Whirling Assault Skill Guide — Moving Spin, Multi-hit Zones, Melee Positioning

Whirling Assault is a melee attack: you advance while spinning, dealing repeated area damage around you. This guide covers total attack time and movement, consecutive strikes and multiple damage zones, the 0.5 melee splash rule impact, what the Quality-to-attack-speed change means, why it gets stuck on walls or crowd-controlled, and how Tempest Bell and Hollow Form connect.

Overview: What Whirling Assault Does

Whirling Assault is a melee attack: once activated you advance while spinning, repeatedly dealing area damage to enemies in a ring around you. Available from level 1, it is one of the few Warrior skills that can be your whole-run main, and a core clear tool for Martial Artist (Monk), Titan and Smith of Kitava melee builds.

The most misunderstood part is thinking it is a 'stand-still spin' — it is actually a forward-moving sustained attack, and your movement direction decides the area you clear. That is why 'walls, narrow terrain, crowd control' directly break its rhythm, the key difference from stationary AoE.

Real damage comes from 'the multi-hit zone around you during the spin', not a single heavy hit. Continuous spinning plus sustained advance sweeps a whole screen; stopping or wrong direction breaks the damage.

  • Essence: melee attack + advancing spin AoE + multi-hit.
  • Available at level 1, a common whole-run Warrior main.
  • Damage is the multi-hit zone during the spin, not a single strike.
  • Walls, narrow terrain and CC break rhythm — the key vs stationary AoE.

Core Mechanics: Movement Path, Multi-hit Zones, Splash

Movement path and attack ring: after activation the character advances along input direction while spinning; the spin area (attack ring) moves with the character. The 'swath' you clear is the damage coverage; sweeping back and forth covers better than spinning in place. Controller and mouse-keyboard differ in turn feel but the principle is the same.

Consecutive strikes and multiple damage zones: during the spin it repeatedly resolves damage (multi-hit) to enemies in range. Pairing Magnified Area / Close Combat widens the hit zone for best clear. Note the 'same-target hit limit' — on a single boss, multi-hits have diminishing returns, so single-target ceiling is lower than clear-after-full-coverage.

0.5 melee splash rule: 0.5 changed melee splash to 'splash resolves only once per damaging area'. This means old tricks of stacking splash overlaps are weakened; Whirling Assault total damage now relies more on 'coverage × duration × attack speed' than on stacking splash layers.

Quality change: in 0.5 Whirling Assault Quality changed from a 'more multiplier'-style bonus to a flat 20% increased attack speed. In other words Quality now simply makes you spin faster with shorter intervals — a stable, universal investment rather than gambling on a segment multiplier.

  • Sustained advance + sweep back and forth = best coverage; spinning in place is inefficient.
  • Multi-hit zone is the damage source; same-target limit diminishes boss value.
  • 0.5 splash resolves once per area; layer-stacking value dropped.
  • Quality is now +20% attack speed, stable and universal.

Key Properties and Acquisition

Skill type
Active Attack (Melee)
Tagged attack, melee, aoe, movement, duration.
Weapon requirement
Quarterstaff / two-handed melee (glaive, maul, etc.)
Common on Quarterstaff builds (Martial Artist); Warrior can also pair glaive/maul two-handers.
Acquisition
Uncut Skill Gem
Unlockable early in the campaign; one of few level-1 main melee skills.
Mana cost
Scales with level
Sustained high-frequency spin is mana-heavy; Titan often uses the Blood Magic keystone to remove mana need.
Quality
+20% attack speed
0.5 changed to attack-speed bonus, directly improving interval and total-damage efficiency.

