QUICK ANSWER

Quick answer

Runes and Soul Cores are socketables you insert into augment sockets on weapons and armour. Runes are common single-stat items; Soul Cores are rarer and stronger.

The same Rune gives a different bonus depending on the slot it is placed in.

Sockets are added by Artificer's Orb on martial weapons and armour.

Use a Rune

Use a Rune for a cheap, single-stat or resistance fix on the matching slot.

Save a Soul Core

Save Soul Cores for your best base where the bigger bonus matters.

Plan the slot

Match the socketable to the slot, not just the stat you want.

ITEM FAMILY

Item family

Runes and Soul Cores both occupy augment sockets, but they differ in rarity, strength, and how you should spend them.

COMMON

Rune

Single-stat socketable

A Rune grants one bonus that scales with its tier. Cheap and widely available, it is the default choice for filling a gap.

RARE

Soul Core

Strong single-effect socketable

A Soul Core is rarer and usually grants a much larger or special effect. Reserve it for gear you will keep for a long time.

EFFECT

Rune vs Soul Core

A Rune is the everyday socketable. It provides a single, predictable bonus and comes in Lesser, Normal, and Greater tiers so you can scale the effect with currency you can actually farm.

A Soul Core is the premium option. It is far less common and generally delivers a stronger or more specialized effect for the same slot. Because it is scarce, it is best saved for a base you intend to keep rather than a transitional item.

  • Runes: cheap, single-stat, tiered.
  • Soul Cores: rare, strong, often build-defining.

VALID TARGET MATRIX

Socket requirements

A socketable can only be inserted into an augment socket. Caster weapons cannot receive augment sockets, and corrupted or sanctified items have extra restrictions.

VALID TARGET MATRIX

The same socketable can produce a different bonus depending on the slot. Always check the in-game tooltip for the slot you plan to use.

ACQUISITION

Acquisition

Runes drop from general gameplay and can be farmed from specific content; Soul Cores are far rarer.

  1. World and map drops

Runes drop from monsters, chests, and strongboxes across the campaign and endgame.

  2. Vendor and currency exchange

Some tiers can be upgraded or acquired through vendor recipes and currency exchange where available.

  3. Soul Core sources

Soul Cores come from rarer content and high-value drops; expect to trade for them.

9

USE FLOW

How to socket

  1. Open the item

Right-click the item with an augment socket to open the socket view.

  2. Drag in the socketable

Place the Rune or Soul Core into the open socket.

  3. Confirm the slot bonus

Read the tooltip; the bonus depends on the slot.

10

CRAFTING

Replacement and extraction

You can replace a socketable by inserting a new one, but recovering the original usually requires Orb of Extraction or a similar recovery method.

Extraction has a cost and is not always available, so decide carefully before committing a Soul Core to a base you may replace.

  • Replacing overwrites the old socketable.
  • Extraction cost varies; confirm before extracting.
11

BUILD USAGE

Build usage

Most builds use socketables to patch the one defensive or offensive hole the tree and gear cannot cover.

Resistance cap

Use a Rune on the slot that grants the resistance you are missing to hit 75%.

Attribute fix

A helmet or glove Rune can supply the attribute points needed to equip a key gem.

Damage boost

Weapon Runes and Soul Cores add the damage type your build scales.

12

USE CASES

Choosing by stat goal

Decide the goal before opening the socket. A fire-resistance Rune belongs on the slot that grants resistance, not necessarily the weapon.

Prioritize: cap resistances first, then attributes for gem requirements, then defensive pool, then damage.

  • Missing fire/cold/lightning res -> resistance Rune on the resistance slot.
  • Short on Strength/Intelligence/Dexterity -> attribute Rune on helmet or gloves.
  • Already capped -> invest in life, armour, or damage.

PROBLEMS & DIRECT ANSWERS

Problems and direct answers

No socket to insert into

Direct answer: The item needs an augment socket from Artificer's Orb first.

  1. Confirm the item is a martial weapon or armour with a free socket.
Bonus differs from expectation

Direct answer: The slot changes the bonus; read the tooltip for that slot.

  1. Compare the weapon, chest, helmet, glove, and boot tooltips.

faq

FAQ

Is a Soul Core always better than a Rune?

Usually stronger, but it is far rarer; use Runes for cheap fixes and save Soul Cores for lasting gear.

Can I move a socketable between items?

You replace it by inserting a new one; recovering the old one needs extraction.

Why does the same Rune feel different per slot?

The bonus scales with the slot; always read the per-slot tooltip.
