Tempest Bell Guide — Quarterstaff Combo Object, Shockwave Interval and Placement

Tempest Bell is a deployable Quarterstaff object skill: build Combo, drop a bell, then strike it so it emits periodic shockwaves. This guide explains where Combo comes from, how many bells you can have / how long they last / how many hits they take, why attack speed can't break the strict shockwave interval, how elemental ailments add damage to the bell, and the controller vs mouse-keyboard targeting difference.

Overview: Combo → Place → Strike

Tempest Bell is a deployable 'bell' you drop on the battlefield: you first build Combo with Quarterstaff combos, cast Tempest Bell at your feet or a target location, then strike the bell with your attacks so it periodically emits shockwaves that damage enemies in range.

Its damage doesn't come from the bell's own stats but from the Combo you've banked when you strike it: higher Combo usually means more shockwave hits, more damage and wider radius. So Tempest Bell is almost always bound to a Quarterstaff combo chain — it's an amplifier of the chain, not a standalone opener.

That's why it's common across Whirling Assault, Ice Strike and Tempest Flurry builds: those builds already stack Combo, and Tempest Bell converts banked Combo into a large, stackable, sustained burst.

  • Essence: deployable object + periodic shockwaves; damage scales with Combo at strike time.
  • Prereq: build Combo with staff combos, then place and strike the bell.
  • Role: damage amplifier for staff chains, not a standalone opener.
  • Common carriers: Whirling Assault, Ice Strike, Tempest Flurry staff builds.

Uncut Skill Gem
Unlocked via an Uncut Skill Gem from campaign or drops.
Combo dependence
High (core)
Shockwave damage / count / radius tie directly to Combo at strike time.
Quality
Improves per-hit scaling / cap
Higher quality usually grants more per-hit scaling and may raise the hit cap.
Overabundance
Second bell at high quality
In some versions Overabundance-quality or support enables a second concurrent bell, changing coverage.

Mechanics: Where Combo Comes From and Drops

Combo source: Quarterstaff combo skills (e.g. Whirling Assault, Tempest Flurry, parts of Ice Strike) accumulate Combo on consecutive hits. Tempest Bell itself produces no Combo — it only spends the Combo you already have as shockwaves. So you must land a few combo hits before placing the bell.

Drop conditions: the staff Combo system has clear decay / break rules — if you stall, get knocked back, switch actions or stop attacking too long, Combo resets or decays fast. That makes Tempest Bell's burst window short: you must place and strike the bell while Combo is still high.

Relationship to Charge: some staff builds also stack Charge (fury / power balls), but Tempest Bell reads Combo, not Charge. Don't confuse them — stacking Charge won't make the bell stronger; stacking Combo will.

  • Combo accumulates from staff combo hits; Tempest Bell spends, doesn't generate, Combo.
  • Stalling, knockback, action swaps or idle time decay / reset Combo.
  • Burst window is short: place and strike while Combo is high.
  • Tempest Bell scales with Combo, not Charge.

Placement and Target Selection

Placement rule: the bell drops at your location or aim point. Against a boss, placing it at the boss's feet or where you can reliably strike it matters — the farther the bell, the harder to hit consistently and the worse the shockwave coverage aligns with the boss.

Boss size and terrain: a large boss model can block your strikes on the bell (when the bell sits on the boss's far side, your attacks hit the boss body instead). Common fix is to place the bell on the side facing you, or use positioning so nothing sits between you and the bell.

Controller vs mouse-keyboard targeting: a high-complaint area. The controller's auto-lock logic for 'place + strike' differs markedly from keyboard-mouse; controller players more often drop the bell in odd spots or get yanked by auto-lock. Keyboard-mouse players control the bell landing and strike rhythm far more precisely.

  • Bell drops at feet or aim point; boss fights favor a reliably striked position.
  • Large boss models can block strikes; mind the bell's relative position.
  • Controller auto-lock misplaces bells; keyboard-mouse is more controllable.

Shockwave: Strict Interval Attack Speed Can't Break

Strict interval: shockwaves don't fire 'once per strike' — they emit on a fixed time interval. Striking faster only feeds the bell more often; the emission rhythm is set by that fixed interval. More attack speed cannot shorten the interval or squeeze an extra wave into one interval.

What attack speed actually does: high attack speed helps you fill Combo faster, stack per-hit scaling to the cap faster, and maintain strikes on the bell while repositioning. It improves 'effective output prep per unit time', not shockwave frequency itself.

