Overview: What Twister Actually Does
Twister is a Spear attack: you throw a sustained spinning wind-blade projectile that flies along your aim direction and repeatedly hits enemies in its path for its duration. The base cast looks unremarkable; the real damage comes from two systems — stage stacking and elemental ground.
The core loop is: use Whirling Slash first to generate Whirlwind stages, then cast Twister to 'spend' them. Each stage consumed adds another set of blades and increases this cast's total damage. A Twister with no Whirlwind stages is just a multi-hit wind blade; a Twister stacked with stages becomes your main clear and boss damage.
This is why Twister almost never appears in a build on its own — it forms a chain with Whirling Slash, Barrage, Ice-Tipped Arrows and Elemental Whirlwind ground, most commonly on the Spirit Walker Spear ascendancy, but also usable on Deadeye or Amazon spear builds.
- Essence: Spear attack + sustained flying blade + extra blades per stage.
- Damage sources: number of Whirlwind stages spent, elemental ground, projectile-speed-as-damage.
- Weak alone, strong with Whirling Slash — the most misunderstood point.
- Common partners: Whirling Slash (stages), Barrage (boss burst), Ice-Tipped Arrows (cold convert), Elemental Whirlwind (ground).
Core Mechanics: Stages, Hit Limits and Elemental Ground
Whirlwind stages: Whirling Slash accumulates Whirlwind stages as it hits or moves (commonly described by the community and guides as up to 4 stages). Twister reads the current stage count when cast, adding a set of blades per stage and boosting total damage. Stages are cleared once spent, so the order is always 'stack stages, then Twister'.
Same-target hit limit: multiple blades flying at one target are subject to a hits/damage falloff limit (the exact cap shifts by client version). This means Twister is excellent at clearing dense packs but, against a single boss, stacking blade count yields diminishing returns — quality over quantity is the single-target lesson.
Elemental ground (Elemental Ground / Elemental Whirlwind): when Twister passes through or is placed on ignited, shocked, or chilled/frozen ground, Elemental Whirlwind grants the blades extra damage of that element. The Spirit Walker tech leans on The Taming ring to make Twister and Whirling Slash 'always treated as buffed by ignited/shocked/chilled ground', trivially gaining all three elements without manually laying ground.
Projectile Speed's special role: Spirit Walker's Primal Bounty provides large projectile speed, and the Projectile Acceleration support converts projectile speed into projectile damage. In that build, stacking projectile speed is almost stacking damage itself; other builds without that conversion should prioritise Duration, AoE and attack speed instead.
- More stages → more blades → higher total damage; stages clear after Twister spends them.
- Single boss is limited by the same-target hit cap; blade count has diminishing returns.
- Fire/electric/ice ground grants matching extra blade damage; The Taming can make it permanent.
- Primal Bounty + Projectile Acceleration turn projectile speed into real damage.
- The 0.5 lineage gem Olaf's Conviction grants extra skill uses, smoothing the Primal Bounty stacking feel.
Key Properties and Acquisition
- Skill type
- Active Attack (Spear)
- Tagged attack, aoe, projectile, duration, wind, spear.
- Weapon requirement
- Spear
- Requires a Spear equipped; in dual-wield setups Twister usually goes on the high-damage spear set.
- Acquisition
- Uncut Skill Gem
- Unlocked via Uncut Skill Gems obtained in the campaign; earlier unlock carries you through the whole walkthrough.
- Mana cost
- Scales with level
- High level and high frequency create noticeable mana pressure; mitigate via weapon sets, flasks or auras.
- Duration
- Medium
- Longer Duration lets the blade hit more times in multi-target scenes; a core clear investment.
- Quality
- Extra blades / projectile speed
- Quality's extra blades and projectile speed noticeably raise total damage after stages are stacked.
Recommended Support Gems
- Elemental Armament
- Core
- Provides several elemental bonuses and buffs; a core support for both physical and elemental Twister.
- In the Spirit Walker + The Taming setup it helps fully capitalise on elemental bonuses.
- Projectile Acceleration
- Core
- Converts projectile speed into projectile damage; near-mandatory in Primal Bounty speed-stacking builds.
- Lower value outside speed-conversion builds; swap for direct damage.
- Prolonged Duration
- Core
- Extends blade lifetime for more multi-target hits; the default clear pick.
- Lower boss value than clear, but still a stable investment.
- Retreat
- Situational
- Adds mobility and survivability for mapping and boss environments needing repositions.
