Overview: Aura Buff + Shatter Chain
Herald of Ice is a Herald (aura) skill: once active it grants you a layer of extra cold damage (your attacks and spells carry more cold), and crucially — when a frozen enemy dies (shatters), it triggers an icy explosion dealing cold damage to nearby enemies. It is a dual tool of 'buff + on-kill chain'.
Its clear logic is elegant: you freeze mobs with cold skills, frozen mobs shatter on death, and the shatter triggers an ice explosion that freezes / damages the surrounding pack — forming a 'freeze → die → shatter → explode → re-freeze' snowball. This is exactly why it is the clear core of frost bow builds.
The cost is Spirit: Herald skills reserve Spirit (competing with Persistent Buffs / other Heralds / trigger gems for budget). In Spirit-tight builds, whether to run Herald of Ice is often a trade-off between 'clear efficiency' and 'other core auras'.
- Essence: aura bonus (extra cold) + shatter explosion (on-kill chain).
- Clear logic: freeze → die → shatter → explode → re-freeze, snowball.
- Cost: reserves Spirit, competes with other Heralds / trigger gems.
- Common partners: Ice Shot / Freezing Mark frost systems.
Key Stats and Acquisition
- Category
- Herald (Aura · Cold · Shatter)
- Tagged herald, aura, cold, shatter, aoe, spirit.
- Weapon requirement
- None (aura)
- As an aura skill it is usually weapon-agnostic, slots into any gem socket.
- Acquisition
- Uncut Herald Gem
- Unlocked via an Uncut Herald Gem from campaign or drops.
- Spirit reservation
- High (reserve budget)
- Competes with other Persistent Buffs / Heralds / trigger gems for Spirit.
- Shatter trigger
- On frozen enemy death
- Only 'frozen' enemy death triggers; normal death does not.
- Quality
- Improves cold bonus / explosion area
- Higher quality usually amplifies cold bonus or shatter explosion area / damage.
Mechanics: How the Shatter Explosion Triggers
Trigger condition: the shatter explosion only happens on 'frozen enemy death'. That is, you must freeze the target first, then kill it, for the shatter to trigger the ice explosion. If you kill without freezing, a normal death does NOT trigger Herald of Ice's explosion — the most common newbie miss.
Explosion effect: the shatter-triggered ice explosion deals cold damage to nearby enemies, and the explosion itself can also freeze / advance freeze buildup on surrounding enemies, so neighbors get frozen easier after the blast, freeze then die then explode — a chain. In dense packs this can clear the screen in one go.
Bonus part: Herald of Ice also adds cold damage to your attacks / spells, so even without relying on shatter, keeping it on steadily boosts your cold output. It is a combo of 'passive cold damage + active shatter chain'.
- Shatter explosion only on 'frozen enemy death'; normal death no trigger.
- Explosion deals cold to nearby and can freeze / advance them, chaining.
- Always-on also adds cold; passive cold + active shatter combo.
Comparison: Herald of Ice vs Other Heralds
| Herald | Added damage | Kill / trigger effect | Typical role |
|---|---|---|---|
| Herald of Ice | Cold damage | Frozen enemy death → ice explosion | Frost clear core, shatter chain |
| Herald of Thunder | Lightning damage | Shocked enemy death → bolt strike | Lightning clear, shock chain |
| Herald of Ash | Fire damage | Ignited enemy death → fire burst | Fire system, ignite chain |
| Other Heralds | Corresponding element damage | Per element trigger | Dedicated to that element's system |
Recommended Support Gems
- Cold Infusion / Added Cold
- Core
- Amplifies the cold bonus Herald provides and the shatter explosion's cold damage.
- Core for cold builds.
- Magnified Area
- Core
- Enlarges shatter explosion radius so the chain covers more enemies — a clear-quality change.
- Many frost builds treat it as mandatory for the Herald.
- Increased Duration (if on aura)
- Situational
- If the client allows extending aura / effect duration, it cuts re-cast frequency.
- Confirm current client maps it onto Herald.
- Spell Cascade
- Optional
- If the shatter explosion counts as a spell effect, Cascade can widen its reach.
- Exact benefit per client.
- Energy Retention / Spirit (if available)
- Optional
- If the client offers a Spirit-cost-reducing support, it eases the budget pressure.
- Spirit-tight builds pay special attention.
- Elemental Focus
- Optional
- Amplifies cold damage but drops elemental ailment status; confirm you don't care about non-freeze ailments.
- If the shatter chain relies on freeze status, use Elemental Focus cautiously.
Role in Builds
Clear engine of Ice Shot Deadeye: the frost bow uses Ice Shot to spread chill and freeze; Herald of Ice turns 'frozen mob dies → explode' into the norm, and with Freezing Mark freezing key targets faster — closing the loop 'mark → freeze → die → shatter → explode' clear.
Relation to freeze-trigger / shatter builds: any build relying on Freeze to trigger or on shatter to clear directly benefits from Herald of Ice's steady shatter explosions. It is the lever that scales 'single-target freeze' into 'area ice burst'.
Spirit budget trade-off: in Spirit-tight builds, running Herald of Ice may squeeze out other core auras or trigger gems. Then you must weigh whether 'shatter clear payoff' exceeds the squeezed-out aura value; if needed, use Spirit-reducing supports or swap gear.
- Ice Shot Deadeye: Herald as shatter clear engine, loop clear.
- Serves freeze-trigger / shatter builds, scaling area ice burst.
- Spirit-tight: weigh shatter payoff vs squeezed-out auras.
Common Mistakes: No Shatter / Spirit Over Budget
Shatter won't trigger: you killed a non-frozen mob (normal death), so no explosion. Direct answer: freeze first then kill; use Ice Shot / Freezing Mark to ensure the target is frozen before the finishing blow.
Explosion no coverage: shatter explosion has a radius; too-spread mobs don't fill it. Direct answer: use Magnified Area to enlarge radius, or gather mobs before clearing.
Spirit over budget: you run Herald of Ice plus another Herald / trigger gem and Spirit blows out, disabling skills. Direct answer: reallocate Spirit, keep core auras first, or use Spirit-reducing supports.
Expecting it to freeze bosses: bosses usually aren't cleared by the shatter mechanic; shatter explosion has limited value on a solo boss. Direct answer: Herald of Ice shines in clear, don't rely on it for boss single-target.
- Issue: shatter won't trigger.
- Direct answer: freeze then kill; normal death no trigger.
- Issue: explosion no coverage.
- Direct answer: enlarge area or gather mobs before clear.
- Issue: Spirit over budget.
- Direct answer: reallocate Spirit, keep core auras first.

Open source ↗Frequently Asked Questions
Why don't kills produce an ice explosion?
The shatter explosion only triggers on 'frozen enemy death'; normal death does not trigger.
Direct answer: freeze first then kill; use Ice Shot / Freezing Mark to ensure freeze.
Does Herald of Ice reserve a lot of Spirit?
High. It competes with other Heralds / Persistent Buffs / trigger gems for Spirit budget.
When Spirit is tight, weigh it or use Spirit-reducing supports.
Is it useful on bosses?
Limited. Bosses usually aren't cleared by the shatter mechanic; shatter explosion has low value on a solo boss.
Herald of Ice's real strength is dense-pack clearing.
