QUICK ANSWER
Quick answer
It is not a replacement for Vaal Orb; Vaal Orb corrupts an uncorrupted item first.
Only gamble an item you can afford to lose.
Use it on a corrupted item where a possible improvement is worth the destroy risk.
Hold it unless you have a corrupted item you are willing to lose.
Do not use on a corrupted item you cannot replace.

EFFECT
Vaal Orb vs Architect's Orb
Vaal Orb corrupts an item that is not yet corrupted, applying a corruption outcome and locking further normal currency use.
Architect's Orb is the follow-up step: it acts only on an already-corrupted item and can push that corruption further, with a chance to improve or destroy the item. The two are sequential, not interchangeable.
- Vaal Orb: uncorrupted -> corrupted.
- Architect's Orb: corrupted -> modified or destroyed.
VALID TARGET MATRIX
Valid targets
Architect's Orb requires the item to already be corrupted. Uncourrupted items are invalid.
| Target | Can be used | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Corrupted equipment | Yes | Primary target. |
| Corrupted unique | Check | Confirm on current client. |
| Uncorrupted item | No | Corrupt with Vaal Orb first. |
| Unidentified item | No | Identify before use. |

| Scenario | Gain | Loss | Risk | Recommendation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Gambling your best corrupted item | Possible big upgrade | Lose the item entirely | High | Only with a backup. |

| Using before other crafts finish | None | Wasted previous work if destroyed | Medium | Finalize other crafting first. |
BUILD USAGE
Which targets are worth it
Architect's Orb is worth considering only when the upside matters more than the replacement cost.
Spare corrupted rares
Cheap to gamble; a good roll helps, a loss costs little.
High-value uniques
Only if you have a duplicate and the special outcome is desirable.
Solo best-in-slot
Avoid; the destroy risk is too high without a backup.
OVERVIEW
Craft order
The recommended order is: finish quality, sockets, and normal crafts; apply Vaal Orb to corrupt the item; then, only as a final gamble, use Architect's Orb.
Using Architect's Orb before corruption is impossible, and using it before other crafts are done risks destroying work you cannot redo.
- Normal crafts -> Vaal Orb (corrupt) -> Architect's Orb (final gamble).
- Never use Architect's Orb as an early step.
