Barrage Guide — Repeats, Frenzy Charges, Cooldown and Valid Skills

Barrage is a Spell Buff, not a Bow Attack: casting it empowers your next use of a repeatable Bow or Spear attack so that attack fires multiple repeats. Base repeats scale with Frenzy Charges, each repeat deals reduced damage, and the empowered attack's Attack Time becomes Barrage's cooldown. This guide explains why Barrage is a buff, which skills can repeat, the correct Ice-Tipped Arrows → Barrage → Twister order, the Frenzy Charge cost, the cooldown cap, and the mapping / bossing rotations used by Spirit Walker, Gemling and Ritualist builds.

Quick Answer: Barrage Empowers Your Next Repeatable Attack

Barrage is a Spell Buff, not a Bow Attack you fire. When you cast it, it empowers the next eligible Bow or Spear attack you use, causing that attack to repeat multiple times in a single use.

The repeats are not free: you get a base number of repeats plus one per Frenzy Charge spent on cast, each repeat deals reduced damage, and the empowered attack's own Attack Time becomes Barrage's cooldown. Treat it as a burst multiplier you pre-load before a big hit, not a spammable button.

Key Stats and Acquisition

Category
Spell · Buff · Duration
Tagged spell, buff and duration; it modifies your next attack rather than dealing damage directly.
Weapon requirement
Bow or Spear
Only repeatable Bow / Spear attacks can be empowered; crossbow and caster skills are not valid targets.
Cost
Mana (per cast)
Confirm the current client mana cost before publishing numbers.
Cooldown
Set by the empowered attack's Attack Time
The faster the empowered skill, the shorter the cooldown, up to a hard cap.
Buff duration
Until consumed or expired
The empowerment lingers briefly; if you do not use a valid attack in time it is wasted.

Requirements and Valid Targets

Barrage needs a Bow or Spear equipped and a repeatable attack on that weapon to empower. The attack must be the kind that can naturally repeat (it has an internal repeat property); a single-hit attack does not gain repeats from Barrage.

Because the buff only attaches to a valid skill, the most common 'nothing happened' report is using Barrage then firing a skill that is not repeatable, or swapping to a weapon set that does not carry the intended attack.

Crossbow and caster skills cannot be empowered by Barrage.
Skill
Must be a repeatable attack
If the skill cannot repeat on its own, Barrage adds nothing.

Cast Barrage first, then immediately use the target attack.

Repeat and Cooldown Mechanics

Barrage grants a base number of repeats on the empowered attack and adds one extra repeat for each Frenzy Charge consumed when Barrage is cast. The exact base repeats and the per-charge bonus should be confirmed against the current 0.5.4 client before relying on a specific number.

Each repeat deals reduced damage compared with the primary hit. The skill is a burst tool, not a dps-over-time tool: you trade clean single-target uptime for a short volley of weaker hits.

Frenzy Charges are spent the moment Barrage is cast, not when the empowered attack fires. That means you must already have the charges banked before you cast Barrage; spending them afterwards does not increase the repeats.

  • Base repeats are fixed; extra repeats come from Frenzy Charges on cast.
  • Every repeat hits for a reduced damage multiplier.
  • Charges are consumed at cast time, so pre-bank them.
  • The empowered attack's Attack Time becomes the Barrage cooldown.

Frenzy Charge Cost and Sources

Barrage consumes Frenzy Charges on cast to add repeats. The more charges you hold, the bigger the volley — but those charges are gone afterward, so you need a way to refill them for the next burst.

In practice this pairs with a Frenzy Charge generator such as Combat Frenzy (freeze / electrocute / pin) or charge-on-kill passives. Without a sustain source, you can only Barrage once before running dry.

Consumption
On Barrage cast
Charges are spent when you cast Barrage, not when the attack lands.
Sources
Combat Frenzy, kills, passives
A sustain source is required for repeat bursts.
Empty charges
Base repeats only
With no charges you still get the base volley, just no per-charge bonus.

Attack Time Drives the Cooldown

Barrage's cooldown is derived from the Attack Time of the attack it empowered. A fast attack (low Attack Time) yields a short cooldown; a slow, heavy attack yields a long one. This is why slow, hard-hitting skills feel punishing to Barrage — you wait out a long cooldown for one volley.

The cooldown has a hard cap, so even the slowest empowered attack will not lock Barrage away forever. Still, picking a reasonably fast repeatable attack is the main lever for Barrage uptime.

Reduced repeat damage plus a cooldown gated by Attack Time means Barrage rewards setup: bank charges, pick a fast repeatable skill, and fire during a damage window rather than on cooldown.

Skill Interactions

Twister and Ice Shot are common repeatable targets that benefit from Barrage's volley. Spear attacks with a natural repeat also qualify, making Barrage attractive on Spear builds that already stack Frenzy.

Skills that cannot repeat (most crossbow and caster skills) gain nothing, and channeled or use-based skills may behave unexpectedly — confirm on the current client which of your slotted attacks actually become repeatable.

Twister
Valid repeatable target
Pairs well in the Ice-Tipped Arrows → Barrage → Twister loop.
Ice Shot
Valid repeatable target
A fast Ice Shot keeps the Barrage cooldown short.
Crossbow / caster
Not valid
Barrage cannot empower non-Bow / non-Spear attacks.

Support Compatibility

Supports that extend duration keep the empowerment available longer so you do not waste it between casts. Cooldown supports shorten the recovery if the empowered attack is slow. Charge-based supports interact with the Frenzy economy Barrage depends on.

  2. Empower + castIce-Tipped Arrows, then Barrage, then fireScreen-clearing volley on the pack.
  3. RecoverRefill charges before the next packBarrage stays available without long downtime.

Bossing Rotation

  1. Pre-chargePin / freeze adds or the boss if possibleEnough Frenzy Charges for a large volley.
  2. OpenBarrage into the empowered attack during a damage windowOne big repeat burst on the boss.
  3. SustainKeep Combat Frenzy proccing between windowsCharges refill for the next opening rather than going dry.

Where It Is Used

Spirit Walker (Twister) builds use Barrage to multiply Twister repeats during a pinned opening. Gemling Legionnaire variants lean on the Frenzy economy to keep the volley going, and Ritualist bow builds use a fast Ice Shot to keep the cooldown short.

In every case the build already runs a repeatable Bow/Spear attack and a Frenzy sustain; Barrage is the burst amplifier on top of that base.

  • Spirit Walker: Barrage multiplies Twister repeats on pinned targets.
  • Gemling Legionnaire: Frenzy sustain keeps the volley repeating.
  • Ritualist: fast bow attacks keep the Barrage cooldown low.

Troubleshooting

  1. No repeats happenThe attack you used is not repeatable or is on the wrong weapon setUse a repeatable Bow/Spear attack on the set that holds it, right after casting Barrage.
  2. Cooldown too longThe empowered attack has a high Attack TimeSwitch to a faster repeatable attack or use a cooldown support.
  3. No charges for bonus repeatsCharges were empty at cast timeBank Frenzy Charges (Combat Frenzy / kills) before casting Barrage.

Community Evidence

Recurring community claims of 'infinite Barrage' usually come from clips where charges are constantly refilled by a strong Frenzy generator. On the current client the repeats are still gated by charge count and by the empowered attack's Attack Time, so the loop is sustainable only with a real sustain source.

The most reported confusion is the cooldown: players expect a fixed short timer and instead get a long one because they empowered a slow attack. Picking a fast repeatable skill resolves most of it.
