Overview
Poisonburst Arrow Pathfinder league-starts with a bow and a 1-Chaos unique (Slivertongue) that carries into T15. You clear maps with Poisonburst Arrow and kill bosses with Gas Arrow plus Toxic Growth. Weapon Set 2 holds the poison skills.
Verification-first: the poison-scaling math and crit-transition come from the current creator guides. The Weapon Set rule and the 'attack speed is feel, not damage' point are the actionable core.
Pros and Cons
Pros
- Excellent league starter with a 1-Chaos unique.
- Screen-wide poison clear and huge single-target.
- Permanent immunity to slows (Pathfinder).
- Tanky and fast.
Cons
- Needs a good physical-damage bow.
- High-end gear is expensive.
- Low-budget crit is not worth forcing.
- Rangers are flimsy in early acts; do not get hit.
Is This Build Right For You?
Pick this if you want a smooth poison league starter that scales into endgame and you can manage Weapon Set 2 for bosses. It is beginner-friendly but not zero-gear.
Get a physical-damage bow early; Slivertongue from Act 3 carries a long way.
Leveling Path
Act 1-3 - Bow leveling · 1-45
Level with a physical bow and Lightning Arrow, then Poisonburst Arrow once unlocked. Slivertongue from Act 3 carries to T15.
Act 4+ - Toxic setup · 45-65
Add Toxic Growth and Gas Arrow; set poison skills to Weapon Set 2 (Rigwald's Ferocity gives more damage there).
Maps - Endgame · 65+
Optimize bow physical, poison magnitude and crit. Benchmark before expensive crit gear.
Skills and Supports
Clear
Supports: deadly-poison · bursting-plague
Why: Press and everything dies; the screen-wide poison clear.
Boss / Single-target
Supports: corrosion
Supports: concentrated-area
Mapping vs Bossing: Mapping: Poisonburst Arrow. Bossing: Gas Arrow + Toxic Growth.
Poison Scaling Matrix
Poison magnitude, ailment magnitude and damaging-ailment magnitude are three different stats and they all stack. Attack speed feels good but does not directly add damage. Added chaos helps only in specific cases.
Poison Scaling Matrix
| Stat | Direct | Poison | Stage | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Weapon physical DPS | Weapon physical DPS | Yes | Yes | All |
| Poison magnitude | Poison magnitude | No | Yes | All |
| Attack speed | Attack speed | No | Feel | All |
| Added chaos | Added chaos | Conditional | Conditional | Rare |
Weapon Set 2
Poison skills must be set to Weapon Set 2 because Rigwald's Ferocity grants 30% more damage there. Forgetting this silently halves your poison damage.
Gear and Uniques
Bow
Required
- Physical damage — Poison base

- Poison / ailment magnitude — Direct poison scaling
- Life / Evasion — Defense
- Crit (late) — Optional ceiling
Upgrade Priority
Starter -> Early Endgame
Slivertongue, cap resistances, set poison to Weapon Set 2.
Early -> Endgame
Better bow, add Toxic Growth supports, fix mana.
Endgame -> Crit
Only after the base is solved; do not force crit early.
Crit Transition
Non-crit starter -> once weapon and skill levels are sufficient and crit sources are complete, switch the passive tree and update quiver/amulet -> crit endgame. Do not force crit on a low budget.
Budget Variants
League-start uses Slivertongue and a rare bow. Mid adds quiver upgrades and Toxic Growth supports. High-end crit is a separate ceiling, not the league-start requirement.
Defensive Layers
Evasion plus permanent slow-immunity (Pathfinder) is the base. Life and a quiver with recovery keep you alive; do not get hit in early acts.
Mapping Rotation
For normal packs: press Poisonburst Arrow. Everything dies. Loot. Use Plague Bearer on big packs.
Rare Rotation
For rares: Poisonburst Arrow plus Plague Bearer; use Toxic Growth on tanky rares. Keep moving.
Boss Rotation
For bosses: cast Gas Arrow, fire Toxic Growth into the cloud until it dissipates, repeat. Stormcaller Arrow applies +70% shock. Do not use the mapping button on bosses.

reddit · Editorial paraphrase
Common cause: poison skills not on Weapon Set 2, or a weak physical bow. Players fix it by moving skills and upgrading the bow.
Low DPS

Consensus: do not force crit early; the non-crit base is strong through maps.

Guide comments - bow/quiver order ↗Questions and Answers
Are leveling and endgame the same build?
They share a base (bow + poison + Weapon Set 2). Endgame optimizes the bow, Toxic Growth supports and crit; the skeleton is the same.
Why use Gas Arrow + Toxic Growth on bosses?
Toxic Growth detonates the Gas Arrow cloud for large single-target poison. Mapping just spams Poisonburst Arrow; bosses need the cloud combo.
Why not force crit early?
Crit needs complete sources and a budget the starter lacks. The non-crit base is strong through maps; crit is a late ceiling.
Why is my DPS lower than the planner?
Usually a weak physical bow, missing Weapon Set 2 for poison, or incomplete Toxic Growth supports. Fix those before chasing gear.
Troubleshooting
Poison damage too low
- Confirm poison skills are on Weapon Set 2, the bow has physical damage, and Toxic Growth supports are complete.
Mana problems
- Add % physical damage leeched as mana on rings/gloves, or 2% mana on kill on jewels.
