Oil Grenade Guide — Oil Ground, Ignite, Slow and Fire Damage Setup

Oil Grenade throws a bottle that covers enemies in oil and leaves an Oil Ground. Oiled enemies are Slowed and take increased Fire Damage. Igniting the Oil Ground turns it into a burning patch that deals Fire Damage, and the ignited ground adds part of that Fire Damage into your Ignite. It is the Fire Grenade setup's debuff-and-damage layer, not just a resistance shredder.

Quick Answer

Oil Grenade does two things: it coats enemies in oil (Slow + increased Fire Damage taken) and it leaves an Oil Ground patch.

The big payoff is ignition. When a Fire skill ignites the Oil Ground, the patch burns and deals Fire Damage, and part of that Fire Damage is added into your Ignite on enemies standing in it.

Oil does not simply lower Fire Resistance. It is a debuff that makes oiled enemies take more Fire Damage and moves slowly; the damage comes from igniting the ground, not from a resistance shred.

Quick Facts

Category
Grenade / Fire / Debuff
Tagged attack, grenade, fire, ailment, debuff.
Oil debuff
Slow + increased Fire Damage taken
Oiled enemies are slowed and take more fire damage from your hits.
Oil Ground
Leave a ground patch
The patch can be ignited to burn and add fire damage to Ignite.
Acquisition
Uncut Skill Gem (Tier 4)
Obtained from an Uncut Skill Gem; sockets into a crossbow skill slot.
Best role
Fire setup debuff + ignite layer
Pairs with fire skills; weak as a standalone damage skill.

Requirements

No special attribute gate. The skill throws a grenade on a cooldown; you need a Fire skill to ignite the Oil Ground for the real payoff.

Because it is a grenade, it shares the grenade cooldown with other grenades on the same button group — throwing Oil Grenade starts that cooldown.

Fire skill to ignite
Required for payoff
Without ignition the Oil Ground just slows; no burn damage.
Grenade cooldown
Shared with other grenades
Plan grenade order around the cooldown.

Grenade Timeline

The lifecycle is: throw the bottle → it shatters on impact → enemies hit are oiled (Slow + increased Fire Damage taken) and an Oil Ground appears where it landed.

While the Oil Ground lasts, enemies standing in it are oiled. When a Fire skill ignites the ground, it begins burning and deals Fire Damage, and that burning adds part of its Fire Damage into any Ignite on those enemies.

The Oil Ground expires on its own after its duration, or is consumed by ignition. Managing the window — oil first, then ignite while enemies are still in the patch — is the whole skill.

  • Throw → shatter → oil debuff + Oil Ground.
  • Ignite the ground → burn + added Fire Damage to Ignite.
  • Ground expires or is consumed by ignition.

Debuff Analysis: What Oil Actually Does

Oil Grenade's debuff is not a Fire Resistance shred. It makes oiled enemies take increased Fire Damage (a 'more fire damage taken' effect) and Slows them. Both help a Fire build but neither is a resistance cut.

The Slow is valuable on its own for kiting and for keeping enemies in the Oil Ground so your ignition lands. The increased Fire Damage taken amplifies every fire hit you land while they are oiled.

This is why Oil Grenade is a setup skill: it prepares the enemy and the ground, then your Fire skills (and the ignited ground) do the damage. Used alone it barely hurts.

  • Oil = increased Fire Damage taken + Slow, not resistance shred.
  • Slow keeps enemies in the patch for ignition.
  • It is a setup skill, not a damage skill alone.

Support Compatibility

Supports should extend the ground (Duration), widen the patch (Area), shorten the cooldown, or add fire/area scaling. The skill's own hit is minor, so direct-hit supports are low priority.

Increased Duration
Recommended
Keeps the Oil Ground alive long enough to ignite.
Magnified / Area supports
Recommended
Bigger patch covers more enemies for oil + ignite.
Cooldown Recovery
Situational
Lets you oil more often; shares grenade cooldown.
Fire/Area damage supports
Situational
Scale the ignited burn if supported.

