Quick Answer
Shockburst Rounds fires crossbow rounds that detonate a Pulse explosion of extra lightning damage whenever they hit a Shocked enemy. No Shock on the target means almost no payoff — the rounds just hit for their normal Projectile damage.
The Pulse is the entire point of the skill. It scales with the same lightning modifiers as the hit, so investment that raises lightning damage raises both the round and the Pulse.
Because it needs Shock, Shockburst Rounds is the boss half of a Lightning Crossbow plan: Galvanic Shards clears maps, then you apply Shock and swap to Shockburst Rounds for single-target. It is optional for pure mapping.
Quick Facts
- Category
- Crossbow Ammunition / Lightning
- Tagged attack, projectile, ammunition, lightning, shock.
- Core condition
- Target must be Shocked
- Pulses only fire on hits against a Shocked enemy; an un-Shocked target gets only the base round.
- Payoff
- Pulse explosion per Shocked hit
- Each connecting round on a Shocked enemy triggers one Pulse of extra lightning damage.
- Acquisition
- Uncut Skill Gem (Tier 5)
- Obtained from an Uncut Skill Gem; sockets into a crossbow skill slot.
- Best role
- Boss / single-target after Shock
- Weak without Shock; strong once the target carries the Shocked ailment.
Requirements and Activation
There is no special attribute gate beyond a normal crossbow skill, but the skill is useless without Shock on the target. You must supply Shock from somewhere: a Herald of Thunder aura, a Lightning skill that applies Shock, a Shock-support, or a Shock-from-gear setup.
Reload is the same fast single-round model as other current crossbow ammunition: fire, quick reload, repeat. Ammo must be loaded or the skill does nothing.
- Shock source
- Required (Herald / Lightning skill / Shock support)
- Without Shock the Pulse never fires.
- Ammo loaded
- Required
- Unloaded rounds mean no shot; keep the clip fed.
Ammunition and Reload
Shockburst Rounds consumes one round per shot and reloads quickly with no penalty, matching the current crossbow ammunition model. Sustained fire is smooth, but the skill's value is in each Shocked hit's Pulse, not in volume.
- Load and fireFire a Shockburst round at the target. If the target is Shocked, the hit triggers a Pulse explosion.
- ReloadThe single round reloads quickly and automatically.Next round is ready with no penalty delay.
Shock Payoff and Pulse Explosions
The Pulse is an extra lightning explosion that fires when a Shockburst round connects with a Shocked enemy. It is not a separate cast — it is bundled into the hit. Each Shocked hit produces one Pulse.
Pulse damage scales with lightning modifiers, so the same supports that raise the round's damage also raise the Pulse. Shock magnitude does not directly add more Pulses; it makes the Shock easier to apply and sustain, which keeps the payoff active.
A common misconception is that 'the boss has a lightning icon so it must be Shocked.' Lightning damage and Shock are different. The target must carry the Shocked ailment status (the blue crackle), not merely take lightning damage, for the Pulse to fire.
- Pulse fires per Shocked hit; it is part of the hit, not a separate cast.
- Pulse scales with lightning damage like the round itself.
- Shock magnitude helps uptime, not Pulse count.
- Lightning damage on the target is not the same as the Shocked ailment.
Hit Behaviour: Projectile vs Pulse
Two damage layers exist: the Projectile hit of the round itself, and the Pulse explosion on a Shocked target. Both are lightning and both scale together, but the Pulse is what makes the skill a boss tool.
Against a Shocked boss, each round delivers the hit plus the Pulse — roughly double the per-hit value. Against an un-Shocked target, only the hit lands, which is why the skill feels 'dead' without Shock.
Multiple projectiles (via support or skill setup) can each trigger their own Pulse on a Shocked boss, so multi-projectile investment helps single-target here, unlike Galvanic Shards where it mostly helps clear.
- Projectile hit
- Always present
- Base round damage; the floor of the skill.
- Pulse explosion
- Only on Shocked hits
- The payoff; doubles effective per-hit on a Shocked boss.
Skill Interactions
Herald of Thunder is the most reliable Shock source: it shocks enemies on kills and keeps Shock applied during clear, so swapping to Shockburst Rounds mid-fight usually finds a Shocked target.
Galvanic Shards pairs naturally: Galvanic clears and can apply Shock via supports, then you swap to Shockburst Rounds for the boss. Plasma Blast and Voltaic Grenade are alternative Lightning payoffs that occupy different slots.
Weapon-set swaps are where Shock often breaks: if your Shock source lives in Weapon Set 1 but you boss in Set 2 without it, the target loses Shock and Shockburst Rounds stops pulsing.
- Herald of Thunder: steady Shock uptime for the Pulse.
- Galvanic Shards: clear plus Shock setup, then swap.
