Overview
The Crit Comet Disciple stacks critical chance so self-cast Comet lands a crit almost every hit, turning a slow heavy spell into a reliable burst tool. You level with Frostbolt and Frost Bomb, then add Comet once crit and cast speed support it.
This is a verification-first guide. '100% crit' is treated as an entry gate for the boss variant, not a promise that every character is free. Exact crit nodes, support links and weapon-set splits are described from current creator guides.
Pros and Cons
Pros
- Comet crits delete bosses once the crit gate is met.
- Self-cast has no trigger RNG; the burst is on your timing.
- Clear and boss use a readable, repeatable combo.
- Scales smoothly from a low-budget start.
Cons
- 100% crit is a target, not a starting state - low-budget copies miss damage.
- Comet cast time plus mana can stall if both are ignored.
- Disciple is not automatically better than Chronomancer for every player.
- Needs real crit gear before the payoff appears.
Is This Build Right For You?
Pick Crit Comet if you want a spell burst fantasy and you are willing to manage crit thresholds, a two-weapon-set config and a deliberate boss rotation. It is not a one-button clear; the value is in the burst window.
If you want the cheapest league starter, a non-crit Comet or a different Disciple variant is gentler. Use this page once you accept the crit gate.
Leveling Path
Levels 1-31 - Frostbolt leveling · 1-31
Level with Frostbolt and Frost Bomb. Frost Bomb applies exposure and chill prep; Frostbolt is the filler. Do not force Comet yet.
Levels 32-55 - Pre-crit setup · 32-55
Collect life/resist gear and a basic crit node. Add Sigil of Power for spell scaling. Comet joins once cast speed and crit chance are stable.
Levels 56+ - Crit gate · 56+
Push crit chance toward the target via gear and passive nodes. Keep Frostbolt/Frost Bomb as the mapping combo; reserve Comet for bosses and rares.
Waystones - Endgame · Waystones
Complete the crit gate, then raise crit damage and cast speed. Benchmark on T15 before chasing luxury crit gear.
Skills and Supports
Core
Supports: spell-echo · overabundance · snap
Why: Main burst once crit is online.
Supports: martial-tempo
Mapping vs Bossing: Mapping filler; boss primer before Comet.
Support / Setup
Gear and Uniques
Weapon
Required
- Critical Chance — Crit gate
- A high-crit wand or sceptre; the off-hand can be a focus. Crit chance and spell skill level matter more than raw damage early.
Crit chance / spell level
Body Armour
Required
- Resistances — Survival gate
- Prioritize life and resistances on an evasion or energy-shield base. A hybrid base is fine for the mixed plan.
Life + resistances
Rings / Amulet
Optional
- Critical Damage — Burst multiplier
- Crit multi, life, attributes and a bit of cast speed. Do not over-invest before the crit gate is met.
Crit multi / life
Jewels
Optional
- Spell Skill Level — Direct damage
- Crit chance, crit multi, life and spell skill level. Luxury only after the core is solved.
Crit / life
Stat Priority
- Resistances (cap) — Non-negotiable survival gate
- Critical Chance — Must hit the crit gate first
- Life — Defense pool
- Spell Skill Level — Direct damage before multi
- Critical Damage / Cast Speed — Luxury once core is stable
Upgrade Priority
Starter -> Functional
Cap resistances, secure life, reach a workable crit chance. Comet stays reserved for bosses.
Functional -> Endgame
Close the crit gate, add crit multi and cast speed. Expand the boss combo.
Endgame -> Luxury
Chase perfect crit gear and gem levels only after T15 is comfortable.
Crit Threshold, Not a Fixed Tree
Read your current crit chance, read the planner target, compute the gap, then add or remove crit nodes. Do not paste one 'universal' crit tree - your gear decides which nodes you still need.
A low-budget character that copies a full-crit tree often misses the damage and defense that make the crits pay off. Earn the gate first.