- Replace with pure damage in pure stand-and-deliver scenes.
- Salvo
- Situational
- Adds launched blades, raising the post-stack total damage ceiling.
- At higher budget replace with Rakietta's Flow or Gokan's Resolve.
- Longshot
- Situational
- Boosts damage to distant targets, fitting the spear's ranged blade identity.
- Value drops in heavy melee range.
- Barrage
- Situational
- Focuses Twister's clear power onto a single boss; key to the full boss rotation.
- Not always on — used in boss burst windows.
- Magnified Area
- Optional
- Widens blade hit area for better clear coverage.
- Too much area can spread single-target focus; weigh it.
- Elemental Focus
- Optional
- Drops DOT in exchange for higher elemental hit damage; good for elemental versions.
- May not apply if you rely on DOT or specific ground mechanics.
- Fork
- Optional
- Makes blades fork after hits, improving dense-pack coverage.
- Lowers single-hit concentration; usually not for boss.
Role and Differences Across Builds
Spirit Walker (Spear): the canonical Twister carrier. The Taming grants permanent triple-element ground bonuses, Primal Bounty + Projectile Acceleration turn speed into damage, and Olaf's Conviction smooths stage stacking. Twister is the main damage; Whirling Slash stays low-level as a stage generator and reposition tool; Barrage is for boss bursts.
Deadeye / Amazon (Spear): these can also run Twister but it is rarely the sole core. They lean on high attack speed and crit, with Twister more often a clear supplement or part of a specific combo. Unlike Spirit Walker they don't get The Taming's permanent elemental bonus, so Twister's elemental gains depend on actively laid ground.
Weapon Sets are the key difference:成熟 play usually puts 'high-APS spear + Whirling Slash stage gen' on set 1 and 'high-damage/crit spear + Twister/Barrage' on set 2. Ice-Tipped Arrows' cold conversion only affects Twister when both share the same weapon set; across sets it does not convert Whirling Slash damage.
- Spirit Walker: Twister main damage + The Taming permanent elemental + speed-to-damage.
- Deadeye / Amazon: Twister mostly clear supplement, relies on active elemental ground.
- Whirling Slash kept at level 1 to suppress its mana cost; it is not a damage skill.
- Ice-Tipped Arrows cold conversion only applies to Twister in the same weapon set.
Common Mistakes: Why It 'Works but Feels Low-Damage'
Casting Twister on empty: without first stacking Whirlwind stages, blade count and damage are at base. Correct play is Whirling Slash to 2–4 stages, then Twister.
Over-levelling Whirling Slash: it is only a stage generator and reposition tool; higher levels just raise its mana cost without helping Twister, and hurt sustained casting.
Ice-Tipped Arrows in the wrong set: the cold conversion only affects Twister when it shares the weapon set; in another set it only converts Whirling Slash, which is pointless.
Pure stacking on boss: the same-target hit limit makes 'more blades' diminish on bosses; instead stack Duration, attack speed, elemental bonuses and use Barrage to focus.
Ignoring projectile speed: in the Spirit Walker system, not stacking projectile speed throws away an entire damage-conversion chain.
- Problem: Twister fires but can't clear. Answer: Whirling Slash to stack stages first, then spend; more stages = more damage.
- Problem: mana drains fast. Answer: keep Whirling Slash at level 1; check weapon-set and aura mana support.
- Problem: boss much slower than clear. Answer: use Barrage to focus blades on boss and add Duration + elemental bonuses, not just blade count.

Open source ↗Frequently Asked Questions
Is Twister really weak on its own?
The base cast is weak because most damage comes from spent Whirlwind stages. Stack Whirling Slash to 2–4 stages then Twister and the difference is dramatic.
Treat it as a 'stage consumer', not an independent attack — that is the key to understanding the skill.
What is the maximum Whirlwind stages?
Community and guides commonly describe up to 4 stages; each stage becomes extra blades and damage on Twister cast.
The exact cap depends on your current client version; verify in-game with the skill panel.
Why doesn't my Twister trigger elemental bonuses?
Twister needs to be on fire/electric/ice ground (Elemental Whirlwind) to gain the matching extra damage.
Without actively laid ground, use The Taming like Spirit Walker to make the bonus permanent; otherwise confirm you actually passed through the ground.
How do I handle the boss single-target?
Use Barrage to focus blades on the boss and stack Duration, attack speed and elemental bonuses.
Because of the same-target hit limit, blade count has diminishing returns on single targets; focus burst beats quantity.
