Overview: What Essence Drain Does
Essence Drain is a chaos spell: you fire a projectile that, on hit, applies a 'chaos damage-over-time (DoT)' Debuff to the target. The most misunderstood part is treating 'the projectile hit' as the main damage — the projectile hit is tiny; the real health drain is the persistent chaos DoT it applies.
That is why Spell Damage works on it: the DoT's per-second damage is determined by spell level, Spell Damage, chaos damage, DoT multipliers and duration — not by 'how hard the projectile hit'. Understand this to stack attributes correctly.
Essence Drain is almost never separated from Contagion — Contagion spreads that Debuff (along with other chaos Debuffs) to nearby enemies. Together ED+Con is the classic Lich and caster league-start clear combo.
- Essence: chaos spell projectile + applied chaos DoT Debuff (core damage segment).
- Spell Damage scales the Debuff DoT, not the projectile hit.
- Weak alone; must pair with Contagion to spread.
- Typical carrier: Lich / various caster league-start (ED+Con).
Core Mechanics: Projectile Hit vs Debuff DoT, Spell Damage Scaling
Two damage segments: the projectile (Hit) is a one-time small hit that only 'applies the Debuff'; the Debuff (DoT) is non-hitting persistent damage resolved per second and is the true core. So when evaluating ED strength, look at the Debuff's per-second damage and duration, not the projectile panel.
Why Spell Damage scales the DoT: the chaos DoT's per-second damage is scaled by 'chaos damage', 'Spell Damage', 'DoT multipliers' (e.g. faster resolution from Swift Affliction). So stacking Spell Damage / chaos damage / spell level is far more effective than hit-related mods.
Chain tradeoff: Chain makes the projectile ricochet between enemies, faster applying the Debuff to more targets — extremely valuable for clear. But it does not increase the DoT's per-second damage, only coverage. On boss single-target Chain's value drops; swap for concentration.
Duration and Quality: longer duration means the Debuff ticks longer, higher total damage, but requires more frequent reapplication to maintain coverage. Quality usually improves some Debuff efficiency (follow the current client).
- Projectile only applies the Debuff; DoT is the core per-second damage.
- Stack Spell Damage / chaos damage / spell level, better than hit mods.
- Chain improves coverage but not DoT per-second; drop on boss.
- Longer Duration = higher total, but reapplication frequency must keep up.
Key Properties and Acquisition
- Skill type
- Active Spell (Chaos)
- Tagged spell, projectile, chaos, dot, duration.
- Weapon requirement
- Staff / Wand + Focus
- As a spell, usually paired with +spell level / +chaos damage / +cast speed.
- Acquisition
- Uncut Skill Gem
- Unlockable early in the campaign (usable from ~level 3), a common caster league-start core.
- Mana cost
- Scales with level and combo
- High-frequency reapplication is mana-heavy; mitigate with Zenith, mana regen or auras.
- Quality
- Debuff efficiency
- Quality usually improves some Debuff efficiency, strongly boosting sustained total damage.
Recommended Support Gems
- Swift Affliction
- Core
- Faster DoT resolution, raising per-second damage efficiency; an ED core support.
- Near-universal across ED variants.
- Deadly Ailments
- Core
- Boosts ailment/DoT damage, directly amplifying the chaos DoT.
- With Swift Affliction forms ED's standard core.
- Chain
- Situational
- Ricochets projectile between enemies, fast applying the Debuff to more; excellent for clear.
- Lower boss value; swap for concentration.
- Chaos Penetration
- Situational
- Strong later on high-chaos-resist maps/bosses.
- Lower early value than direct Spell Damage.
- Arcane Tempo
- Situational
- Cast speed, improving reapplication feel and coverage frequency.
- Benefits both clear and single-target.
- Energy Retention
- Situational
- Lowers mana cost, easing high-frequency reapplication pressure.
- Prioritise when mana is tight.
- Magnified Area
- Optional
- Widens projectile hit area, easier to apply to more at once.
- Best paired with Chain.
- Heightened Curse
- Optional
- If the same link carries a curse (e.g. Despair), amplifies curse effect.
- Only meaningful in curse-integrated links.
- Concentrated Effect
- Optional
- Smaller area for higher single hit;偏 single-target/boss.
- Sacrifices clear coverage; weigh it.
Role and Differences Across Builds
Lich: the canonical ED+Con carrier. Lich's Eternal Life (life to energy shield), Withering Presence (wither aura, resistance shred), paired with Dark Effigy (totem) and Despair (curse), Sigil of Power, forms a high-energy-shield, high-survival chaos DoT system. ED is the core sustained damage source.
Generic caster league-start: before specialised endgame skills, ED+Con is the smoothest caster league-start combo — low gear demand, wide coverage, sustained output.
Single-target difference: pure ED boss uptime needs 'periodic reapplication + Dark Effigy/Despair amp + Bonestorm/Entangle for single-target'. Just applying the ED Debuff without amplification makes the boss much slower than clear.
- Lich: ED core + Withering Presence + Dark Effigy + Despair.
- League-start: low gear demand, wide coverage, sustained.
- Boss: reapply + amp totem/curse + single-target filler; not just the Debuff.
Common Mistakes: Why the Panel Shows Damage but Can't Clear
Treating the projectile as core: only looking at the projectile's hit number, not realising the real damage is the DoT. Correct evaluation is the Debuff per-second damage and duration.
Not pairing Contagion: ED alone applies the Debuff one target at a time, clearing very slowly. You must cast Contagion to spread it (order depends on your loop, see FAQ).
Chain lowering hit mistakenly thought to lower DoT: Chain only changes coverage, not DoT per-second; keep Chain for clear, don't swap it for 'hit'.
Not reapplying on boss: the Debuff has duration; boss fights need periodic reapplication or coverage gaps collapse total damage. Dark Effigy (auto-sustain) helps but still maintain actively.
Mana stutter: high-frequency reapplication is mana-heavy; without Zenith / mana regen it breaks. Check supports and gear mana support.
- Problem: can't clear. Answer: core damage is the DoT, not projectile; pair Contagion to spread.
- Problem: does Chain lower damage? Answer: Chain only changes coverage, not DoT per-second.
- Problem: boss slower than clear. Answer: reapply + Dark Effigy/Despair amp.
- Problem: mana empty. Answer: add Zenith or mana regen.

Open source ↗Frequently Asked Questions
Who casts first, Essence Drain or Contagion?
Common loop is Contagion first (build spread base), then Essence Drain to apply the Debuff that Contagion spreads.
You can also ED the main target first, then Contagion to diffuse it. Key is both on field; fix the order by feel.
Why does tooltip damage differ from clear experience?
Tooltip mostly shows the projectile hit; the chaos DoT that drains health isn't reflected the same way in 'single hit'.
Look at Debuff per-second damage and duration, not the projectile panel.
How often to reapply on boss?
The Debuff has duration; boss fights need periodic reapplication to maintain coverage; exact interval follows the current client Debuff duration.
Dark Effigy totem auto-sustains; still actively reapply in amp windows.
Does Chain lower damage?
No. Chain only changes projectile coverage among enemies, not the chaos DoT per-second.
Keep Chain for clear; only its value drops on boss single-target.
