Stormblast Bolts Guide — Charged Bolts, Detonators and Weapon Set Rules

Stormblast Bolts fires Charged Bolts that stick into the ground and enemies. They do almost no damage on their own — you must detonate them with a Detonator skill (Explosive Shot, Explosive Grenade, Voltaic Grenade, Oil Grenade, or a Ballista) to deal a big lightning burst. The classic Tactician plan preloads bolts, then detonates all of them at once on a boss.

Quick Answer

Stormblast Bolts shoots Charged Bolts that embed in the ground and enemies. The bolts themselves barely damage — the payoff is detonating them.

A Detonator skill is required: Explosive Shot, Explosive Grenade, Voltaic Grenade, Oil Grenade, or a Ballista (such as Mortar Cannon). When a Detonator hits near your bolts, they all explode for lightning damage.

The Tactician boss plan is: preload a stack of bolts where the boss will appear, drop your detonators, then fire more bolts so everything detonates at once for a huge burst. Without a Detonator the skill is nearly useless.

Quick Facts

Category
Crossbow / Deployed Bolts
Tagged attack, projectile, lightning, detonator.
Core loop
Place bolts, then detonate
Bolts do little alone; a Detonator skill triggers the explosion.
Detonators
Explosive Shot / Grenade / Voltaic / Oil / Ballista
Any skill with the Detonator tag sets the bolts off.
Acquisition
Uncut Skill Gem (Tier 8)
Obtained from an Uncut Skill Gem; sockets into a crossbow skill slot.
Best role
Boss burst / preloaded damage
Excels at one-shotting bosses with a stacked detonation; weak for clear alone.

Requirements

There is no special attribute gate, but you must run at least one Detonator skill alongside Stormblast Bolts, or the bolts never explode. Most players pair it with Explosive Shot or Explosive Grenade, or use a Ballista like Mortar Cannon.

Ammo works like other crossbow skills: one round loads, fires the bolt fan, reloads quickly.

Detonator skill
Required
Without it, bolts persist but never deal their burst.
Ammo loaded
Required
Unloaded means no bolts placed.

Charged Bolts

Each shot plants a set of Charged Bolts in the world. They are owned by you, not by the crossbow that placed them, which matters for weapon-set swaps (see below).

Bolts persist for a limited duration — long enough to preload a boss arena before the fight starts, then they expire if not detonated. You can place a stack of several bolts; Tactician builds commonly preload a dozen or more before detonating.

The bolt's own hit is minor. All the damage is in the detonation explosion triggered by a Detonator. So the skill is really a 'load then trigger' weapon, not a direct-damage skill.

  • Bolts are player-owned and persist for a limited time.
  • You can stack several bolts before detonating.
  • Real damage comes from the Detonator explosion, not the bolt hit.

Bolt Limits and Expiry

There is a cap on how many bolts can exist at once; once you hit it, older bolts stop being placed or expire to make room. Preloading far more than the cap is wasted.

Bolts that leave your view or sit too long expire on their own. In bossing you usually place them right before the detonation window so they are all live when you trigger.

Max bolts
Capped (preload a practical stack)
Over-preloading past the cap wastes bolts.
Expiry
Limited duration
Place bolts just before detonation for bossing.

Weapon Set Rules

Because bolts are owned by you (not by the set that placed them), you can place bolts in Weapon Set 1 and detonate them from Weapon Set 2. The key question players ask is which stats apply at detonation.

In client testing the detonation uses the Detonator skill's own modifiers and the stats of the weapon set that is active at the moment of detonation. So if you swap to a set with a stronger crossbow or more lightning scaling before triggering, the explosion benefits from that set.

Place in Set 1
Bolts persist after swap
Bolts are player-owned, not set-owned.
Detonate in Set 2
Uses active-set stats at trigger
Swap to the scaling set before detonating for max burst.

Hit Behaviour

The bolt placement hit is light. The detonation is a lightning area burst centred on the bolts. Multi-bolt detonations stack their explosions, which is why a preloaded stack deletes a boss.

Detonation area and damage scale with the Detonator skill and its supports, not with Stormblast Bolts' own supports alone. This is why the skill's supports are chosen for bolt placement utility (range, bolt count) while the damage comes from the Detonator.

Placement hit
Minor
Just plants the bolts.
Detonation burst
Major, scales with Detonator
The real damage; stack bolts for a bigger combined burst.

Support Compatibility

Supports for Stormblast Bolts should improve bolt placement (more bolts, range) rather than try to scale the detonation directly — the detonation scales off the Detonator. Quality is a known trap: adding Quality to Stormblast Bolts can shift its elemental balance and break Trinity-style equal-damage requirements in some builds, so many guides deliberately leave it unqualified.

