Build Overview

ED + Contagion is effective because it turns target selection into propagation: Contagion marks the pack, Essence Drain supplies the damaging debuff, and a death carries the package onward. The build feels poor when those two casts land on unrelated targets, so aiming and pack order matter more than another line of tooltip damage.

For bosses, propagation disappears. The build becomes a maintenance setup: keep Essence Drain active, add Despair only when the target warrants the cast, maintain Dark Effigy totems, and move while damage over time continues. That mobility is the payoff for accepting a slower, layered damage ramp.

This guide separates the three real rhythms — the Mapping clear loop, the Boss Opening sequence and the Sustained Boss loop — so the cast order of Essence Drain, Contagion, Despair and Dark Effigy is never ambiguous.

  • Apply the two-skill spread setup to a pack, then move while the damage resolves.
  • Refresh Essence Drain and the chosen curse before their coverage expires.
  • Against bosses, add only the auxiliary skills verified for the selected variant; do not merge every guide's buttons.

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Low gear floor for campaign progression.
  • Damage continues while the player repositions.
  • Contagion can turn one successful application into pack clear.

Cons

  • Damage is delayed rather than immediate.
  • Bossing needs several debuffs or auxiliary skills.
  • Different endgame guides disagree on auxiliary skills and defence.

Combat Rotations

The build has three different rhythms. Mapping is a spread loop, the boss opening is a fixed setup sequence, and sustained bossing is a repeating maintenance loop. Mixing them up — casting Contagion on a lone boss, or standing still to spam Essence Drain — is the most common mistake.

Mapping Rotation (clear loop): cast Contagion first so the pack is marked contagious, then land Essence Drain on any target inside that area. Because the target is contagious, ED's spread copies the DoT to every nearby Contagion-affected enemy. Move immediately; the damage resolves while you reposition. Dark Effigy can be planted to auto-maintain ED/Despair on the cluster.

Boss Opening Rotation (how the fight starts): open with Despair — the curse that lowers chaos resistance and amplifies everything after it. Then plant Dark Effigy, the totem/support that auto-casts ED + Despair for hands-free uptime. Finally apply Essence Drain to lay the main DoT. Contagion is normally skipped on a single boss because there is nothing to spread to.

Sustained Boss Rotation (the repeating loop once opened): re-apply Essence Drain before its duration expires, keep the Dark Effigy totem alive and repositioned (it can miss a moving boss, so you must re-cast ED yourself), refresh Despair when it falls off, and keep moving between mechanics. The rhythm is refresh → reposition → refresh, never stationary casting.

  • Mapping: Contagion → Essence Drain → move (optional Dark Effigy).
  • Boss open: Despair → Dark Effigy → Essence Drain.
  • Sustained: refresh Essence Drain → keep Dark Effigy → refresh Despair → move.

Aim the spread at one shared target

Leveling

  1. Campaign start (pre-core)

Before ED + Contagion unlock, use a chaos or filler DoT spell and stabilize life, resistances and movement speed. Do not force the DoT chain early.

  2. Acts 2–4 (core online)

Run Essence Drain + Contagion once available. Add reliable single-target support (Dark Effigy, Despair) without sacrificing the basic spread loop.

  3. Campaign end

Build Energy Shield and recovery while maintaining gem levels.

  4. Early maps

Decide whether the default Full-Life shell or a later Low-Life transition is being followed.

Skills

Core skills

Essence Drain
Primary chaos DoT; the damaging debuff that spreads through Contagion.

Why: It is the source of the persistent chaos damage — once applied to a Contagion-affected target it spreads to the whole pack, and on bosses it is the maintained DoT.

When to replace: Never replaced; it is the core damage skill from leveling to endgame. Only supports and gem levels change.

Mapping vs Bossing: Mapping: cast Contagion first, then Essence Drain on a target inside it to trigger the spread, then move. Bossing: maintain Essence Drain uptime as the repeating DoT; the totem can help but on a moving boss you must re-apply it yourself.

Exact support links and gem levels are pending PC verification.

Contagion
Spread enabler; marks enemies as contagious so Essence Drain propagates.

Why: It is the prerequisite for pack clear: without Contagion on the targets, Essence Drain does not spread. Cast it before Essence Drain.

When to replace: Keep in the mapping toolkit. On a single isolated boss it has little use (nothing to spread to); some variants drop it for bosses.

Mapping vs Bossing: Mapping: cast first into the pack center to enable spread. Bossing: usually skipped on a lone boss unless adds are present.

Spread condition and range are pending PC verification.

