Ice Shot Skill Guide — 80% Phys-to-Cold, Arrow vs Shards, Freeze and Burst

Ice Shot is a bow attack that converts 80% of physical damage to cold and bursts into a fan of ice shards at the arrow's end. This guide covers what 80% conversion means for weapon choice, the Arrow vs Shards relationship, why clear is strong but boss freeze fails, Freezing Mark and Snipe synergy, and Non-Crit vs Crit support tradeoffs.

Overview: What Ice Shot Does

Ice Shot is a bow attack: you fire an arrow that, on hitting an enemy or reaching maximum range, bursts into a fan of ice-shard projectiles dealing cold damage around the impact. The most misunderstood part is treating 'the first arrow' and 'the bursting shards' as the same thing — they are two independent damage segments.

It converts 80% of physical damage to cold, so its core value comes from cold damage, chill and freeze, not physical hit damage. That also decides weapon choice: you want a bow with high cold damage, attack speed or crit, not pure physical big hits.

Because clear comes from shard coverage and single-target from concentrated shards plus freeze, Ice Shot is a mainstay on Deadeye bow builds and a viable transform core for other bow builds. The common complaints — 'it fires but the boss won't freeze', 'clear is fast but single-target is slow', 'mana mysteriously runs out' — are answered directly below.

  • Essence: bow attack + arrow (carrier) + bursting ice shards (second-segment AoE).
  • 80% phys-to-cold: value comes from cold damage, chill, freeze — not physical.
  • Clear from shard coverage; single-target from concentration + freeze / Snipe.
  • Common carrier: Deadeye bow; also a transform core for other bow builds.

Core Mechanics: Conversion, Arrow vs Shards, Freeze

80% Physical to Cold: at cast most damage is converted to cold. That means 'added physical damage' is partly converted, while 'added cold/cold damage %', 'cold penetration', 'attack speed' and 'crit' are more direct gains. Stacking physical penetration is usually worse than cold penetration or cold damage.

Arrow vs Shards: the first arrow is the carrier with limited damage; the real area cold damage comes from the shard fan it bursts into. Shards fly in multiple directions and each hits, so 'hit density' matters more than 'single arrow damage'. Consecutive casts without interrupting or moving stack stages, and higher stages mean more shards — a key reason Ice Shot damage scales with proficiency.

Freeze and chill: cold damage inherently causes chill; when freeze buildup is high enough the target freezes. Normal and magic mobs freeze easily, but rare and boss freeze thresholds scale with their life/type, so 'freezes everything while clearing but can't freeze the boss' is normal, not a miss. Freezing Mark makes freeze more reliable, and Snipe is a channel that empowers the next attack (including conversion and damage boost), the usual boss single-target opener.

Version differences: 0.5 adjusted shard freeze buildup and stage behaviour; exact numbers and caps follow the current client skill panel. Don't treat old-video freeze frequency as the current standard.

  • Stack cold damage / cold pen / attack speed / crit, better than physical penetration.
  • Shards are the main damage segment; consecutive casts stack stages → more shards.
  • Boss won't freeze is a threshold issue, not a hit issue; use Freezing Mark.
  • Snipe empowers the next hit — common boss single-target opener.
  • 0.5 shard freeze and stage behaviour follow the current client panel.

Key Properties and Acquisition

Skill type
Active Attack (Bow)
Tagged attack, projectile, bow, cold, aoe, freeze.
Weapon requirement
Bow
Requires a bow; prioritise high cold damage, attack speed or crit.
Acquisition
Uncut Skill Gem
Unlocked via Uncut Skill Gems; exact unlock tier follows the current Uncut Gem ladder.
Mana cost
Scales with level and combo
High-frequency combos with high mana supports (e.g. Zenith) create noticeable pressure; mitigate via supports and gear.
Quality
Extra shards / cold or freeze
Quality usually adds shards or improves cold/freeze efficiency, strongly boosting staged clear damage.