Bolt count / range supports
Recommended
More bolts placed = bigger stacked detonation.
Quality
Often left off
Can break Trinity equal-damage balance in some builds.
Direct damage supports
Low priority
Detonation damage comes from the Detonator, not these.

Support Loadouts

Keep Stormblast Bolts' supports focused on placement. Put your damage scaling on the Detonator skill instead.

  1. Placement supportsSocket bolt-count and range supports on Stormblast Bolts.More bolts preloaded for a bigger burst.
  2. Damage on DetonatorSocket lightning and area supports on Explosive Shot / Grenade / Ballista. The detonation itself scales hard.
  3. Skip QualityLeave Stormblast Bolts unqualified if your build uses Trinity.Avoids breaking the equal-damage modifier.

Mapping Rotation

For clear, Stormblast Bolts is usually secondary to Galvanic Shards. You place a few bolts and detonate them with Explosive Shot as you move, or skip the skill entirely for speed.

  1. Place a few boltsFire Stormblast Bolts into a pack.Bolts embed in the group.
  2. DetonateHit with Explosive Shot / Grenade.Bolts explode for a clear burst.

Bossing Rotation

Bossing is the skill's home. Preload bolts where the boss will spawn, set your detonators, then trigger everything at once.

  1. Preload boltsFire 15-20 Stormblast Bolts at the boss spawn point before it appears.A live stack of bolts waits.
  2. Set detonatorsPlace Ballistas / Mortar Cannons or ready Explosive Shot.Detonation sources are in position.
  3. DetonateFire more bolts or trigger the detonators as the boss becomes targetable. All bolts explode together for a massive burst.

Build Usage

Tactician crossbow: the signature home. Galvanic Shards clears, Stormblast Bolts is preloaded and detonated on bosses for one-shot bursts, often with Mortar Cannon as the automated Detonator.

Gemling / generic crossbow: any build that runs a Detonator can use Stormblast Bolts as a boss burst, swapping to it for the preload-detonate play.

Grenade builds: Voltaic or Oil Grenade users already have a Detonator, so Stormblast Bolts slots in as bonus burst.

  • Tactician: Galvanic clear + Stormblast boss burst.
  • Any Detonator build: drop-in boss burst.
  • Grenade builds: natural fit with existing detonators.

Troubleshooting

Bolts do no damage: you have no Detonator skill. Direct answer: socket Explosive Shot / Grenade / Voltaic / Oil or a Ballista and hit near the bolts.

Bolts vanished before the boss: they expired. Direct answer: place them right before the detonation window, not minutes earlier.

Crossbow stuck / no bolts placed: you hit the bolt cap or ammo is empty. Direct answer: reload and don't over-preload past the cap.

Detonation feels weak: your Detonator lacks lightning/area scaling. Direct answer: move damage supports onto the Detonator skill.

  1. No DetonatorAdd a Detonator skill and hit near bolts.Bolts explode.
  2. Bolts expiredPreload closer to the trigger moment.Bolts are live when detonated.
  3. Weak burstScale the Detonator, not Stormblast Bolts.Bigger explosion.

Known Issues and Edge Cases

Voltaic Grenade used to be debated as a Detonator — some players reported it not triggering bolts on certain patches. On the current client it carries the Detonator tag and detonates bolts; if you see no explosion, confirm the grenade actually lands near the bolts.

Weapon-set swaps can drop your Shock or Detonator if those skills live only in the other set. Keep the Detonator and any Shock source present in the set you detonate with.

Do not confuse 'a skill explodes' with 'a skill is a Detonator'. Only skills with the Detonator tag set off Stormblast Bolts; a generic explosion does not count.

  • Voltaic Grenade: current client detonates; land it near bolts.
  • Keep Detonator + Shock in the active set.
  • Only Detonator-tagged skills trigger bolts.

Community Evidence

The Tactician Stormblast Bolts guide is one of the most-referenced endgame crossbow builds, with players reporting 30-stack detonations hitting for tens of millions on bosses.

Forum threads repeatedly ask 'why won't Voltaic Grenade detonate my bolts' — the answer is tag and placement, not a missing gem.

Players warn about the Quality trap: adding Quality to Stormblast Bolts can break Trinity in some builds, so many leave it unqualified.

  • Tactician preload-detonate is a proven boss tech.
  • Voltaic Grenade questions are about tag/placement.
  • Quality trap with Trinity is widely noted.