Auxiliary and support skills

Dark Effigy
Totem/support that auto-casts Essence Drain (and Despair) to maintain the DoT hands-free.

Why: It maintains ED/Despair uptime while you reposition, reducing manual refresh burden.

When to replace: Keep for bossing and dense mapping; on a fast-moving boss you must still manually re-apply ED because the totem may miss.

Mapping vs Bossing: Mapping: optional, plant on a cluster. Bossing: plant at fight open, keep it alive and repositioned.

Moving-boss uptime is the known weak point; exact contribution pending PC verification.

Despair
Curse that lowers the target's chaos resistance, amplifying the DoT.

Why: It is the curse that directly raises ED damage on the cursed target; apply it before committing the DoT.

When to replace: Keep; it is the single-target amplifier, not a damage competitor.

Mapping vs Bossing: Mapping: optional on rares that survive. Bossing: apply first at fight open, then maintain uptime.

Curse effect / gem level pending PC verification.

Sigil of Power
Variant-dependent buff area that adds damage or defense.

Why: Some variants use it as a damage/defense amplifier; treat it as optional until the chosen guide verifies it.

When to replace: Variant choice; keep only if your selected planner includes it.

Mapping vs Bossing: Mapping: optional. Bossing: optional buff before the maintenance loop.

Exact role pending PC verification.

Entangle
Variant-dependent root/control that can simplify targeting.

Why: Community discussion treats it as a quality-of-life alternative that removes the need to aim ED precisely. Not a damage competitor.

When to replace: Variant choice; some players prefer it over strict two-step targeting.

Mapping vs Bossing: Mapping: optional control. Bossing: generally not part of the boss loop.

Role as alternative pending PC verification.

Bonestorm
Variant-dependent AoE used for dense packs or as a boss tool in some guides.

Why: Some guides use it for extra pressure on dense packs or as a single-target option. Verify against your selected variant.

When to replace: Variant choice; not core to the ED + Contagion loop.

Mapping vs Bossing: Mapping: optional on dense packs. Bossing: optional in some single-target variants.

Exact role pending PC verification.

Ascendancy

  1. Provisional order

Follow the selected current guide, then confirm every node in the 0.5.4 client before publication.

Passive Tree

  1. Campaign

Take only nodes that support the current leveling skill and defensive requirements.

  2. Early maps

Move to the selected build variant; do not combine incompatible planner snapshots.

Gear

Weapon

Required

  1. Chaos / damage-over-time scaling on the base — Directly scales the persistent ED package.

Recommended

  1. Skill / gem level to relevant chaos skills — Raises the base DoT.

Optional

  1. Cast speed — Improves refresh cadence, not the damage floor.

Luxury

  1. Low-Life enabling affixes — Only relevant on the Low-Life variant.
  • Levels to relevant chaos or spell skills
  • Chaos or damage-over-time scaling

Validate whether wand, sceptre or focus is used by the selected route.

Focus or shield

Required

  1. Energy Shield — Primary defensive layer while kiting.

Recommended

  1. Defensive suffixes (resistances, life regen) — Completes the defense shell.

Optional

  1. Mana reservation / cost modifiers — Helps run auras or curses.

Luxury

  1. Low-Life specific focus mods — Variant-gated.
  • Energy Shield
  • Defensive suffixes

Do not copy a Low-Life focus into the Full-Life stage.

Armour and jewellery

Required

  1. Resistances and life/ES — No DPS compensates for dying in maps.

Recommended

  1. Attributes to equip gems — A gem you cannot socket is worthless.

Optional

  1. Movement speed on boots — Helps reposition while the DoT runs.

Luxury

  1. Explicit chaos DoT affixes — Only after defenses are solved.
  • Energy Shield, resistances and attributes
  • Cost or mana support when needed

Market prices are intentionally omitted.

Stat Priority

  1. Skill levelsDirectly support the main damage-over-time package.
  2. Chaos and DoT scalingScale the persistent damage rather than an unrelated hit.
  3. Cast speedImproves application feel but does not replace damage duration.
  4. Energy Shield and recoveryThe build still needs a complete defensive state while kiting.

Upgrade Priority

  1. Packs fail to spread / clear is slow

Symptom: Normal packs need many recasts and the spread never visibly starts.

    Check first:

    • Is Contagion actually applied before Essence Drain?
    • Are main gem levels and supports current for the tier?

Upgrade next: Fix cast order (Contagion → ED) and bring main gems to tier before buying offense.

  2. Dying in maps or boss arenas

Symptom: Frequent deaths in T15+ or boss fights.