Recommended Support Gems

Martial Tempo
Core
Attack speed, spinning faster with shorter intervals.
Near-universal core across Whirling Assault variants.
Magnified Area
Core
Widens the spin hit zone, directly improving clear coverage.
Lower boss value than clear, but still a stable investment.
Prolonged Duration
Core
Extends the spin duration, sweeping a larger area per activation.
Best feel paired with sustained advance.
Close Combat
Situational
Bonus when close to targets, fitting the face-tank spin style.
Lower value when positioning stays outward.
Rage
Situational
Pairs with Warrior/Monk Rage loop for damage and survivability.
Needs a stable Rage generation source first.
Brutality
Situational
Drops elemental damage for higher physical hit; for pure physical versions.
Elemental versions (with elemental add) must not take it.
Rapid Attacks
Situational
More attack speed, a direct bonus to multi-hit builds.
Watch marginal returns when stacked with Martial Tempo.
Elemental Armament
Optional
Core if running elemental add (Herald of Ash / fire infuse); skip on pure physical.
Only effective when paired with 'weapon adds elemental'.
Ancestral Call
Optional
Summons ancestors to strike, adding hit zones and total damage.
Higher budget; not required for basic clear.
Armour Explosion
Optional
Extra effect on armoured enemies; useful in specific scenes (high-armour/boss).
Unstable generic clear value.

Role and Differences Across Builds

Martial Artist (Monk / Hollow Form): a quintessential Whirling Assault carrier. With Hollow Form you generate Hollow Form images/charges during the spin, using Way of the Stonefist and specific gloves (e.g. Lochtonial Caress) to continuously produce charges, turning 'spinning' into a loop that both clears and stacks resources.

Titan (Warrior ascendancy): Titan's Hulking Form converts Strength into Area of Effect, letting Whirling Assault clear entire screens late; Crushing Impacts shatter enemies on crit (area explosion), Colossus increases size for wider AoE. Titan often uses Blood Magic to remove mana need for 'mindless spinning'.

Smith of Kitava (Warrior ascendancy): can pair a maul/two-hander, using Whirling Assault as main clear then Tempest Bell for single-target. Differs from Titan in leaning toward damage reduction and fire/armour rather than pure area scaling.

  • Martial Artist: Hollow Form images/charges, spin = stack resources.
  • Titan: Hulking Form Strength-to-AoE, Blood Magic solves mana.
  • Smith of Kitava: main clear + Tempest Bell single-target.
  • All bosses use Tempest Bell / Charge combo, not pure spin.

Common Mistakes: Why the Spin Keeps Breaking

Stuck on walls or narrow terrain: the spin attack depends on sustained advance; corners, doorways and pack gaps bend movement direction so the ring misses targets. Correct play is to anticipate terrain and sweep along open lanes, not spin against walls.

Mana empty: sustained high-frequency spin is mana-heavy; without solving mana (Titan's Blood Magic, gear mana mods) it stutters. Solve the mana bottleneck before stacking damage.

Hard-fighting after CC: knockback, pin, stun directly break the spin rhythm. Need resistances, stun immunity or positioning, not stand-and-spin.

Boss with spin only: boss is limited by same-target hits, so pure spin has diminishing single-target returns. Correct play uses the Tempest Bell (resonant bell) + Mantra of Destruction + Infernal Cry burst combo — spin to build combo/resources, then detonate the boss.

Misreading 0.5 nerf: 0.5 splash resolves once per area and Quality became attack speed, so peak damage is lower than 0.4; don't treat old-video instant-kills as the current standard.

  • Problem: can't clear, ring misses. Answer: sweep open lanes, avoid corners.
  • Problem: mana drains. Answer: Blood Magic or mana mods first.
  • Problem: rhythm breaks after CC. Answer: stack resist/stun immunity, don't stand.
  • Problem: slow boss. Answer: Tempest Bell + Mantra + Infernal Cry burst.
  • Problem: weaker than old video. Answer: 0.5 splash and Quality changed; don't copy old numbers.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Whirling Assault a stand-still spin?

No. It is a forward-moving sustained spin; movement direction decides the area you clear.

Walls and narrow terrain break rhythm; sweep open lanes back and forth for best coverage.

Is it weaker after the 0.5 changes?

0.5 changed melee splash to resolve once per area and removed the old Quality multiplier, replacing it with +20% attack speed.

Peak damage is lower than 0.4, but as a low-investment league-start clear it remains strong.

How to handle boss single-target?

Pure spin is limited by same-target hits, diminishing single-target returns.

Use the Tempest Bell + Mantra of Destruction + Infernal Cry burst combo; spin builds combo and resources.

Mana not enough?

Sustained high-frequency spin is mana-heavy; prioritise Blood Magic keystone or gear mana/regen.

Titan commonly uses Blood Magic for mindless spinning.
