Overview

Hollow Palm Technique lets a Martial Artist fight with empty weapon slots: while both weapon sets are unarmed, your unarmed attacks gain a large amount of added damage and benefit from attack speed scaling. You start the campaign with a normal quarterstaff or wand and swap to unarmed once the technique and a basic defense layer are ready.

This is a verification-first guide. Exact APS, support links and unique thresholds are described from current creator guides; the swap timing, the unarmed rules and the Evasion-versus-Energy-Shield tradeoff are the actionable core.

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Very fast clear once attack speed and unarmed scaling are online.
  • No weapon to upgrade means one fewer gear chase early.
  • Smooth league starter that scales into endgame.
  • Reuses Martial Artist tools (Bell, charges) for bosses.

Cons

  • Unarmed requires both weapon sets empty - a real constraint, not a free bonus.
  • High attack speed raises mana, animation-lock and defense pressure; it is not automatically safer.
  • Copying a luxury high-APS version on a starter budget usually lowers damage.
  • Some bosses punish sustained melee uptime; rotate, do not face-tank.

Is This Build Right For You?

Pick Hollow Palm if you want a fast unarmed Martial Artist and you are comfortable managing weapon-set swaps and a defensive layer before pushing attack speed. It is not a 'do-nothing' build: the speed only pays off once the foundation exists.

League starter and Hyper Speed are different budget tiers. Do not expect the creator's 18 APS showcase on a fresh character; build the starter first.

Leveling Path

  1. Levels 1-23 - Weapon leveling · 1-23

Level with a quarterstaff skill (e.g. a basic martial skill). Unarmed is not available yet; focus on survivability and attribute requirements.

  2. Levels 24-40 - Pre-Hollow setup · 24-40

Reach the Martial Artist ascendancy and collect a basic Evasion/ES layer. Keep a weapon until Hollow Palm Technique and a defensive buffer are ready.

  3. Levels 41+ - Unarmed swap · 41+

Swap both weapon sets to unarmed once the technique is online. Add Tempest Bell and a charge source for boss tools.

  4. Waystones - Endgame · Waystones

Push attack speed and added damage, then layer Energy Shield. Benchmark on T15 before chasing Hyper Speed rolls.

Hollow Palm Transition Checklist

Unarmed is active only when every weapon slot in both sets is empty. Keep that rule in mind before removing a weapon 'for more damage'.

Transition only when: Hollow Palm Technique is available, a basic defense layer exists, and mana sustain is stable. Until then, keep leveling with a weapon.

Unarmed and Defense Mechanics

Hollow Palm Technique reads your (empty) weapon slots and converts that into unarmed added damage. Facebreaker and the technique stack because both reward unarmed attacks; a normal gloved hand without the technique is just a hand.

Evasion and Energy Shield serve different jobs: Evasion reduces melee/bow hit chance, Energy Shield gives a recoverable pool that pairs with CI or hybrid. A high-APS character takes more hits per second, so defense must keep up - speed is not a substitute for it.

Skills and Supports

Core

Hollow Palm (unarmed attack)
Main unarmed damage skill

Supports: martial-tempo · wind-unleashed · close-combat

Why: Scales with attack speed and added unarmed damage.

Tempest Bell
Boss focus point and clear aid

Mapping vs Bossing: Use in bossing for a damage focus; optional in mapping.

Support / Defense

Charged Staff
Charge generation for sustained damage
Wind Dancer / Ghost Dance
Evasion-based avoidance layer

Gear and Uniques

Gloves

Required

  1. Unarmed attack scaling — Core damage source
  • Facebreaker is the core unique; it rewards unarmed attacks with added damage. A rare glove with life/evasion is the starter alternative.

Facebreaker (core unique)

Body Armour

Required

  1. Evasion or Energy Shield — Defense foundation
  • Prioritize Evasion/ES base. Hybrid bases are strong for the mixed defense plan.

Evasion/ES hybrid or pure ES

Rings / Amulet

Required

  1. Resistances — Survival gate
  2. Attribute requirements — Gear access
  • Life, resistances, attribute requirements and a bit of attack speed. Do not over-invest before the core is stable.

Jewels

Optional

  1. Attack speed — Clear speed
  • Attack speed, added phys/cold, life. Luxury only after the core is solved.

Stat Priority

  2. Life / Energy ShieldDefense pool before speed
  3. Attack SpeedMain clear and damage scalar

Upgrade Priority

  1. Starter -> Functional

Cap resistances, secure life/ES, equip Facebreaker.

  2. Functional -> Endgame

Raise attack speed and added damage; add Tempest Bell supports.

  3. Endgame -> Luxury

Chase Hyper Speed rolls and expensive jewels only after T15 is comfortable.

Budget Variants

Starter uses a rare glove and a basic Evasion/ES layer. Functional Endgame adds Facebreaker and a Bell setup. Hyper Speed and Luxury are high-investment showcases - do not treat the creator's top APS as your default target.

Defensive Layers

Evasion plus Wind Dancer/Ghost Dance is the baseline. Energy Shield (often with CI or a hybrid) adds a recoverable pool. Do not rely on attack speed alone - at high APS you take more hits per second, so the pool must be real.

Mapping Rotation

For normal packs: establish the charge engine, then use your fast unarmed attack through safe lanes. Keep moving; the speed is the clear, not a tank stance.

Rare Rotation

For rares: prepare charges and drop Tempest Bell before committing. Use a short defensive skill if the rare is dangerous; do not over-extend into a deadly modifier.

Boss Rotation

For bosses: verify the charge and Bell sequence in the current client before treating the written order as final. Keep distance, use the Bell focus, and disengage on telegraphed slams - sustained melee uptime is not always safe.

Bad Matchups

Bosses that punish sustained melee uptime or apply heavy degens are bad matchups. Rotate, use your defensive layer, and avoid face-tanking. Hollow Palm is not a 'all bosses are free' build.

reddit · Editorial paraphrase

Several players report that pushing attack speed without mana sustain causes empty-mana freezes during boss bursts.

Players note that some bosses punish melee uptime, so they keep distance and use the Bell focus instead of face-tanking.

Questions and Answers

When should I swap to Hollow Palm?

Once Hollow Palm Technique is available, a basic defense layer exists, and mana sustain is stable. Before that, keep leveling with a weapon.

Does unarmed mean I need no gear?

No. Unarmed only means empty weapon slots; you still need gloves (Facebreaker), armour, rings, amulet and a real defense pool. Empty weapon slots are a rule, not a free power.

Why does copying a high-APS version lower my damage?

The showcase APS comes from expensive gear and specific rolls. On a starter budget you lack the supports and defenses that make the speed pay off, so damage and survival both drop.

Is high attack speed automatically safer?

No. Higher APS means more hits taken per second. Your Evasion/Energy Shield must keep up; speed is not a defense substitute.

Troubleshooting

No unarmed bonus active

  • Check that BOTH weapon sets have every weapon slot empty. A single equipped weapon disables Hollow Palm.

Mana empty during boss burst

  • Reduce attack speed temporarily or add mana sustain/leech. The speed tax is real at high APS.
