Overview

This Infernalist progresses from Level 1: you level with Spark, add Frostbolt, then enable Cast on Critical (CoC) with Comet once the trigger tools exist. Recoup and Ward are layered on top for defense and a high-end variant.

Verification-first: the exact progression overlaps and variant math come from the current creator guide. The trigger diagnostic and the 'Ward is a variant' framing are the actionable core.

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Smooth Level 1 to endgame path with clear stages.
  • Recoup turns the Infernalist downside into a defense.
  • Ward variant exists for players who want it.

Cons

  • Complex trigger interactions; not a beginner build.
  • Comet may not trigger if crit/energy/socket rules are wrong.
  • Ward is not invincibility; uptime matters.
  • Final Form needs a budget the starter does not have.

Is This Build Right For You?

Pick this if you want a caster that scales from league start into a trigger-based endgame and you are comfortable with CoC setup. It is not a copy-paste Final Form on day one.

Start with Spark and follow the stage gates; do not jump to the final CoC from Level 1.

Leveling Path (Progression State Machine)

  1. Campaign - Spark · 1-30

Level with Spark. It is the safe campaign clearer before Frostbolt and CoC.

  2. Early Frostbolt · 30-45

Add Frostbolt once available; still pre-trigger.

  3. CoC available · 45-60

Enable Cast on Critical with Comet once the trigger link and crit exist.

  4. Cheap Endgame · 60-75

Recoup-based endgame on a modest budget.

  5. Ward Stacking / Final Form · 75+

High-investment variants only after the cheap endgame is comfortable.

Trigger Mechanics

Cast on Critical spends trigger energy on critical hits and automatically casts the linked Comet. Energy is generated by crits, so critical chance and cast speed are the limiter - not raw spell damage.

Recoup Mechanics

Recoup returns a portion of damage taken as life/ES over time. It solves the Infernalist's self-damage downside and sustains mapping, but it does not cover every burst - a huge one-shot still kills.

Ward Variant

Ward stacking is a high-end variant, not the default. It inverts some resource rules and is likely 0.5-specific; treat it as an optional branch, not the league-start loadout.

Gear and Uniques

Body / ES

Required

  1. Energy Shield — Defense pool
  2. Recoup — Sustain
  • An ES base with recoup and resistances. The defensive anchor.

ES + recoup

Wand / Focus

Recommended

  1. Cast speed — Trigger rate
  • Spell level, crit, cast speed. Upgrade priority for damage.

Ward gear (variant)

Optional

  1. Ward — Variant ceiling
  • Ward-converting gear only for the high-end variant.

Ward conversion

Stat Priority

  2. Cast speedTrigger rate
  3. Energy Shield + RecoupDefense and sustain
  4. Mana / recoveryTrigger cost
  5. Spell skill levelDamage

Upgrade Priority

  1. Starter -> Cheap Endgame

Cap resistances, secure recoup and ES, enable CoC.

  2. Cheap -> Expensive

Add crit and cast speed; raise spell level.

  3. Expensive -> Ward/Final

Only after cheap endgame is comfortable; high-investment branch.

Budget Variants

Cheap Endgame is the realistic league-start target. Expensive adds crit. Ward Stacking and Final Form are high-investment branches - Final Form is not a low-budget build.

Defensive Layers

Recoup plus Energy Shield is the core. Ward adds a layer in the variant but is not invincibility; keep resistances capped and watch for one-shots that bypass recoup.

Mapping Rotation

For mapping: keep Spark/Frostbolt feeding CoC, maintain recoup uptime, and move. The clear is automatic once the trigger is tuned.

Rare Rotation

For rares: ensure crit/energy so Comet fires; if it stalls, check the single-target config rather than dumping more damage gems.

Boss Rotation

For bosses: pre-cast setup, let CoC do the work, and manage mana/recoup during the fight. Do not expect the Final Form numbers on a starter budget.

reddit · Editorial paraphrase

Players ask why Comet stops after a few casts; the usual cause is mana, not damage.

Questions and Answers

Why do leveling stages overlap?

Because skills like Spark persist into early maps while Frostbolt/CoC are being introduced. Overlap is intentional; follow the stage gates, not a single level.

What does Recoup actually solve?

It returns a portion of damage taken as life/ES over time, sustaining the Infernalist self-damage and mapping. It does not cover every burst.

Why is Ward not the default?

Ward stacking inverts resource rules and is a high-investment variant, likely 0.5-specific. The league-start loadout is the recoup endgame.

Why does copying Final Form fail for new players?

Final Form needs crit gear, Ward conversion and a budget the starter lacks. Build the cheap endgame first, then branch.

Troubleshooting

Comet never triggers

  • Verify CoC is socketed with Comet, crit chance is real, and trigger energy fills. Check in the order listed in the diagnostic table.

Mana empty mid-fight

  • Lower spell cost or add mana recovery; triggered spells still cost mana.