    Check first:

    • Which resistances are uncapped?
    • Is life/ES below the content tier?
    • Are defensive layers active?

Upgrade next: Cap resistances and stabilize ES/life before any damage gear.

  3. Boss damage is low

Symptom: Boss health barely moves despite casting.

    Check first:

    • Is Despair active on the boss?
    • Is Dark Effigy alive and in range?
    • Is Essence Drain uptime actually high?

Upgrade next: Repair boss uptime (Despair → Effigy → ED), not the weapon.

  4. Mana runs out

Symptom: Mana empties during a single-target fight.

    Check first:

    • Relying only on flask?
    • Any cost reduction / leech / regen active?

Upgrade next: Fix mana sustain (cost reduction, regen, flask) before adding more buttons.

  5. Considering Low-Life

Symptom: Want more boss damage and eyeing Low-Life pieces.

    Check first:

    • Is Full-Life clear, boss uptime and defense stable?
    • Will Low-Life gear break resist caps or drop life/ES?

Upgrade next: Move to Low-Life only after the checklist passes; do not trade survival for a planner-only number.

Mapping

Cast Contagion into the center of a connected pack, then land Essence Drain on a target inside it — the ED debuff spreads to every nearby Contagion-affected enemy. Move immediately and watch whether the debuff propagates before spending another cast. Dark Effigy can be planted to auto-maintain ED/Despair on the cluster.

Tag a dense pack, confirm the spread starts, then move ahead. If propagation fails, check skill order (Contagion must be first), range, duration and whether the first target died with both effects.

  • Contagion → Essence Drain → move; optional Dark Effigy.
  • Fix cast order before blaming gear.
  • Reactive weapon upgrade when clear speed drops.

Bossing

Open the boss fight in this order: Despair first (the curse, -chaos resistance), then Dark Effigy (plant the totem so it auto-applies ED + Despair), then Essence Drain to lay the main DoT. Contagion is normally skipped on a lone boss because there is nothing to spread to.

Sustain with a loop: re-apply Essence Drain before it expires, keep the Dark Effigy totem alive and repositioned (it can miss a moving boss, so you must re-cast ED yourself), refresh Despair when it falls off, and keep moving between mechanics. The rhythm is refresh → reposition → refresh, not stationary casting.

  • Open: Despair → Dark Effigy → Essence Drain.
  • Sustain: refresh ED → keep Effigy → refresh Despair → move.
  • No Contagion needed on a single boss.

Defensive Layers

Full-Life and Low-Life use different defence and reservation assumptions. This guide treats Full-Life as the safer editorial default and leaves Low-Life under review.

  • Apply the two-skill spread setup to a pack, then move while the damage resolves.
  • Refresh Essence Drain and the chosen curse before their coverage expires.
  • Against bosses, add only the auxiliary skills verified for the selected variant; do not merge every guide's buttons.

Troubleshooting

Contagion does not spread

  • Confirm both effects are on the dying target.
  • Check the current spread condition and range in game.

Boss damage is low

  • Measure uptime instead of tooltip alone.
  • Confirm curse, Effigy and auxiliary skills are actually active.

Mana runs out

  • Reduce unnecessary repeated casts.
  • Check flask, cost and regeneration before adding more buttons.

Targeting and damage-over-time answers

Why does one pack disappear and the next barely moves?

The successful pack likely received Contagion and Essence Drain on the same connected group. In the failed pack, ED may have hit outside the Contagion set or the monsters were too separated to propagate.

  • Aim Contagion at the pack center.
  • Wait long enough to observe the first spread.
  • Use terrain to group monsters before recasting.

Should I use Entangle instead?

Use it if you value simpler targeting. Community discussion treats it as a quality-of-life alternative, not proof that ED + Contagion is invalid. The trade is a different clear pattern and support package.

What if I want a more immediate caster?

The cold Chronomancer route has a more direct hit-and-freeze rhythm, but requires a staged gem swap and closer positioning.

What the community disagrees about

Anecdotes show viable approaches, not a guaranteed progression ceiling.

reddit · Editorial paraphrase

Players report that the pair can progress on several ascendancies and feels easy early, while one responder prefers Entangle because it removes the need to aim ED and manage Unearth spreading.

This explains why the build can be strong yet still feel awkward to a player who dislikes two-step targeting.

0.5 ED + Contagion experience thread

guide · Editorial paraphrase

The maintained guide uses Contagion then Essence Drain for packs, adds Despair only when required, and keeps Dark Effigy totems active for bosses while the player moves.

That sequence is used here as a rotation model, not copied as a claim that every listed item is mandatory.
