QUICK ANSWER
Quick answer
Why won't my support socket into the skill?
A support can only be slotted if its allowed tags overlap at least one of the skill's tags. If the tags do not match, the game refuses the socket.
It also fails if the skill gem has no free support socket, or if you do not meet the support's attribute or weapon requirement.
It socketed but the skill didn't change. Why?
The tags overlapped enough to allow the socket, but the support's specific effect does not apply to how your skill actually deals damage or behaves.
Some supports only affect a keyword your skill lacks, or only modify linked supports rather than the skill itself. Open the skill tooltip to see the listed interactions.
How do I confirm compatibility myself?
Hover the support gem: the tooltip lists the tags it applies to and shows incompatible skills as greyed out.
After socketing, compare the skill's tooltip DPS and modifiers with and without the support to confirm the effect landed.
OVERVIEW
Skill tags vs support tags
Every skill gem carries tags such as Attack, Spell, Projectile, Melee, Minion, Duration, or Area. Every support gem lists the tags it is allowed to modify. Compatibility is decided by this overlap, not by the support's name or icon.
- A support that requires Projectile does nothing on a melee or self-cast spell skill because that skill has no Projectile tag.
- A support that requires Attack will not apply to a Spell skill, even if both deal damage.
- Some supports are broad (apply to most Attacks or most Skills), while others are narrow (only Projectiles, only Minions, only Triggered skills).
- The gem tooltip is the source of truth: it shows exactly which tags a support targets and greys out skills it cannot modify.
OVERVIEW
How support sockets grow
A skill gem does not start with every support slot open. Support sockets are unlocked as the skill gem gains experience and levels up through combat. Early on a skill may only accept one or two supports; it gains more sockets at higher gem levels.
- If a support 'will not fit', the skill may simply have no free socket yet. Level the gem and reopen the socket panel.
- Higher-tier Uncut Gems can produce stronger support variants, but the number of sockets is governed by the skill gem, not the support.
- Check the skill gem's own panel to see how many support slots are currently available versus how many it will unlock.
COMPAT CHECK
Compatibility diagnostic
Pick the situation that matches yours. We explain the most likely tag, socket, attribute, weapon, or duplicate cause, and what to check in the tooltip.
OVERVIEW
Attribute, weapon, and duplicate limits
Beyond tags, three limits decide whether a support actually contributes: attribute gates, weapon gates, and the no-duplicate rule.
- Attribute gate: supports that require Strength, Dexterity, or Intelligence will not function unless your character meets the threshold.
- Weapon gate: certain supports only work while wielding the weapon class they specify (for example bow, crossbow, or a melee weapon).
- No duplicate: the same support cannot be stacked on one skill; a second copy is wasted.
- If a support sockets but feels inert, one of these three silent gates is usually the reason rather than a bug.
OVERVIEW
Triggered skills, persistent buffs, and Spirit
Two special cases trip up support compatibility: triggered skills and persistent buffs (auras and similar effects that reserve Spirit).
- Triggered skills: a support that triggers a skill fires the skill socketed alongside it, governed by trigger rules and cooldowns rather than manual casting.
- Persistent buffs: some supports grant auras or persistent effects that reserve a portion of your Spirit; if you lack the Spirit, the effect cannot activate.
- Spirit reservation is separate from mana: a support can be fully compatible by tags yet still fail to turn on because your Spirit is already reserved elsewhere.
- Free Spirit first (unsocket or lower other reservations), then re-check whether the persistent support activates.
OVERVIEW
Worked example
A concrete case shows how the same support behaves differently across skills purely because of tags.
- Example: a support that requires Projectile sockets cleanly into a projectile skill and raises its damage.
- The same support refuses to socket into a self-cast spell skill because that skill has no Projectile tag.
- A broader support that targets Attacks fits both a melee attack and a projectile attack, but not a spell.
- Lesson: read the tags, not the icon. The tooltip's greyed-out list is the final answer.
OVERVIEW
Methods that do not fix it
Players often try workarounds that cannot change compatibility. Skip these and go straight to the tag check.
- Reinstalling or re-logging does not change tag matching; the socket decision is deterministic from tags and requirements.
- Cutting a higher-tier support of the same kind still will not fit a skill whose tags it does not target.
- Adding the support to a different skill on your bar will not retroactively buff the skill you actually wanted.
- More gem levels on the support alone will not bypass a missing tag, attribute, or weapon match.
CARD GRID
Community questions
Common support-compatibility questions from Reddit and video comments, with our read and a direct suggestion.
Support greys out my skill
Problem: the support cannot be placed into the skill at all.
Evidence: the skill's tags do not overlap the support's allowed tags.
Suggestion: check the tooltip's greyed list and pick a support whose tags match your skill.
Socketed but DPS unchanged
Problem: the support fits but the tooltip shows no change.
Evidence: one tag overlapped enough to allow the socket, but the bonus targets a keyword the skill lacks.
Suggestion: compare the skill tooltip with and without the support; swap to a support whose effect clearly applies.
Aura support won't turn on
Problem: a persistent buff support does nothing.
Evidence: it reserves Spirit you have already spent on other auras or reservations.
Suggestion: free Spirit by lowering other reservations, then re-check activation.
Same support twice
Problem: a second copy appears to do nothing.
Evidence: duplicate supports on one skill are blocked or provide no stacking benefit.
Suggestion: use a different support that adds a new effect instead of repeating one.

PoE 2 Support Gems Explained: Tags, Sockets and Compatibility
A walkthrough of how support gems interact with skill tags, how sockets unlock, and how to read the tooltip before socketing.
What to watch for: Match support tags to skill tags, watch your free sockets and Spirit, and verify the effect in the tooltip before committing.

Troubleshooting
Most 'support not working' reports are tag or requirement mismatches, not bugs. Read the symptom, then check the tags.
- Cannot socket: open the support tooltip and read the greyed-out incompatible skills list.
- No effect after socketing: compare the skill tooltip with and without the support to confirm the bonus applied.
- Buffs the wrong skill: move the support into the skill you actually want buffed.
- Aura will not activate: free Spirit from other reservations first.
- Suspected bug: capture the skill tags, support tags, and your attributes, then compare against the tooltip before reporting.
