QUICK ANSWER
Quick answer
Why does my loop stall?
Your mana spent per cast exceeds what you recover between casts from regen, leech, on-kill, and flasks.
In boss fights without adds, on-kill and leech sources dry up, so the same setup that cleared maps runs out of mana.
Why won't my aura enable?
Spirit is a reserved pool, not spent mana. If your reserved Spirit exceeds your maximum, the persistent buff cannot activate.
Free Spirit from other reservations first, then re-enable the aura or support.
Fastest fix?
Record a 10-second cast loop: count casts, note mana spent versus recovered, and find where recovery fails.
Often the cheapest fix is removing a support that inflated the cost, not stacking more recovery.
OVERVIEW
Mana vs Spirit: two different pools
Mana and Spirit solve different problems and are easy to confuse. Mana is spent every time you cast a skill. Spirit is reserved by persistent buffs, auras, and some supports, and is unavailable while reserved.
- Mana: consumed per cast; recovered through regeneration, mana leech, on-kill mana gain, and flasks or charms.
- Spirit: a pool reserved by persistent effects; if reserved exceeds maximum, the effect will not turn on.
- A support can both raise a skill's mana cost and reserve Spirit for a persistent buff, hitting you twice.
- Treat them separately: fixing mana never fixes a Spirit overflow, and vice versa.

COST BREAKDOWN
Cost of each fix
Not every fix costs the same. Rank options from cheapest to most disruptive before you commit.
| 项目 | 成本 | 说明 | 货币 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Unsocket a cost-inflating support | Free | No refund needed; just remove the socket. Cheapest first step if a support raised mana cost or reserved Spirit you did not need. | - |
| Add a mana flask or charm | Low | A burst source on use. Cheap to obtain, but depends on charge gain and has cooldown. | - |
| Swap gear for -mana cost or +mana regen | Varies | Look for reduced mana cost or increased mana regeneration on rings, amulet, or body armour. Cost depends on whether you craft or trade. | currency |
| Respec into mana or Spirit nodes | Gold + refund points | If you must path to resource passives, use the refund NPC; this costs gold and reallocates points you may need elsewhere. | gold |
| Switch to a Life-cost or different skill | Build change | Moving cost from mana to Life changes which pool is pressured and is rarely the cheapest option. | - |
Start with the free or low-cost options. Removing a support or adding a flask often resolves the gap without a respec.
OVERVIEW
Why mapping and bossing differ
The same skill setup can feel perfect in maps and impossible in a boss arena. The difference is almost always your recovery sources, not your skill.
- Maps: steady kills feed on-kill mana and leech, so recovery looks unlimited.
- Bosses: long phases and no adds starve on-kill and leech, exposing a weak base regen.
- Test recovery in a sustained boss-like scenario, not just while clearing packs.
- If a fix only works while killing, it is not a boss-proof fix.
OVERVIEW
Solutions that actually work
Target the largest gap measured in your 10-second loop. Usually one change closes most of it.
- Remove or swap a support that inflated mana cost or reserved unneeded Spirit.
- Add a standing recovery source (mana regen or a flask/charm) that does not depend on kills.
- Free Spirit by trimming other persistent buffs before adding a new aura.
- For trigger-heavy setups, size recovery to the trigger rate, not just the main cast.
- Verify the pressured pool directly if your skill spends Life, Energy Shield, or Runic Ward.
OVERVIEW
Methods that do not fix it
Players often stack the wrong thing. Skip these and measure the gap first.
- Piling on more leech when the fight has no kills: leech needs damage dealt and kills to matter.
- Adding mana regen to fix an aura that will not enable: that is a Spirit problem, not mana.
- Assuming one universal mana threshold fits every build: recovery needs scale with your own cost and cast rate.
- Ignoring trigger cost: triggered skills still spend mana when they fire.

Community questions
Common resource-sustain questions from Reddit and video comments, with our read and a direct suggestion.
Fine in maps, dry in boss
Problem: the loop only fails during long boss phases.
Evidence: recovery leans on on-kill and leech that need steady kills.
Suggestion: add standing regen or a flask; do not rely on kill-based recovery.
Aura greyed out
Problem: a persistent buff will not turn on.
Evidence: reserved Spirit exceeds maximum Spirit.
Suggestion: free Spirit from other reservations, then re-enable.
Flask never enough
Problem: a mana flask cannot keep up.
Evidence: charge gain is too slow, or cost spikes from a support.
Suggestion: check charges and remove cost-inflating supports before stacking flasks.
Trigger eats mana
Problem: triggered skills drain mana fast.
Evidence: triggered skills cost mana on top of the trigger skill.
Suggestion: size recovery to the trigger rate, not just the main cast.

PoE 2 Mana and Spirit Sustain: Stop Running Out
A walkthrough of diagnosing mana and Spirit problems, separating spent mana from reserved Spirit, and fixing sustain without a full respec.
What to watch for: Measure a 10-second loop, free Spirit before adding auras, and remove cost-inflating supports before stacking recovery.
Open source ↗OVERVIEW
Troubleshooting
Separate the pools first. A mana fix never resolves a Spirit problem, and most 'out of mana' cases are really a missing standing recovery.
- Always dry: record a 10-second loop and remove the largest cost source first.
- Boss only: add standing regen or a flask; stop relying on on-kill or leech.
- Aura won't enable: sum Spirit reservations and trim until they fit.
- Trigger dropout: size recovery to trigger rate, not just the main cast.
- Wrong pool: confirm whether the skill spends mana, Life, ES, or Ward before fixing.
