Overview
Supporting Fire is a Tactician-exclusive command skill. You mark a target area and, on a fixed cooldown, your mercenary unleashes a pre-arranged volley of crossbow shots into that zone without you manually aiming each arrow. This makes the build one of the lowest-input mapping options in the game.
Damage scales from Strength and Dexterity rather than from a single attribute, so your attribute gear does double duty for both survival and damage. The trade-off is that single-target pressure is softer than dedicated boss builds, and the cooldown creates real empty windows if you mistime the cast.
Pros and Cons
Pros
- Genuinely low-input mapping — most packs die to the automated volley.
- Strength and Dexterity both scale damage, so attribute gear is efficient.
- Tactician command buffs make the volley feel like a separate auto-cast skill.
- Comfortable for players who dislike aim-heavy crossbow play.
Cons
- Single-target is weaker than dedicated boss builds; tanky rares feel slow.
- Cooldown gating means empty windows if you mis-time the cast.
- Requires the Supporting Fire skill and a Tactician ascendancy — no other class can use it.
- High-investment versions need specific attribute thresholds before they feel smooth.
Is This Build Right For You?
Supporting Fire is best for players who want relaxed, reliable mapping and are willing to accept a softer bossing ceiling. If your priority is deleting uber pinnacle bosses in record time, a dedicated boss build will serve you better.
You must be a Mercenary who plans to ascend Tactician, because Supporting Fire is flagged Tactician-exclusive. It is not a league-starter in the sense of being brain-dead — you still need the skill unlocked and a basic attribute base before the loop feels good.
Leveling Path (Before Supporting Fire)
Act 1 — Crossbow Foundation · 1-30
Level with a standard crossbow skill such as Fragmentation Round or Explosive Shot. Focus on life, resistances, and a cheap quiver. Supporting Fire is not available yet, so treat this as a normal mercenary leveling phase.
Act 2-3 — Unlock Tactician · 30-55
Choose the Tactician ascendancy and grab the Supporting Fire skill as soon as it is offered. Begin transitioning gear toward Strength and Dexterity so the volley already benefits from your attributes.
Early Maps — Close the Cooldown · 55-70
Invest in cooldown recovery and skill level. The goal is a short, predictable cooldown so the automated volley covers packs without long dead time.
Skills and Support Gems
Primary — Supporting Fire
Supports: martial-tempo · concentrated-effect · fire-infusion · heightened-cruelty · pinpoint-critical
Why: This is the core of the build. Every other gem exists to make this volley hit harder and more often.
Quality on Supporting Fire improves the volley; prioritize a high-level gem before luxury supports.
Secondary — Single Target
Supports: execute · impactful · fire-infusion
Keep a single-target crossbow skill bound for bosses; do not expect Supporting Fire to solo tanky targets.
Utility
Tactician's command node is what makes the volley feel like an auto-cast. Read the node before respeccing.
How Supporting Fire Works
Supporting Fire is a command skill: you designate a zone, and on cooldown the game fires a fixed pattern of crossbow shots into it. You do not aim individual projectiles. This is why it reads as 'one-button' — but the button is the command, not a continuous cast.
Because the volley is treated as a command rather than your own attack, its damage benefits from the attributes the command scales (Strength and Dexterity) and from the Tactician's command buffs. Understanding this is the difference between a weak and a strong version of the build.
Attribute Scaling Priority
- Strength — Scales the volley's physical portion and adds to the life you need to survive maps.
- Dexterity — Scales the crossbow/attack portion and improves accuracy and evasion for the mercenary base.
- Skill Level (Supporting Fire) — Higher gem level directly increases volley damage and coverage before any unique gear.
- Cooldown Recovery — Shortens the dead window between volleys; the single most felt smoothness upgrade.
- Minion / Command Scaling — Amplifies the command buff that makes the volley feel automatic.
Cooldown and Mapping Loop
The loop is: enter the pack → command Supporting Fire → the volley fires → clear stragglers with your secondary skill → wait out the cooldown while moving → repeat. The only failure mode is casting too early and staring at an empty screen.
Cooldown recovery does not make the skill free; it just tightens the loop. On a boss, you lean on your single-target crossbow skill during the cooldown rather than standing still.
