Wind Dancer Guide — Stages, Evasion, Hit Consumption and Spirit Value

Wind Dancer is a Spirit gem that reserves 30 Spirit. It is a persistent defensive buff that grants Stages; each Stage gives increased Evasion. When you are Hit by an enemy, you lose Stages. Since the 0.2 change it consumes on any Enemy Hit rather than only Melee Attacks, making it a general defensive layer for evasion builds.

Quick Answer

Wind Dancer reserves 30 Spirit and gives you Stages, each Stage adding increased Evasion. It is a persistent defensive layer for evasion-based builds.

When you are Hit by an enemy, you lose Stages. Since the 0.2 change, any Enemy Hit consumes a Stage, not just Melee Attacks, so it helps against ranged and AoE enemies too.

At zero Stages you lose the Evasion bonus but are not penalised otherwise. Entering a new area resets you to zero Stages, so you rebuild them as you fight. The 30 Spirit competes with Herald, Combat Frenzy and Ghost Dance.

Requirements

No special attribute gate. The real requirement is that your build already invests in Evasion — Wind Dancer multiplies Evasion, so on a low-Evasion character the bonus is small.

Evasion investment
Required for value
Wind Dancer scales your Evasion; low Evasion = low payoff.
30 Spirit
Reserved while active
Cheap; fits most evasion budgets.

Persistent Buff

Wind Dancer is a persistent buff: once enabled it stays on, reserving 30 Spirit, and passively tracks your Stages. You do not activate it per hit; it is always watching.

State
Always on while reserved
Reserves 30 Spirit for the whole map or fight.
Stages
Built and consumed passively
No manual input; Stages change from combat events.

Defensive Stages

You gain Stages over time while fighting (and, depending on the patch, from evading enemy hits). The maximum number of Stages is small — commonly four at higher gem levels — and each Stage grants increased Evasion Rating, the percentage scaling with the gem's level.

More Stages means more Evasion, which raises your chance to evade attacks. The bonus is multiplicative on your Evasion, so it is strongest when your base Evasion is already high.

This is a mechanic explanation, not a survival calculator. A higher Evasion number does not guarantee a fixed reduction in damage taken, because actual evasion depends on the attacker's accuracy and other modifiers.

  • Stages build during combat; maximum is a small number (commonly 4).
  • Each Stage adds increased Evasion (scales with gem level).
  • Bonus multiplies your Evasion; best on already-evasive builds.

Hit Consumption

Since the 0.2 change, being Hit by an enemy consumes a Stage. It is no longer limited to Melee Attacks — ranged hits and AoE also consume a Stage. A single hit consumes one Stage, not all of them, so several hits in a row strip Stages gradually.

When you reach zero Stages, the Evasion bonus disappears but nothing else bad happens; you simply lose the layered Evasion until you rebuild Stages. Knockback and AoE still count as enemy hits if they actually strike you.

  • Any Enemy Hit consumes one Stage (since 0.2, not just Melee).
  • One hit = one Stage, not all Stages.
  • Zero Stages = no bonus, no extra penalty.

Evasion Analysis

Damage-over-Time effects (poison, burning, ignored ground) do not consume Stages, because they are not enemy hits. Evade, Block and Deflect also do not consume Stages — those are successful avoids, not hits taken.

Boss red-flash telegraphed attacks are still enemy hits and will consume a Stage when they land. Tooltip Evasion and real evade chance are not the same: actual evasion depends on the attacker's accuracy, so do not read a higher tooltip Evasion as a fixed survival gain.

Low-Evasion gear makes Wind Dancer weak: the percentage bonus is applied to a small base, so the absolute Evasion gained is minor. It is a multiplier, not a flat floor.

  • DoT, Evade, Block, Deflect do NOT consume Stages.
  • Boss red-flash hits DO consume a Stage.
  • Tooltip Evasion is not real evade chance; gear matters.

Spirit Budget

At 30 Spirit, Wind Dancer is cheap. The tradeoff is against Herald of Ice / Herald of Thunder, Combat Frenzy and Ghost Dance — all useful defensive or offensive Spirit skills. Because it is cheap, many evasion builds run it alongside one of those.

Support Compatibility

Wind Dancer is a persistentbuff rather than an attack, so most supports do not apply. The value comes from the gem level (more Evasion per Stage) and from your own Evasion investment, not from socketed supports.

Higher level = more Evasion per Stage.

Your Evasion investment decides the absolute payoff.

Mapping Value

In maps you are hit frequently by many enemies, which keeps stripping Stages, but you also rebuild them fast between packs. The layered Evasion noticeably cuts incoming hits during clear, especially on evasion builds that already evade well.

