QUICK ANSWER
Quick answer
Sustain comes from drop-chance suffixes, Atlas passives and not dying - not from rarity alone.
A failed (uncompleted) map still consumes the Waystone and any Tablets slotted into it.
Run maps you can complete; upgrade 3 same-tier Waystones at the Reforging Bench.
Favour suffixes that add Waystone Drop Chance and invest Atlas points into quantity.
Dying in a map (loses the Waystone) and over-juicing mods your build cannot survive.
QUICK FACTS
Quick facts
- Tiers
- 1 to 16
- Each tier raises monster level and map difficulty.
- Use
- One attempt per Waystone
- Placed in the Map Device; consumed whether or not you complete it.
- Modifiers
- Prefixes + Suffixes
- Suffixes add downsides but raise Waystone Drop Chance.
- T16
- Vaal-corrupt a T15
- Cannot be reforged; T15 can be corrupted upward to T16.
ITEM FAMILY
What a Waystone is
Waystones are the consumable items that open Atlas map nodes. They are the backbone of endgame progression: clearing maps grants Atlas passive points and unlocks higher tiers.
Progression
Standard Waystone
Opens a map nodeNormal / Magic / Rare Waystones open a map of their tier. Higher rarity means more modifiers.
Special
Tower Waystone
Reveals + Tablet dropCompleting a Tower reveals the surrounding Atlas and guarantees a Precursor Tablet.
Pinnacle
Corrupted / T16 Waystone
Top tierT16 is reached by Vaal-corrupting a T15 Waystone; required for Citadels.
PROPERTIES
Waystone properties
- Tier
- 1 - 16
- Determines monster level and map difficulty. A Tier 5 Waystone pushes monsters to roughly level 70.
- Attempts
- One per Waystone
- Whether you clear or fail, the Waystone is consumed.
- Prefixes
- Upsides
- More monsters, gold, rarity, pack size. Generally beneficial.
- Suffixes
- Downsides + drop chance
- Curses or extra monster damage, but each adds to Waystone Drop Chance.
- Waystone Drop Chance
- 0% - 700%
- The stat that drives sustain; raised by suffixes, rarity and Atlas passives.
ACQUISITION
How to get Waystones
Waystones enter your pool from several places, and the goal is to keep that pool from running dry.
Map bosses and rares
The primary sustain source. Bosses almost always drop a Waystone; rares and the map completion add more.
Doryani / campaign reward
You receive a free Waystone after the campaign and skill books as you clear tiers.
Reforging Bench
Combine three Waystones of the same tier and rarity to make one a tier higher (not T15 to T16).
Vaal Orb (T15)
Corrupt a T15 Waystone for a chance at a T16; unpredictable but the only path to T16.
USE FLOW
How to use a Waystone
Pick a map node
Choose a node you can clear with the tier you plan to use.
Slot the Waystone
Place it in the Map Device box for that node.
Traverse
Open the portal and run the map; it is consumed on entry.
CRAFTING
Modifying Waystones
Waystones take standard currency like any item. Orbs of Transmutation and Augmentation add modifiers; a Regal or Alchemy upgrades rarity and adds more; Exalted and Chaos Orbs push the modifier pool further.
Distilled Emotions can also be applied through the Instilling window (up to three), each adding a map modifier such as extra magic or rare monsters. Note that older guides claimed Waystones could not take Emotions - that guidance is out of date on the current client.
- More modifiers = more Tablets can be slotted (0-2 mods: 1 slot, 3-5: 2, 6+: 3).
- A Corrupted Nexus requires a Waystone with at least 4 modifiers.
- Balance upside against the downside that comes with each suffix.
PRE-USE CHECKLIST
Pre-use checklist
| Done | Check | Why it matters | Quick fix |
|---|---|---|---|
| You can clear it Your build survives the tier and the suffixes on the Waystone. | Dying consumes the Waystone with no reward. | Drop to a lower tier or remove dangerous mods. | |
| Mods fit the build No hard counter (e.g. regeneration enemy, big elemental hits) for your build. | Wrong mods cause avoidable deaths. | Use a plainer Waystone for that node. | |
| T15/T16 rules noted Citadels need T15; Corrupted Nexus needs >=4 mods. | Wrong tier blocks quest progress. | Prepare the right Waystone before the attempt. |
OUTCOME ANALYSIS
Outcomes by investment
| Scenario | Benefit | Risk | Audience | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Low-tier, can clear comfortably | Steady Atlas points and basic sustain | Low returns | Early endgame | Low Run to build the tier ladder |
| T15 with >=4 mods for Corrupted Nexus | Cleansed maps and Fracturing Orbs | Harder map | Quest runners | Medium Invest suffixes you can survive |
| T16 Citadel attempt | Unique fragment rewards | One attempt only | Pinnacle chasers | High Only with a strong, proven build |
RISK ANALYSIS
Risk analysis
| Scenario | Gain | Loss | Risk | Recommendation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Dying in the map | None | Waystone and any slotted Tablets consumed, no completion | High | Do not over-juice; clear what you can survive. |
| High rarity, no drop-chance suffixes | More mods | Poor sustain, pool shrinks | Medium | Prefer suffixes that add Waystone Drop Chance. |
| Over-investing in T15 before T16 | Citadel access | Wasted if you cannot clear it | Medium | Confirm clear speed first. |
COMMUNITY EVIDENCE
Community evidence
Why do my Waystones keep running out even at high tier?
A player had Rare Waystones but the pool still shrank.
Rarity alone does not sustain; only drop-chance suffixes, Atlas passives and avoiding deaths keep the pool up.
Add suffixes with Waystone Drop Chance and invest Atlas quantity nodes.
Do I lose the Waystone if the map fails?
Players unsure what a failed map costs.
The Waystone is consumed on entry; an uncompleted map yields no completion rewards and loses slotted Tablets.
Treat every Waystone as a single attempt; only run what you can finish.

Problems and direct answers
Waystone pool is shrinking
Direct answer: You are not getting enough drop-chance suffixes and/or dying too often.
- Add Waystone Drop Chance suffixes and review Atlas passives.
Cannot reforge to T16
Direct answer: T16 cannot be reforged; Vaal-corrupt a T15 Waystone for a chance at T16.
- Use a Vaal Orb on a T15, not the Reforging Bench.
Corrupted Nexus will not open
Direct answer: The Waystone needs at least 4 modifiers to open a Corrupted Nexus.
- Add modifiers with currency until you reach 4+.
PATCH HISTORY
Patch history
Tablets moved from Towers to being slotted alongside Waystones; Waystone modifier count now controls Tablet slots.
Waystone tiers 1-16, drop-chance sustain and T16 via Vaal corrupt of T15 remain the current endgame progression.