Tactician Ascendancy
Pick Tactician
Tactician is mandatory because Supporting Fire is exclusive to it. The command node is the key payoff.
Command Buff Node
Allocate the node that turns the volley into an auto-feeling command. Confirm the exact node name against the current client before respeccing.
Passive Tree
Attribute Clusters
Path through Strength and Dexterity notables that also give life or accuracy. Avoid spending points on attributes you already cap from gear.
Cooldown / Skill Effect
Grab cooldown recovery and skill-effect-duration notables to tighten the volley loop and widen coverage.
Gear and Stat Priorities
Weapon
Required
- Added Physical / Fire Damage — Directly increases every arrow in the volley.
Recommended
- Attack Speed — Tightens the practical loop between casts.
- A crossbow with added physical/fire damage and attack speed. The volley benefits from flat added damage.
Flat added damage and attack speed matter more than crit early on.
Body Armour
Required
- Life — Survival floor for maps.
- Resistances — Mandatory to avoid one-shots.
- Life and resistances first; an armour/evasion base that also gives attributes is ideal.
Cap resistances before chasing damage mods.
Helmet
Recommended
- Strength / Dexterity — Offloads attribute requirements from the tree.
- Life, attributes, and a socket for command-buff supports.
Attributes here free passive points.
Belt
Luxury
- Attribute % — Scales both damage and life from attributes.
- Life, attributes, and resistances. A belt with attribute % can be a big damage lever.
Attribute % belts double as damage and survivability.
Jewels
Optional
- Str/Dex + Life — Closes attribute gaps efficiently.
- Jewels that grant Strength/Dexterity and life. A Timeless or attribute jewel can push the build over a threshold.
Use jewels to fix attribute shortfalls, not to add tiny damage.
Upgrade Priority
1 — Gem Level
A 20/+ quality Supporting Fire is the largest single jump. Do this before any unique.
2 — Cooldown Recovery
Tighten the loop so mapping feels one-button.
3 — Attribute Gear
High Strength/Dexterity gear with life pushes both damage and survivability.
4 — Luxury Uniques
Only after the core loop is smooth. Do not buy uniques to fix a broken foundation.
Defensive Layers
The build survives on life, resistances, and the fact that you are not standing still aiming. Because the volley is a command, you keep moving during the cooldown, which naturally dodges more.
Do not neglect chaos resistance and a life flask with recovery. The single biggest death cause is skipping defenses to chase attributes — once attributes are met from gear, redirect that budget into life and resistances.
Community Questions
Player reports are experience, not verified mechanics. Confirm exact scaling against the in-game tooltip.
guide · Editorial paraphrase
Most players report the volley feels great in maps but stalls on tanky rares; they swap to a single-target crossbow skill for bosses.
Why is my boss damage low?
Single-target DPS ↗reddit · Editorial paraphrase
Community consensus is that you want the dead window short enough that you are casting the command roughly on pack entry, not staring at cooldown.
How much cooldown recovery is enough?
Cooldown feel ↗forum · Editorial paraphrase
Both scale the volley; players advise not to dump everything into one attribute because the command uses both for different portions.
Does Strength or Dexterity scale it more?
Attribute weighting ↗Troubleshooting
Volley feels weak in maps
- Check gem level and whether Strength/Dexterity are actually allocated. A low gem is the usual culprit.
Long empty windows
- Invest in cooldown recovery and stop casting the command the instant it is up if mobs are already dead.
Dying to bosses
- You are likely skipping defenses for attributes. Redirect budget to life and resistances once attributes are met.
FAQ
Can other classes use Supporting Fire?
No. It is flagged Tactician-exclusive, so only a Mercenary who ascends Tactician can use it.
Is this a true one-button build for all content?
For mapping, yes — the volley does the work. For bosses, you still use a single-target crossbow skill during the cooldown.
When do I transition from a normal crossbow?
As soon as Tactician and Supporting Fire are available. Before that, level with any crossbow skill.
What is the fifth support socket worth?
A high-value support (e.g. Pinpoint Critical) beats a low-value one. Prioritize gem level and cooldown first.
