QUICK ANSWER

Direct answers

What is Runes of Aldur in 0.5?

The league mechanic shipped with 0.5.0 ('Return of the Ancients'). Every zone can contain Ezomyte Remnants - click one, complete its rune recipe, then kill the empowered monsters it spawns to claim Verisium, currency, Runes, Alloys and Logbooks. Patch 0.5.4 (June 24, 2026) added a dedicated Expedition Atlas Passive Tree and the Liquid Verisium currency.

When do I unlock Runesmithing?

You first pick up Verisium under the Tree of Souls in Act 1, and Runesmithing unlocks after you save Farrow in Clearfell. Unique-base upgrades open up around Act 3. The Grand Expedition endgame layer unlocks once you push the Expedition questline in the Atlas.

What is the safest way to start?

Run 1-2 Rune remnants while leveling for steady Verisium, and only stack 4+ Runes once your build comfortably clears empowered monster packs. Do not reroll with Liquid Verisium until you have a real surplus.

What is Runic Ward?

A second health pool from Verisium Runeforging on armour. It activates the moment your Life drops to 1, soaks the otherwise-lethal hit, and self-regenerates (roughly 5% per second). You still die if both Life and Ward hit 0.

PROGRESSION STEPS

Campaign unlock route

  1. Act 1 - meet Farrow

Pick up Verisium under the Tree of Souls in Act 1.

Save Farrow in Clearfell - this unlocks Runesmithing at the Verisium Anvil.

  2. Act 1-3 - run Remnants

Ezomyte Remnants appear in every area. Click a Remnant, pick its reward to complete the rune recipe, then kill the empowered monsters it spawns.

Spend Verisium at Farrow's anvil to add Runic Ward to armour and upgrade low-level bases.

  3. Act 3 - unique bases

Unique-base upgrades ( Runeforging on unique items) open up around Act 3 as you progress the Kalguuran questline.

  4. Endgame - Grand Expedition questline

In the Atlas, progress the Grand Expedition questline and defeat its bosses to earn Expedition Atlas Passive points for the new 0.5.4 tree.

OVERVIEW

How to read the Remnant interface

A Remnant is a pre-placed encounter in a zone. The Runeshape Recipes list shows the Runes you have loaded for that encounter and what each one adds. Each Rune contributes a reward (more Verisium, a Logbook chance, Alloys, Soul Cores) and a danger (denser or empowered monster packs).

Clicking a Remnant arms its explosive line. Detonating it reveals chests and wakes the guarded monsters. More Runes means more reward and more danger - the recipe board below summarises the trade-off.

Patch 0.5.4 changed propagation: a Remnant now randomly chooses which Rune slot propagates to further monsters, and the game highlights the Rune that will propagate when you complete the Remnant. Plan around the highlighted Rune, not a fixed one.

  • Reward types: Verisium, Logbooks (Grand Expedition access), Alloys (higher-tier Runeforging), Soul Cores (socketable in martial weapons), and general currency.
  • Danger types: extra monster packs, Rare/ Magic monster buffs, and Monster Rarity scaling with your Expedition modifiers.
  • Higher Rune counts raise both yield and risk - there is no free lunch.
  • The propagating Rune is highlighted in the Runeshape Recipes list; watch it before you detonate.

RECIPE BOARD

Remnant recipe board

Runes are the building blocks of a Remnant. Pick fewer for safety, more for yield. Exact Rune names and percentages should be re-confirmed against the live 0.5.4 client; the archetypes below are stable.

可用 Rune

Verisium Rune

Guarantees Verisium drops from the unearthed monsters - the core Runeforging fuel.

Empowered monster packs are denser and hit harder.Raw Verisium, occasionally Exceptional Verisium (the rarer, higher-tier grade).

Logbook Rune

Adds a chance for Expedition Logbooks to drop, opening the Grand Expedition.

Higher monster count and a tougher final encounter.Logbook (Grand Expedition access) and bonus currency.

Alloy Rune

Drops Alloys used in higher-tier Runeforging and Kalguuran gem crafting.

