Contagion Skill Guide — Chaos Spread, Debuff Propagation and Why It Won't Spread

Contagion is a chaos spell: it applies a chaos DoT to itself, and on target death (or pulse) spreads all chaos Debuffs carried (including Essence Drain) to nearby enemies. This guide explains its self-damage vs spread value, which Debuffs it spreads, why Quality adds initial targets, and a troubleshooting checklist for 'why it won't spread'.

Overview: What Contagion Does

Contagion is a chaos spell, but its real value is not its own damage — it is the 'spread': after you apply Contagion to a target, on that target's death (or at a pulse timing) it propagates all chaos Debuffs carried on its body — especially Essence Drain's DoT — to nearby enemies. In other words, it is the 'amplifier' of ED.

Because its role is to spread, the chaos DoT Contagion itself deals becomes unimportant late game; its core function is to 'lay Essence Drain's Debuff across the whole screen'. Understanding this keeps you from meaninglessly leveling Contagion itself.

It has strong synergy with Essence Drain, but the search intent is independent: players often search 'why won't Contagion spread', 'what does Quality add', 'how does it interact with curses / corpses' — these are what this guide directly answers.

  • Essence: chaos spell + spread mechanic (propagates carried chaos Debuffs to nearby enemies).
  • Its own damage is unimportant late; core function is laying out ED's Debuff.
  • Strong synergy with Essence Drain, but search intent and questions are independent.
  • Typical carrier: Lich / various caster league-start (ED+Con).

Core Mechanics: What It Spreads, When, and Damage Growth

What it spreads: Contagion propagates the chaos Debuffs carried on the target (including Essence Drain's DoT) and some curses / chaos debuffs to nearby enemies on the target's death or pulse. It 'carries' Debuffs that are already applied, rather than manufacturing a fresh, independent damage instance — so you must already have a Debuff like ED on the target before Contagion has anything to spread.

When it spreads: the common trigger is 'target death' or 'pulse timing' (confirm with the current client). This means when you clear trash, you apply ED+Con to a pack, and as they die the Debuffs chain to the next pack, forming a snowballing clear.

Damage growth and caps: each spread copies the existing Debuff to a new target, theoretically covering a huge number of enemies quickly; but a single Debuff's per-second damage does NOT double from spreading — spreading changes 'coverage count', not 'single-target damage'. Because boss has no 'death spread' carrier, Contagion contributes almost nothing on single-target.

Duration refresh: newly spread targets receive a Debuff within its Duration; understanding the Duration refresh rules keeps the spread chain alive. Quality instead increases the 'initial target count' (covering more starting targets per cast), rather than raising single-target damage.

  • It spreads already-applied chaos Debuffs (like ED's DoT), not fresh damage.
  • Common trigger: target death / pulse; clear via chained death spread.
  • Spread changes coverage count, not per-second single-target damage.
  • Quality adds initial targets; Duration decides whether the spread chain sustains.

Key Properties and Acquisition

Skill type
Active Spell (Chaos)
Tagged spell, chaos, dot, aoe, spread, duration.
Weapon requirement
Staff / Wand + Focus
As a spell, usually paired with +spell level / +chaos damage / +cast speed.
Acquisition
Uncut Skill Gem
Unlockable very early in the campaign (usable from ~level 1), the spread base of the ED+Con combo.
Mana cost
Scales with level and combo
As a high-frequency coverage skill, mana pressure comes from the overall loop, not a single cast.
Quality
+1 initial target (approx.)
Quality increases the initial target count per cast, key to laying out the spread chain.

Recommended Support Gems

Unleash
Core
Stores multiple releases per cast, quickly laying Contagion onto more targets.
Core support for clear coverage.
Magnified Area
Core
Widens the radius of the spread trigger, letting the chain reach farther.
Clear value clearly higher than single-target.
Deadly Ailments
Situational
If you want Contagion's own DoT to also contribute damage, amplify it; but its own damage is unimportant late.
Main value is in overall chaos DoT scaling.
Swift Affliction
Situational
Speeds up DoT resolution, indirectly improving spread Debuff efficiency.
More commonly used on ED links than Contagion itself.
Arcane Tempo
Situational
Provides cast speed, improving coverage frequency.
Both clear and overall loop benefit.
Energy Retention
Optional
Lowers mana cost, easing high-frequency coverage pressure.
Prolonged Duration
Optional
Extends Debuff duration, making the spread chain less prone to breaking.
Pairs more stably with Duration refresh logic.
Considered Casting
Optional
If the same link carries a curse, amplifies curse effect.
Only meaningful in curse-integrated links.

Role and Differences Across Builds

Lich: Contagion is the spread engine of the ED+Con clear combo. It chains ED's Debuff across dying packs, letting the Lich clear a whole screen with minimal single-target manipulation. Late game you stop investing in its own damage entirely; all its value comes from 'laying out ED'.

Generic caster league-start: in the campaign, Contagion appears almost bonded with ED — the smoothest caster league-start clear combo; Contagion first then ED, or ED first then Contagion, both form a spread chain.

Interaction with curses / corpses: Contagion mainly spreads 'chaos Debuffs', which is a different system from curses like Despair and from corpse mechanics — do not mistake 'the curse didn't spread' as a Contagion problem. Corpse interactions (like Unearth) are an extra tool, not a required Contagion prerequisite.

  • Lich: Contagion is ED's spread engine; own damage not invested late.
  • League-start: bonded with ED, forming chained death spread.
  • Curses / corpses are different systems; don't blame Contagion for 'curse not spread'.

Common Mistakes: Why It Won't Spread

Target didn't die: the classic spread trigger is target death (or pulse). If you just apply the Debuff without killing, there is no chained spread. First ensure you have enough kill speed (ED's DoT poisons the enemy).

Didn't hit the same target / Debuff expired: spread requires the target to actually carry a spreadable chaos Debuff and still be within Duration. If ED's Debuff already expired, Contagion has nothing to spread.

Spread range insufficient: not enough Magnified Area, or blocked by walls / terrain, will break the chain midway. Open terrain + sufficient range is what makes it roll.

Leveling Contagion late: Contagion's own damage is unimportant late; investing resources into ED or Quality (initial targets) is more cost-effective.

Expecting it to help on boss: boss has no 'death spread' carrier, so Contagion contributes almost nothing on single-target. Hand single-target to ED + Dark Effigy / Despair.

  • Problem: won't spread. Direct answer: needs target death/pulse trigger; kill first.
  • Problem: spread breaks midway. Direct answer: Debuff expired or range blocked; add range and duration.
  • Problem: low damage. Direct answer: don't level Contagion late; invest in ED / Quality.
  • Problem: useless on boss. Direct answer: single-target relies on ED + amp; Contagion isn't for single-target.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which Debuffs does Contagion spread?

It spreads the chaos Debuffs carried on the target (including Essence Drain's DoT) and some chaos debuffs to nearby enemies on death / pulse.

It does not manufacture fresh damage itself; it only 'carries' already-applied Debuffs.

Why did I cast Contagion but it won't spread?

The classic trigger is target death / pulse; without a kill, there is no chained spread. First ensure kill speed.

It could also be the target's Debuff expired, or blocked by terrain / range. Troubleshoot item by item.

What does Quality improve?

Quality increases the initial target count per cast, making the spread chain easier to lay out.

It does not directly raise single-target damage, so its value shows in clear coverage.

Should I keep leveling Contagion late?

No. Late game its core function is laying out ED; its own damage is no longer important.

Resources should shift to ED / curse amp / Quality (initial targets).