Support Loadouts

A setup-focused loadout keeps the ground available and wide; damage scaling lives on your Fire skills.

  1. Setup loadoutSocket Duration, Area and Cooldown Recovery on Oil Grenade.Longer, wider, more frequent Oil Ground.
  2. Ignition skillsScale your Fire skills (Incendiary Shot / Fire spell) for the burn. The ignited ground deals real damage.

Skill Interactions

Explosive Shot / Explosive Grenade: if they deal Fire Damage they ignite the Oil Ground; otherwise they just hit. They do not 'waste' the oil, but the ignition specifically needs a fire source.

Gas Grenade + Ignite: a common combo — Gas Grenade then Oil, then a fire skill, layering poison and fire in the same patch.

Incendiary Shot: a direct fire crossbow skill that ignites the Oil Ground cleanly for crossbow Fire builds.

  • Fire-dealing hits ignite the ground; non-fire hits do not.
  • Gas Grenade layers with Oil for poison + fire.
  • Incendiary Shot is the crossbow ignition tool.

Mapping Rotation

In maps, oil packs and ignite them as you move. The Slow keeps enemies grouped, and the burning ground clears the stragglers.

  1. Oil the packThrow Oil Grenade into the group.Enemies are oiled and Slowed; Oil Ground appears.
  2. IgniteHit the patch with a Fire skill.Ground burns; added Fire Damage to Ignite.

Bossing Rotation

On bosses, Oil Grenade is a debuff layer: oil the boss for Slow + increased Fire Damage taken, then keep Fire skills on it. You usually do not need to keep the Oil Ground refreshed constantly — one good oil application during the fire window is enough.

  1. Oil the bossThrow Oil Grenade at the boss as it becomes targetable.Boss is Slowed and takes more Fire Damage.
  2. Fire windowSpam Fire skills while oiled; ignite the patch if the boss stands in it.Maximum fire damage during the window.

Build Usage

Fire Gemling / Smith of Kitava: Oil Grenade is the debuff layer in a fire grenade or fire attack pile, paired with Explosive Grenade and Incendiary Shot.

Crossbow fire builds: any build already running Fire skills uses Oil Grenade to amplify them via increased Fire Damage taken and the ignited ground.

Bossing fire setups: Oil Grenade's Slow also helps melee fire builds stick to the boss.

  • Fire Gemling: oil + explode + ignite stack.
  • Any fire crossbow: amplify with oil.
  • Boss fire: Slow helps uptime.

Troubleshooting

No burn damage: you never ignited the ground. Direct answer: hit the Oil Ground with a Fire skill; a non-fire hit will not ignite it.

Enemy not taking more fire damage: the oil debuff expired. Direct answer: reapply Oil Grenade; the increased Fire Damage taken is tied to the oiled state.

Grenade on cooldown when needed: you threw another grenade first. Direct answer: plan grenade order; Oil Grenade shares the grenade cooldown.

Boss barely hurt: Oil Grenade alone is a setup, not damage. Direct answer: follow with Fire skills and ignite the patch.

  1. No ignitionUse a Fire skill on the Oil Ground.Ground burns and adds to Ignite.
  2. Oil expiredReapply Oil Grenade before the fire window.Increased Fire Damage taken is active.
  3. Cooldown clashSequence grenades; don't pre-throw.Oil ready when needed.

Community Evidence

Players consistently report Oil Grenade feeling weak until they realise the ignition step is required — the ground must be set on fire for the damage.

The 'does it lower Fire Resistance?' question is common; the answer players settle on is increased Fire Damage taken plus Slow, not a resistance cut.

After the 0.4 buffs (shorter cooldown, longer ground, stronger attack damage, stronger ignite addition) the skill is treated as a core fire-setup tool rather than a niche pick.

  • Recurring issue: forgot to ignite the ground.
  • Recurring question: oil = more fire damage taken, not res shred.
  • 0.4 buffs made it a fire-core tool.