Mixed Rare and Magic monster buffs.Alloys and Runes.

Soul Core Rune

Drops Soul Cores that socket into martial weapons for bonuses such as +15 Spirit.

Frequently pairs with Rare monsters.Soul Cores and currency.

OVERVIEW

Runic Ward and Kalguuran skills

Runic Ward is a self-regenerating buffer you add to armour at the Verisium Anvil. When your Life hits 1, Ward absorbs the otherwise-lethal hit, then refills on its own (roughly 5% per second). It is a genuine second layer - not a replacement for Life or Energy Shield - and it is what makes deeper Expedition runs survivable.

Kalguuran skill gems (23 skill and 7 support gems in the league) are crafted from Remnants and cost Runic Ward instead of Mana to use. They reward an aggressive, Ward-tolerant playstyle rather than a careful mana pool.

  • Runic Ward activates only at the lethal moment - do not treat it as a normal health pool you can chip away.
  • Kalguuran gems pull from Ward, so building Ward indirectly powers those skills.
  • Two Verisium grades exist: Verisium (stack size 1,000) and the rarer Exceptional Verisium (stack size 50) for higher-tier Runeforging.
  • New unique The Master's Reach (gloves from the Vessel of Kulemak) and the Orb of Sacrifice currency arrive from Atziri's Temple in 0.5.4.

PROGRESSION STEPS

Act 4 to Grand Expedition transition

  1. Reach the endgame Atlas

Finish the campaign and open the Atlas from the Ziggurat Refuge map device.

  2. Progress the Grand Expedition questline

Run Expedition content and complete the Grand Expedition quest steps.

Each Grand Expedition boss kill grants Expedition Atlas Passive points.

  3. Unlock the Expedition Atlas tree

Spend those points on the dedicated Expedition Atlas Passive Tree (24 nodes, 12 Notables) introduced in 0.5.4.

  4. Buy Liquid Verisium from Farrow

After allocating the 'Feeling Lucky?' node, Farrow sells Liquid Verisium in Act 4 town hubs and hideouts for 600 raw Verisium per unit.

OVERVIEW

Grand Expeditions in 0.5.4

A Grand Expedition is the larger, endgame Expedition encounter. In 0.5.4 it rolls 1-2 Expedition Map Modifiers onto the area, and three new modifiers were added: increased Runic Monster Markers, Runic Monsters are Duplicated, and the area contains additional Remnants.

Because Grand Expeditions carry modifiers, they are strictly more dangerous than a normal Remnant - run them only when your build already clears empowered packs comfortably.

  • Map modifier: Increased Runic Monster Markers - more monsters carry the rune buffs.
  • Map modifier: Runic Monsters are Duplicated - expect double the empowered count.
  • Map modifier: Area contains additional Remnants - more recipes but more danger.
  • The Endgame Map now shows an icon marking which Ocean Maps are Grand Expeditions.

CARD GRID

Community questions, answered

Common Expedition questions from Reddit and video comments, each with our analysis and a direct suggestion.

UI

Why did my recipe not appear?

Question: a player expected a specific recipe and it never showed.

Evidence: Remnants are randomised per zone; the propagating Rune is now chosen at random per completion.

Suggestion: reroll with Liquid Verisium only after you have a surplus; otherwise just run what spawns.

Mechanic

The propagating Rune differs from my plan

Question: the highlighted Rune is not the one I built around.

Evidence: 0.5.4 propagates a random Rune slot and highlights it on completion.

Suggestion: read the highlight before detonating and adapt which chests you prioritise.

Difficulty

Runic Monsters feel too strong

Question: duplicated or buffed monsters wipe the map.

Evidence: Grand Expedition modifiers add duplication and extra markers.

Suggestion: drop to a Standard (3-Rune) remnant until your build scales.

Farming

Is the Grand Expedition worth self-running?

Question: should I farm it or buy currency?

Evidence: it is the best currency farm in 0.5.4 once geared, but deadly early.

Suggestion: only self-run when comfortably clearing T15+; otherwise buy the currency you need.