Comet Combo Timeline
Frost Bomb applies exposure and chill prep, then Frostbolt primes freeze, then Comet is the burst. After Comet, read the boss state: repeat the sequence or disengage on a telegraphed slam.
Freeze and crit solve different jobs: freeze creates the safe burst window, crit makes the burst lethal. You need both, not just one.
Weapon Set 2
Weapon Set 1 holds the mapping combo (Frostbolt/Frost Bomb). Weapon Set 2 holds the boss burst config (Comet plus crit supports). Swap to Set 2 before a boss or rare; swap back for packs.
Keep the two sets' support links intentional. A Set 2 that is just 'more crit' without Comet supports wastes the swap.
Mapping Rotation
For normal packs: Frostbolt filler with Frost Bomb prep, move through safe lanes. Save Comet for rares and bosses - it is a burst tool, not a clear tool.
Rare Rotation
For rares: prime with Frost Bomb and Frostbolt, then Comet burst. Use a defensive skill if the rare is dangerous; do not over-extend into a deadly modifier.
Boss Rotation
For bosses: verify the Frost Bomb -> Frostbolt -> Comet sequence in the current client before treating the written order as final. Keep distance, use the burst window, and disengage on telegraphed slams - sustained uptime is not always safe.
Disciple of Varashta Ascendancy
Disciple of Varashta rewards crit-seeking spell play: the ascendancy bonuses amplify crit and spell damage so the Comet burst scales with your crit investment. Take the crit nodes early; the payoff is the boss burst, not mapping speed.
Passive Tree Approach
Start with life, resistances and a few crit nodes, then specialize toward spell crit and crit multi as gear allows. The tree is read against your current crit chance, not copied wholesale.
Budget Variants
Starter uses a rare crit wand and basic life/resist gear. Functional Endgame closes the crit gate and adds Comet supports. Luxury is perfect crit gear and gem levels - do not treat the creator's top crit as your default target.
Defensive Layers
Life plus a recoverable pool (energy shield or leech) is the baseline. Do not rely on the burst alone - at high cast speed you still take hits, so the pool must be real.
Disciple vs Chronomancer
Disciple leans into crit and spell damage for a burst identity; Chronomancer leans into time-manipulation utility. Neither is strictly better - pick Disciple if you want the crit-burst fantasy and accept the crit gate.

Short paraphrases of common community questions and concerns, edited for clarity. Not verbatim quotes.
reddit · Editorial paraphrase
Common report: copying a full-crit tree on bad gear still leaves crit short because the missing gear nodes matter more than the passive nodes.
Crit not capped
Reddit - why is my crit low ↗forum · Editorial paraphrase
Players note that 100% crit without skill level and crit multi still feels weak; the gate is necessary, not sufficient.
Low DPS
Forum - comet damage ↗guide · Editorial paraphrase
Frequent question: which set holds Comet. The consensus is Set 2 for the boss burst, Set 1 for mapping.
Weapon set confusion
Guide comments - set swap ↗Questions and Answers
Is 100% crit the starting point or the goal?
It is the goal for the boss variant. Early characters run a non-crit mapping combo and only close the gate before bossing.
Why does my DPS stay low after 100% crit?
Crit is only one multiplier. Skill level, increased damage and crit multi must follow. Closing the gate without those still feels weak.
Should mapping and bossing use the same skill set?
No. Mapping uses Frostbolt/Frost Bomb on Set 1; Comet burst lives on Set 2 for bosses and rares.
Is Disciple strictly better than Chronomancer?
No. Disciple is the crit-burst identity; Chronomancer is the time-utility identity. Choose by the fantasy you want, not a tier list.
Troubleshooting
Crit chance short of target
- Read current crit from gear, compute the gap vs planner, then add crit nodes or swap a ring/amulet for crit chance.
Comet cast feels slow / mana stalls
- Add cast speed and a mana source (spirit or leech). Do not pair a huge Comet with no cast-speed or mana plan.
