QUICK ANSWER
Quick answer
Hold Alt on a Notable in the passive tree to see its exact 3-Emotion combination.
Old guides that describe 'Waystone instilling' as a separate old system are out of date; on the current client Waystones are anointed the same way as Amulets.
A Notable far from your tree path, or a fixed map modifier on a Waystone.
Do not anoint a Notable you already allocated on the tree - it will not stack.
Trusting old videos that show a different anointing menu or Waystone-only instilling.

ITEM FAMILY
The ten emotions
Each Distilled Emotion maps to a group of passives and, on Waystones, to a specific map effect. The three you combine, in order, pick the outcome.
Aggression
Distilled Ire
Magic monsters / statsOn a Waystone, adds more magic monsters. In combos it leans toward aggressive/defensive stats (e.g. High Alert, Parrying Motion).
Crit
Distilled Fear
Rare mods / critOn a Waystone, rare monsters gain extra modifiers. In combos it appears in crit builds (Stormcharged).
Utility
Distilled Envy
Whetstones / flasksOn a Waystone, increases Whetstone drops. In combos it appears in flask builds (Heavy Drinker).
Rarity
Distilled Greed
Higher rarity / evasionOn a Waystone, chance of higher-rarity items. In combos it pairs with Ire for evasion (High Alert).
Simulacrum
Distilled Despair
Tablet find / speedOn a Waystone, boosts Simulacrum splinter stack size and Precursor Tablet find. Used in attack-speed combos (Deep Trance).
Remaining
Disgust / Suffering / Paranoia / Guilt / Isolation
Specialised effectsEach adds its own map modifier and completes specific Notable combinations. Check the in-game Alt preview for the exact set.
ACQUISITION
How to get Distilled Emotions
Emotions come almost entirely from Delirium content.
Delirium maps
Run maps with the Delirium modifier; each reward guarantees at least one Distilled Emotion, scaling with how long you stay in the fog.
Simulacrum
Endgame wave content that drops Emotions and splinters.
Reforging Bench
Combine three of the same lower-tier Emotion into a higher tier.
Currency Exchange / trade
Buy the specific Emotions you need from other players.
USE FLOW
How to anoint
Find the Notable
Open the passive tree, hold Alt on a Notable to see its required 3-Emotion combination and order.
Open Instilling
Right-click any Distilled Emotion to open the Instilling / Decanter window.
Place items
Put the Amulet in the top slot, the three Emotions in the bottom slots left to right.
Instill
Confirm the named passive, then Instill. The result is an item implicit on the Amulet.
VALID TARGET MATRIX
What you can anoint
Amulets take a Notable passive; Waystones take a map modifier. You cannot anoint rings or other gear on the current client.
| Target | Amulet | Waystone | Ring | Note |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Notable passive | Yes | No | No | Granted as an implicit |
| Map modifier | No | Yes | No | Waystone effect |
| Already on tree? | Wastes the anoint | N/A | No | Do not double-allocate |
PRE-USE CHECKLIST
Pre-use checklist
| Done | Check | Why it matters | Quick fix |
|---|---|---|---|
| Notable not already allocated Confirm the Notable is not on your passive tree path. | Anointing does not stack with the tree node. | Pick a Notable outside your path. | |
| Right combination and order Alt-preview the Notable; match the three Emotions left to right. | Wrong order gives a different (or unwanted) result. | Re-check the preview before Instilling. | |
| Amulet is the one you keep The enchantment is permanent until re-anointed. | Re-anointing overwrites it. | Use your best Amulet. |

COMMUNITY EVIDENCE
Community evidence
I anointed a Notable I already have on the tree - did it stack?
A player anointed a Notable they had allocated, expecting double value.
Anointing grants the Notable as an item implicit; it does not stack with the same tree node. The anoint was wasted.
Only anoint Notables you have NOT allocated on the tree.
Why do old videos show Waystone instilling differently?
Players followed outdated guides describing a separate old system.
The anointing flow changed in 0.5 (Runes of Aldur); current client uses the Decanter of Madness / Instilling window for both Amulets and Waystones.
Use the current in-game Instilling window; ignore old Waystone-only guides.

Old guide shows different menu
Direct answer: The flow changed in 0.5; use the current Instilling window.