Elemental ailment bonus: if the bell or nearby enemies are Ignited / Frozen / Shocked, shockwaves gain corresponding elemental bonus damage. This is why Tempest Bell paired with elemental ground / ice builds (e.g. Ice Strike + Hollow Form shatter) can explode.

Knockback expands shockwaves: Knockback from some supports or modifiers widens the shockwave radius and covers more enemies. In dense packs Knockback significantly boosts clear, but it can also scatter enemies and destabilize single-target boss coverage.

  • Shockwaves emit on a fixed interval; attack speed can't shorten or add waves.
  • Real value of attack speed: faster Combo fill, faster per-hit scaling, sustained hits.
  • Fire / cold / lightning ailments add corresponding bonus damage to shockwaves.
  • Knockback widens shockwaves — good for clear, can scatter boss targets.

Recommended Support Gems

Overabundance
Core
Raises the bell's hit cap / duration — the most core Tempest Bell support.
In some versions also brings a second bell, directly changing coverage.
Close Combat
Core
The bell is usually at your feet, so melee scaling is reliably full.
Fits almost any stack-and-strike build.
Concentrated Effect
Core
Smaller radius for higher center / single-target damage; common in bossing.
Less ideal for clearing than area supports.
Heavy Swing
Situational
Boosts each strike's weight, amplifying shockwaves with high Combo.
Exact benefit verified on current client.
Elemental Focus / elemental supports
Situational
If you feed the bell with cold / lightning ailments, elemental supports amplify that bonus.
Must match the ailment type you actually use.
Martial Tempo
Optional
Attack speed to feed the bell and stack scaling faster.
Clear value when low on attack speed; replace once saturated.

Role in Builds

Whirling Assault Martial Artist: one of the most typical carriers. Staff combos rapidly build Combo, Tempest Bell converts it into a stack-and-strike shockwave burst, good for rares and boss windows.

Ice Strike / Tempest Flurry builds: these already stack combos and cold ailments; the bell's shockwaves eat cold bonus damage, forming shatter-clears with a Hollow Form-style shell.

Low-level vs endgame difference: at low level both Combo cap and bell hit cap are low, so Tempest Bell is more of a clear supplement; endgame with full Combo + Overabundance it becomes a real burst core. Overabundance's value swings hugely by level — a common beginner misread.

  • Whirling Assault: combo → bell burst, rares / bosses alike.
  • Ice Strike / Tempest Flurry: shockwaves eat cold ailments, shatter clear.
  • Low level = clear supplement; endgame full Combo + Overabundance = burst core.

Common Mistakes: Can't Place / Can't Hit / No Combo

Can't place the bell: usually an illegal landing spot (feet blocked by terrain / corpse / obstacle) or controller auto-lock dropping it on a wall. Direct answer: pick an open landing or disable auto-lock and place manually.

Can't hit the bell: it's on the boss's far side, blocked by the boss model, or you're too far. Direct answer: place it on the unobstructed side between you and the boss, or stand close and strike in place.

Combo not growing: you placed the bell without first building Combo with staff combos, or stalled too long before placing so Combo decayed. Direct answer: land 2–4 combo hits to fill Combo, then immediately place and strike.

Thinking attack speed speeds shockwaves: shockwaves emit on a fixed interval; attack speed only affects feeding. Direct answer: don't stack attack speed pointlessly 'for faster waves' — prioritize Combo and per-hit scaling.

  • Issue: bell won't place.
  • Direct answer: landing blocked / controller lock; pick open spot, place manually.
  • Issue: can't hit bell / blocked by boss.
  • Direct answer: bell on unobstructed side, strike in place.
  • Issue: Combo not growing, weak bell.
  • Direct answer: build Combo first, don't stall before placing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does attack speed make shockwaves fire faster?

No. Shockwaves emit on a fixed interval; attack speed only affects how fast you feed the bell and stack scaling.

To raise DPS prioritize Combo and per-hit scaling, not raw attack speed.

Why is my bell so weak?

Usually Combo wasn't built before placing, or you stalled too long and Combo decayed.

Land a few staff combo hits to fill Combo, then place and strike immediately.

What do elemental ailments do for the bell?

Fire / cold / lightning ailments grant the shockwaves corresponding bonus damage.

Cold builds (Ice Strike + shatter) especially burst off this.