  1. Fight the packEngage; Stages build and are consumed by hits.Evasion bonus smooths incoming damage.

Bossing Value

On bosses, big telegraphed hits consume Stages one at a time; the Evasion bonus helps dodge smaller hits but a single heavy hit still lands and strips a Stage. It is a decent defensive layer but not a substitute for proper avoidance and defences.

  1. Survive the patternUse the Evasion bonus to dodge chips; avoid reds.Stages absorb some chip damage but big hits still land.

Build Usage

Ice Shot Deadeye: an evasion bow build that uses Wind Dancer as a standard defensive layer.

Whirling Assault Martial Artist: a dexterity melee build that already stacks Evasion, making the Stages meaningful.

Any evasion-stacking build: if you invest in Evasion, Wind Dancer multiplies it for a cheap 30 Spirit.

  • Ice Shot Deadeye evasion layer.
  • Whirling Assault Martial Artist.
  • Any build with high Evasion investment.

Troubleshooting

No bonus when entering an area: Stages reset to zero on area entry. Direct answer: rebuild Stages by fighting; they return within seconds.

Feels weak: your Evasion is too low. Direct answer: Wind Dancer multiplies Evasion; raise your base Evasion for a real payoff.

Stages vanish in boss fights: red-flash hits consume them. Direct answer: that is expected; dodge the big hits, the bonus helps chips.

Swapped Weapon Set and lost it: you enabled it on only one set. Direct answer: enable Wind Dancer on both sets if you want it always on.

  1. Fresh area, no StagesFight to rebuild Stages.Evasion bonus returns quickly.
  2. Weak payoffRaise base Evasion.Stages multiply a bigger number.

Community Evidence

Players widely note the 0.2 change from Melee Attack to Enemy Hit made Wind Dancer far more broadly useful, since ranged and AoE builds now benefit.

The 'entered a new area and lost all Stages' confusion is common; the reset on area entry is intended.

The main debate is 30 Spirit versus Herald / Combat Frenzy / Ghost Dance; evasion builds usually keep Wind Dancer as the defensive pick.

  • Recurring note: 0.2 Enemy-Hit change broadened use.
  • Recurring question: why no Stages in a new area? Reset by design.
  • Debate: 30 Spirit vs other Spirit skills.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does Wind Dancer do in Path of Exile 2?

Wind Dancer is a Spirit gem that reserves 30 Spirit and grants Stages, each Stage giving increased Evasion. It is a persistent defensive buff for evasion-based builds — you do not activate it per hit; it runs continuously while reserved and passively tracks your Stages.

How do you gain Stages with Wind Dancer?

Stages build passively while you fight, and (depending on the patch) from evading enemy hits. The maximum is a small number — commonly four at higher gem levels — and each Stage adds increased Evasion that scales with the gem's level.

More Stages means a higher Evasion rating, which raises your chance to evade attacks. The bonus multiplies your Evasion, so it is strongest when your base Evasion is already high.

Does one hit remove all Stages or just one?

A single enemy hit consumes exactly one Stage, not all of them. Several hits in a row strip Stages gradually, so you keep partial Evasion until you reach zero Stages, where the bonus simply disappears with no extra penalty.

Does Wind Dancer work against ranged attacks and Area of Effect?

Yes. Since the 0.2 change it consumes a Stage on any Enemy Hit, not just Melee Attacks. Ranged shots and AoE that actually strike you also consume a Stage, making Wind Dancer a general defensive layer rather than a melee-only tool.

Why did I lose all my Stages in a new area?

Entering a new area resets your Stages to zero by design. You rebuild them within seconds by fighting. This is intended behaviour, not a bug — many players are briefly confused the first time it happens.

Do Evade, Block or Deflect consume Wind Dancer Stages?

No. Those are successful avoids, not hits taken, so they do not consume Stages. Damage-over-Time effects such as poison, burning and ground effects also do not consume Stages, because they are not enemy hits.

Is Wind Dancer worth the 30 Spirit?

For evasion builds, usually yes. At 30 Spirit it is cheap and leaves room for one more small Spirit skill. The tradeoff is against Herald of Ice / Herald of Thunder, Combat Frenzy and Ghost Dance — pick the layer your build needs most; evasion builds often keep Wind Dancer as the defensive pick.

What builds use Wind Dancer?

Evasion bow builds such as Ice Shot Deadeye, dexterity melee like Whirling Assault Martial Artist, and any build that already invests heavily in Evasion. Because it multiplies Evasion, it is weak on low-Evasion characters and should not be forced onto non-evasion setups.