- Weapon-set swap can drop Shock if the source is not in both sets.
Support Compatibility
Supports should raise lightning damage, Shock application, or single-target focus. Clear-only supports (Fork, wide Chain) are low priority here because the skill's job is the Shocked boss, not packs.
- Lightning Penetration
- Recommended
- Raises both the hit and the Pulse on the Shocked boss.
- Fork
- Situational (clear only)
- Spreads rounds but lowers boss focus; skip for pure bossing.
| Support | Mapping | Boss | Affects | Note |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Lightning Penetration | Medium | High | Lightning hit + Pulse | Core boss support |
| Added Lightning | Medium | High | Lightning hit + Pulse | Scales both layers |
| Fork | High | Low | Round spread | Hurts single-target focus |
| Concentrated Effect | Low | Medium | Pulse area | Only if Pulse area matters |
Support Loadouts
The boss loadout leans into lightning damage and Shock. The mapping loadout (if you use the skill for clear at all) can add light spread, but most players keep Shockburst Rounds purely as the boss skill.
- Boss loadoutSocket Lightning Penetration, Added Lightning, and a single-target damage support.Maximum Pulse damage on the Shocked boss.
- Keep Shock liveEnsure the Shock source (Herald or support) is active in the same weapon set.Every round pulses instead of falling flat.
Weapon Set Rules
Most Lightning Crossbow players put Galvanic Shards in Weapon Set 1 (clear) and Shockburst Rounds in Weapon Set 2 (boss). The critical rule: the Shock source must be present in the set you boss with, or Shock drops and the Pulse stops.
- Set 1 (clear)
- Galvanic Shards
- Mapping half of the plan.
- Set 2 (boss)
- Shockburst Rounds + Shock source
- Both the skill and Shock uptime must live here.
Mapping Usage
Shockburst Rounds is usually skipped during pure mapping — Galvanic Shards already clears faster. It is worth using in maps only when you want Pulse bursts on Shocked rares, or when Shock uptime is trivially high from a Herald.
- Optional map useIf a Herald keeps Shock up, fire Shockburst Rounds at Shocked rares.Pulse bursts clear tough rares quickly.
- Default map useOtherwise stay on Galvanic Shards for speed.Faster overall clear.
Bossing Rotation
Bossing is where Shockburst Rounds earns its slot. Keep Shock applied, then spam rounds so every hit pulses. Reapply Shock before the window ends to avoid dead rounds.
- Apply and hold ShockUse Herald of Thunder or a Shock support to keep the boss Shocked.Target carries the Shocked ailment continuously.
- Fire Shockburst RoundsSpam rounds; each Shocked hit pulses.Strong single-target damage via hit + Pulse.
- Refresh ShockReapply Shock before the ailment expires. No gap where rounds stop pulsing.
Build Usage
Lightning Crossbow Witchhunter: the canonical home. Galvanic Shards clears, Shockburst Rounds bosses, Herald of Thunder supplies Shock.
Invoker crossbow: Shockburst Rounds shows up in T18 Breach showcases where Shock uptime is high and the Pulse bursts delete bosses.
General crossbow: any build that already runs a Shock source can slot Shockburst Rounds as the single-target answer.
- Witchhunter Lightning Crossbow: clear + boss + Shock in one plan.
- Invoker crossbow: high-Shockuptime boss bursts.
- Any Shock-running crossbow: drop-in single-target skill.
Troubleshooting
No Pulse on the boss: the target is not actually Shocked. Direct answer: check for the Shocked ailment (blue crackle), not just lightning damage; apply Shock via Herald or support.
Shock expired mid-fight: your Shock source dropped or the window ended. Direct answer: reapply Shock before firing more rounds.
Ammo not loaded: the clip is empty. Direct answer: reload; an unloaded round means no shot and no Pulse.
Low boss damage after swapping: you swapped to Weapon Set 2 but left the Shock source in Set 1. Direct answer: put the Shock source in the boss set too.
- No PulseVerify the Shocked ailment is present, not just lightning damage.Apply Shock via Herald / support.
- Shock droppedRefresh Shock before the window ends.Pulses resume.
- Wrong setMove the Shock source into the boss weapon set.Shock stays live while bossing.
Community Evidence
The most common player report is 'my Shockburst Rounds does nothing' — almost always because the target is not Shocked (lightning damage mistaken for Shock).
Build authors consistently pair the skill with Herald of Thunder or a Shock support, confirming Shock uptime is the make-or-break factor.
Players note the tooltip shows only the Projectile layer, hiding the Pulse, which is why the skill looks weak until you see it hit a Shocked boss.
- Recurring issue: lightning damage mistaken for Shock.
- Consensus: pair with Herald of Thunder / Shock support.
- Tooltip hides the Pulse layer.
