QUICK ANSWER
Remember These First
He hides in the manor chapel; read the Psalm of Madness plaque to reveal and spawn him.
Most of his attacks are fire-based, so Fire Resistance dramatically lowers the fight's danger.
His stagger meter fills fast — staying aggressive lets you interrupt his deadliest barrage.
Fire, plus some Physical
Find the chapel, read Psalm of Madness
Candlemass' Essence -> +20 Maximum Life
Meteor Burst (crouch barrage)
FAQ
Top search questions: chapel, Essence, fire
Where is Candlemass in Ogham Manor?
Always on the first floor. Explore until you find a chapel/shrine with a statue and a 'Psalm of Madness' plaque; read the plaque and the statue becomes Candlemass.
What does Candlemass' Essence do?
Consuming it grants a permanent +20 Maximum Life. It is one of the Act 1 permanent-boost bosses, worth clearing before Count Geonor.
Why is the fight so fire-heavy?
Every named attack except the leap impact is fire. Stack Fire Resistance (ring/charm) and the Meteor Burst becomes manageable.
Is the Cleave unparryable?
Older 0.2.0c reports of an unparryable Cleave are outdated; current-version Candlemass uses a normal frontal sword swing you can sidestep or parry.
ACCESS & CONTEXT
How to Reach Candlemass
Enter Ogham Manor
Progress the Act 1 Ogham Manor section until you can roam the first floor.
Find the chapel
Explore the first floor (often the north/north-east) for a chapel with pews and a large shrine.
Locate the plaque
At the altar you'll find a statue with a 'Psalm of Madness' plaque in front of it.
Read the Psalm of Madness
Read the plaque; the statue transforms into Candlemass, the Living Rite and the fight begins.
Activate checkpoint
Activate the checkpoint near the chapel entrance before engaging.
OVERVIEW
Encounter Overview
Candlemass is a candle-covered humanoid who fights with a flaming sword and a back full of candle-rockets. The arena is the chapel aisle between pews, which gives you room to flank him while he is rooted in place.
He is not a phase boss — pressure comes from reading his tells and punishing the crouch. Because his stagger meter fills quickly, an aggressive build can lock him down before Meteor Burst resolves.
- Mostly fire damage — Fire Resistance is the single best prep.
- He roots himself during several attacks; flank and free-hit.
- Stagger meter fills fast; aggression is rewarded.
- The crouch tells you Meteor Burst is coming — create distance.
ARENA READING
The Chapel Arena
The fight takes place in the first-floor chapel: a long aisle between pew rows leading to the shrine. Candlemass roots in place for Fire Breath and Leaping Smash, so the side aisles are your safe lanes.
Keep the checkpoint behind you in mind; if you die, you re-enter at the chapel door, not the manor entrance.
- Long narrow aisle — circle to the sides during rooted attacks.
- Back-pedal down the aisle to escape Fire Breath range.
- Checkpoint sits at the chapel entrance.
PHASE BREAKDOWN
Phases & Fight Flow
Phase 1 · Phase 1 — Single Continuous Fight
Trigger: After reading the Psalm of Madness plaque.
Objectives- Dodge fire arcs
- Escape the crouch barrage
- Stagger and kill
No formal phase split; the danger spike is the crouch-into-Meteor-Burst tell.

ATTACK REFERENCE
Attack Recognition and Response
| Attack | Telegraph | Response | Common mistakes | Danger |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Flame Slash (Cleave)Phase 1 — Single Continuous Fight | Wind-up then a wide frontal sword swing that launches a fire arc. | Roll sideways or parry; the arc is frontal only. | Standing in front during the swing | Med |
| Candle Wave (Fire Breath)Phase 1 — Single Continuous Fight | Rears back, then exhales a persistent gout of flame that tracks you briefly. | Back down the aisle or flank while he is rooted; he abandons it if you leave range. | Tanking the breath | High |
| Leap SlamPhase 1 — Single Continuous Fight | Leaps into the air and crashes down, shooting a blade beam in his facing direction. | Dodge the landing AoE, then avoid the line of fire behind it. | Standing in the landing + beam line | Med |
| Meteor Burst (Crouch Barrage)Phase 1 — Single Continuous Fight | Crouches low; candles ignite and launch a stream of explosive fire bursts saturating the area in front and sides. | The moment he crouches, run to the side/rear and keep moving; only chip damage if you stay behind him. | Staying in front during the crouch | High |

BEFORE THE FIGHT
Pre-Fight Preparation Checklist
| Done | Check | Why it matters | Quick fix |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fire Resistance A ring or charm with Fire Resistance. | Nearly every attack is fire. | Socket a Fire Resist roll before the fight. | |
| Stagger tools A way to apply stun/heavy hit. | His stagger meter fills fast. | Aggressive hits or stun skill. | |
| Mobility A dash or roll ready. | Meteor Burst needs side/rear movement. | Movement skill or flask of speed. | |
| Essence pickup space Inventory not full. | The Essence drops on the ground. | Free a slot before the kill. |
BUILD-SPECIFIC STRATEGY
Build Considerations
Candlemass rewards aggression. Because his stagger meter fills quickly, a build that can pressure him will interrupt Meteor Burst and shorten the fight.
Fire Resistance is the highest-leverage defensive stat here; pair it with mobility so the crouch barrage never catches you in front.
- Aggro to fill his stagger and interrupt the barrage.
- Fire Resist > everything else.
- Flank during rooted attacks for free hits.
- Keep movement for the crouch tell.
COMMUNITY EVIDENCE
Community Questions and Evidence
Candlemass' Essence did not grant +20 Life
Players report the bonus not applying after consuming.

Is the Cleave unparryable?
Old 0.2.0c reports claimed an unparryable Cleave.
