QUICK ANSWER
Remember These First
Complete the 3 outer Rituals first; the black veil over the center altar only clears after all 3.
Kill the King, pick up the Gembloom Skull, then RIGHT-CLICK it in inventory — Spirit is not auto-applied.
This is NOT the Pinnacle King (Crux of Nothingness, maze / Petition Splinter). Different boss, different reward.
+30 maximum Spirit (one-time)
Finish the 3 outer Rituals
Pick up AND right-click the Skull
Spirit likely reserved by a Persistent Skill
FAQ
Top search questions: rituals, Skull, Spirit
Why won't the last Ritual start?
The center Ritual only activates after you complete the 3 outer Rituals in Freythorn. If a black cloud still blocks the center altar, you have an outer Ritual left.
How many Rituals do I need?
Three outer Rituals, then the center Ritual that spawns the King. Four total, in that order.
Why didn't my Spirit increase after the kill?
The +30 only applies after you pick up the Gembloom Skull AND right-click it. The kill alone does nothing. Also check if a Persistent Skill is reserving your Spirit (0/30 is not a bug).
Is this the Pinnacle King?
No. The campaign Freythorn King drops the Gembloom Skull for +30 Spirit. The Pinnacle King (Crux of Nothingness) is an endgame fight with a maze and Petition Splinters — do not mix them up.
ACCESS & CONTEXT
How to Reach

Freythorn = +30 Spirit
Start Ominous Altars
Talk to Finn in Clearfell Encampment to begin the Ominous Altars side quest.

Find the Rituals
Locate the 3 outer Ritual Altars (near edges / checkpoints), then the center altar behind the black veil.
OVERVIEW
Encounter Overview
The Freythorn King in the Mists is a two-form fight: a hooded staff-wielder (human form) that transitions into a treant / Wildwood form around 25-33% HP. It is widely regarded as the player's first real multi-phase boss in Act 1.
The fight is gated by Rituals, not just a door. You must cleanse the zone of its 3 outer Rituals before the center altar activates and the King appears.
- 3 outer Rituals -> center Ritual -> King spawns.
- Human form, then Wildwood / treant form at low HP.
- The reward is the Gembloom Skull, not a direct stat gain.
ARENA READING
Ritual Route and Arena
Inside Freythorn, find and complete 3 Ritual Altars, usually near the zone edges and each near a checkpoint. Clearing all 3 lifts the black veil over the central altar.
Activating the center altar spawns a cultist wave; clear it, then the King in the Mists appears. The arena is a compact circular space, so positioning matters in the second form.
- Outer Rituals near edges / checkpoints.
- Center altar unlocks after all 3 outer Rituals.
- Cultist wave precedes the King.
PHASE BREAKDOWN
Phases & Fight Flow
Phase 1 · Phase 1 — Human Form (100%-~30%)
Trigger: King spawns after the center Ritual.
Objectives- Read curse colors
- Dodge Blood Pools
- Punish recovery
Slow, telegraphed attacks: Thorngrip, Invasive Growth, Blood Pools, Affliction Totems, plus Ritual of Dance / Meditation curses.

OVERVIEW
Reward Claim Flow — Gembloom Skull to +30 Spirit
After the center Ritual, kill the King. The Gembloom Skull drops on the ground (often near / behind the central altar, easy to miss).
Pick it up, then RIGHT-CLICK it in your inventory. The +30 maximum Spirit is applied only on use — the kill does not grant it automatically.
- Complete 3 outer Rituals -> center Ritual.
- King spawns -> kill him.
- Gembloom Skull drops (check behind the altar).
- Pick it up.
- Right-click the Skull in inventory -> +30 Spirit.
- One-time; Spirit can be reserved by Persistent Skills.
REWARDS & PROGRESSION
Rewards and Drops
Gembloom Skull
Grants +30 to maximum Spirit. Right-click to use. One-time.
+30 Maximum Spirit
Applied only after right-clicking the Skull, not on kill.
BEFORE THE FIGHT
Pre-Fight Preparation Checklist
| Done | Check | Why it matters | Quick fix |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chaos resistance Some Chaos res if possible. | Ritual curses and Insect Swarm deal Chaos DoT. | Chaos rolls or a Chaos charm. | |
| Movement A movement skill or flask of speed. | The curses force you to keep moving or stop precisely. | Movement-speed suffix. | |
| Inventory space A free slot for the Skull. | The Skull drops on the ground. | Free a slot before the kill. | |
| Persistent Skill check Note any Spirit-reserving skills. | 0/30 after use may just be reservation, not a bug. | Check the Spirit UI after use. |
BUILD-SPECIFIC STRATEGY
Build Considerations
The curse mechanics decide the fight. Ritual of Dance wants you moving; Ritual of Meditation wants you still. Reading the sigil color (purple = move, red = stop) is the core skill.
The second form is more mobile and projects more, so ranged kits have an easier time; melee must respect the Blood Pools and the brief untargetable transform.
- Purple sigil = keep moving; red sigil = stop.
- Ranged kites the second form comfortably.
- Melee: punish after the slam, avoid Blood Pools.
- Clear the cultist wave before the King.
COMMUNITY EVIDENCE
Community Questions and Evidence
Gembloom Skull didn't drop / is hard to pick up
Multiple players report the green quest item being hard to target at the altar, or unlootable; one fix was moving around the altar until the skull popped up.
The Skull drops at the central altar and is easy to miss, especially on controller. It is a one-time drop.
Pick up the Gembloom Skull after the kill; it is a one-time quest drop.
Spirit shows 0/30 after using the Skull
A player saw 0/30 and thought the Skull failed; the cause was a Persistent Skill reserving exactly 30 Spirit.
0/30 is the reserved pool, not a bug. The maximum Spirit cap did rise; check the base value, not the reserved amount.
Check whether a Persistent Skill is reserving your Spirit.
PROBLEMS & DIRECT ANSWERS
Common Problems and Fixes
The center Ritual won't start
Direct answer: You have an outer Ritual left. Complete all 3 outer Rituals; the black veil lifts only after the third.
- 3 outer Rituals done?
- Black veil still up?
I killed the King but Spirit didn't rise
Direct answer: Pick up the Gembloom Skull AND right-click it. The kill does not apply Spirit. Also check Persistent Skill reservation (0/30 is not a bug).
- Skull picked up?
- Skull right-clicked?
- Spirit reserved?
The Skull is nowhere on the ground
Direct answer: It drops near / behind the central altar. Circle the altar — on controller it can be a tiny, hard-to-target pickup.
- Did you check behind the altar?
- Inventory not full?
