Mark · Cold · Ailment)
- Tagged mark, cold, ailment, curse, single-target, spread.
- Weapon requirement
- None (spell / mark)
- Usually a weapon-agnostic mark skill, slots into any skill gem socket.
- Acquisition
- Uncut Skill Gem
- Unlocked via an Uncut Skill Gem from campaign or drops.
- Freeze Buildup bonus
- Marked target takes higher Freeze Buildup
- Directly lowers the freeze threshold, letting the target freeze sooner.
- Spread trigger
- Spreads to nearby on kill / crit
- The core of the snowball; the spread target must be near the marked one.
- Quality
- Improves buildup bonus / spread range
- Higher quality usually amplifies the freeze-buildup bonus or spread radius.
Mechanics: How the Mark Applies and Spreads
Application: you use Freezing Mark on an enemy and it carries the freeze mark. The mark itself deals no damage, but the target's received Freeze Buildup is raised — enemies that barely crossed the freeze threshold before now freeze more easily.
Spread condition: when the marked enemy is killed, or takes a critical hit, the mark jumps to a nearby enemy. This means 'pop the marked one → it spreads to the neighbor → that neighbor also becomes a high-buildup target → kill it to keep spreading' chains. Crit-triggered spread lets you sustain the snowball without needing kills, which is especially useful in high-HP boss phases.
Single-mark limit: usually you can have only one enemy as the 'primary mark' enjoying maximum bonus at a time (similar to the single-entry rule of curses). But spread secondary targets also inherit the freeze-buildup bonus, so the real payoff covers an area. Don't assume you can stack multiple independent marks.
- Mark raises the target's Freeze Buildup, freezing it sooner.
- Kill or crit triggers spread, jumping to a nearby enemy.
- Crit spread sustains the snowball without kills (useful on bosses).
- Usually one primary mark at a time; spread targets inherit the bonus.
Comparison: Freezing Mark vs Other Marks
| Mark | Core bonus | Spread / trigger | Typical role |
|---|---|---|---|
| Freezing Mark | Target takes higher Freeze Buildup | Spreads to nearby on kill / crit | Frost CC, pairs with shatter / freeze-trigger |
| Sniper's Mark | Target takes higher hit / crit-related bonus | Usually single-target buff | Ranged ST burst, common on Deadeye |
| Overwhelming Mark | Target takes increased damage (more dmg) | Single-target buff | Generic damage mark, common in bossing |
| Other elemental marks | Corresponding elemental buildup / ailment bonus | Per elemental mechanics | Dedicated to that element's system |
Recommended Support Gems
- Critical Damage / Crit supports
- Core
- Crit is one of the spread triggers, so stacking crit equals more frequent snowball sustain.
- Naturally stacks with the frost bow's crit system.
- Cold Infusion / Added Cold
- Core
- Boosts cold damage so the marked freeze buildup fills faster.
- Generic core for cold builds.
- Mark Duration / Duration (if available)
- Situational
- If the client offers a duration support for marks, it reduces how often you re-apply.
- Confirm current client maps it onto Mark.
- Increased AoE / Area (affects spread)
- Situational
- If spread range scales with area modifiers, area supports widen the snowball coverage.
- Clear value in dense packs is obvious.
- Magnified Area
- Optional
- Enlarges mark-related radii, pairs with AoE cold skills.
- Limited help on a pinned boss.
- Spell Echo (if instant mark)
- Optional
- If the mark is an instant spell, Spell Echo speeds re-application rhythm.
- Note Spell Echo doesn't affect triggers, only manual casts.
Role in Builds
CC core of Ice Shot Deadeye: the frost bow uses Ice Shot to spread chill and shatter, while Freezing Mark makes key targets and surrounding trash freeze faster, amplifying shatter and freeze-trigger payoffs. With Herald of Ice's shatter burst it closes the loop 'mark → freeze → shatter clear'.
Crit spread in boss phases: a high-HP boss can't be 'killed to spread', but crit spread keeps throwing the mark onto trash that spawns near the boss or relevant targets, sustaining CC.
Relation to freeze-trigger / shatter builds: any build relying on Freeze to trigger (e.g. Cast on Elemental Ailment's freeze route) or on shatter to clear directly benefits from Freezing Mark's faster freezing.
- Ice Shot Deadeye: mark → freeze → shatter-clear loop.
- Boss phases: sustain CC via crit spread, no kill needed.
- Serves freeze-trigger / shatter builds; faster freeze = direct gain.
Common Mistakes: No Spread / No Freeze
Mark won't spread: you applied it but neither killed nor crit the target, so spread never triggers. Direct answer: land a crit on the marked target, or kill it first, and the mark jumps to a neighbor.
Won't freeze: the mark only raises Freeze Buildup, not a guaranteed freeze — if your cold damage is too low, or the target is freeze-immune, the mark can't save it. Direct answer: confirm your cold damage fills the freeze threshold and the target isn't freeze-immune.
Assuming multiple independent marks: usually only one primary mark at a time. Direct answer: reserve the mark for the current key target and rely on spread for the rest, instead of trying to mark every mob.
Mark breaks your rotation: Freezing Mark is an extra action; spamming it disrupts your main attack rhythm. Direct answer: fold the mark into your rotation (mark elites, then focus-fire) rather than mindless clicking.
- Issue: mark won't spread.
- Direct answer: crit or kill the marked target to trigger spread.
- Issue: marked but still won't freeze.
- Direct answer: mark only adds buildup; low cold / immunity still no freeze.
- Issue: trying to mark every mob.
- Direct answer: one primary mark, spread covers the rest.

Open source ↗Frequently Asked Questions
Does Freezing Mark deal damage directly?
No. It is a mark / CC tool and deals no direct damage.
Its value is raising the target's Freeze Buildup and spreading on kill / crit.
What exactly triggers the spread?
When the marked enemy is killed, or takes a critical hit, the mark jumps to a nearby enemy.
Crit-triggered spread sustains the snowball without kills, very useful in boss phases.
Why won't it freeze even after marking?
The mark only raises Freeze Buildup, not a guaranteed freeze; low cold damage or freeze immunity still no freeze.
Direct answer: confirm cold damage fills the threshold and the target isn't immune.