Recommended Support Gems

Elemental Damage with Attacks
Core
Directly amplifies each attack's elemental (incl. cold) damage; nearly universal on bow-cold.
Higher priority than single physical mods since most Ice Shot damage is already cold.
Cold Attunement
Core
Treats cold as extra damage type and amplifies cold damage/chill scaling; a core cold-bow support.
Near-mandatory where reliable chill/freeze is wanted.
Elemental Armament
Core
Several elemental bonuses and buffs; broadly stable.
Solid core whether physical or elemental Ice Shot.
Martial Tempo
Core
Attack speed, raising stage stacking and shard frequency per second.
Benefits both clear and single-target; a universal core for fast bows.
Chain
Situational
Makes shards ricochet between enemies, greatly improving dense-pack coverage.
Lower value on boss single-target; swap for concentration.
Longshot
Situational
Boosts damage to distant targets, fitting the bow's ranged identity.
Value drops in heavy melee range.
Ice Bite
Situational
Grants charges on freeze, snowballing with high freeze coverage.
Little use in low-freeze boss scenes.
Pinpoint Critical
Situational
Improves crit value; key support for Crit routes.
Not needed on Non-Crit.
Slower Projectiles
Optional
Lower projectile speed makes shards hit the same area more times; useful in specific dense scenes.
Changes feel; test coverage impact.
Cold Penetration
Optional
Strong later on high-cold-resist maps/bosses.
Lower early value than direct cold damage; defer.

Role and Differences Across Builds

Deadeye (bow): the canonical Ice Shot carrier. Deadeye's Far Shot, Tailwind, Escalation (projectile speed/distance) and Gathering Storm directly amplify bow projectile range and coverage, making Ice Shot both a clearer and a safe distant damage dealer. This is the hot Ice Shot route in the current version.

Non-Crit route: skips crit, stacking 'added cold, cold %, attack speed, freeze' for stable chill/freeze and high cold hit damage. Lower gear门槛, stable feel; downside is lower single-target burst ceiling than Crit.

Crit route: stacks crit chance and crit multiplier with Pinpoint Critical, Ice Bite and a high-crit bow for higher single-target and boss ceiling. Cost is higher gear and balancing hit/crit with survival. The two routes differ clearly in supports and attributes: Crit needs crit/crit-multi modifiers, Non-Crit needs cold/attack-speed.

  • Deadeye: main Ice Shot carrier, maximising range/coverage.
  • Non-Crit: low门槛, stable chill/freeze, lower single-target ceiling.
  • Crit: higher single-target ceiling, higher gear cost.
  • Crit wants crit/crit-multi; Non-Crit wants cold/attack speed.

Common Mistakes: Why It Fires but Underperforms

Playing Ice Shot as pure physical: not realising 80% is already cold, still stacking physical penetration or pure physical big hits, leaving cold damage unmaxed. Switch to cold damage, cold pen, attack speed and freeze efficiency.

Single arrow then stop: without consecutive casts to stack stages, shard count and total damage are low. Keep the combo going to stack stages; shards then spread.

Expecting the boss to freeze: boss freeze threshold is high; normal Ice Shot rarely freezes it. Single-target should use Snipe-empowered + concentrated shards + Freezing Mark, not wait for freeze.

Mana empty: high-frequency combos are mana-heavy; without Zenith or mana support it stutters. Check supports and gear mana/regen.

Wrong weapon-stage timing: players confuse 'campaign transitional bow skill' with 'late main skill Ice Shot'. Ice Shot usually becomes the true main only after a higher-tier bow and matching supports.

  • Problem: low damage. Answer: stack cold/cold pen, not physical pen.
  • Problem: few shards, can't clear. Answer: consecutive casts to stack stages, don't single-fire.
  • Problem: boss won't freeze. Answer: Snipe + Freezing Mark, don't wait for freeze.
  • Problem: mana drains. Answer: add Zenith or mana support.
  • Problem: confused main-skill timing. Answer: Ice Shot matures with a higher-tier bow + supports.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which is the main damage — the arrow or the shards?

The bursting ice shards are the main area cold damage; the first arrow is more a carrier.

Consecutive casts stack stages and add shards, so total damage scales clearly with proficiency.

Why won't the boss freeze?

Boss freeze threshold scales with its life/type; normal cold rarely fills freeze buildup.

Single-target should use Snipe empowerment, shard concentration and Freezing Mark, not wait for freeze.

How to choose Non-Crit vs Crit?

Non-Crit has lower门槛 and stable feel, good for league start and clear; Crit has higher single-target ceiling but much higher gear cost.

They differ in affixes: Crit wants crit/crit-multi, Non-Crit wants cold/attack speed.

Mana cost is high, what to do?

High-frequency combos are mana-heavy; prioritise Zenith-class support or gear mana/regen.

You can also lower combo frequency while keeping coverage, rather than forcing mana.
