OVERVIEW
Quick summary
Patch 0.2.0, titled Dawn of the Hunt, arrived as the second major content update for Path of Exile 2 and reshaped the endgame Atlas in ways that early-access players still reference today. This article collects the historical origins of the 0.2.0 endgame systems - Azmerian Wisps, Rogue Exiles, Unique Strongboxes, the first batch of Endgame Maps, and the Twilight Reliquary Key - and explains which of those rules survive into the current 0.5.4e baseline.
Many of these systems have since been superseded. The Tablet workflow described by old Atlas guides was rewritten in 0.3.1, and later endgame overhauls in 0.4 and 0.5 changed how maps, towers, and rewards scale. Treat this page as a historical reference for what 0.2.0 actually shipped, not as a current how-to.
If you are returning after a long break, the most important takeaway is that Wisps and Rogue Exiles were introduced here and remained part of the endgame, while the specific Atlas layout, Strongbox behaviour, and Reliquary access have drifted from these original rules.
- Azmerian Wisps, 12 Rogue Exiles, and Unique Strongboxes all debuted in 0.2.0.
- 8 Endgame Maps were added in this patch.
- Twilight Reliquary Key was the original gate to the Reliquary Vault.
- Tablet and map rules from this era were later rewritten (see superseded changes).
HISTORICAL CONTEXT
Historical context: the early Atlas
Early Access, pre-0.3.1 Atlas
Compared against the current 0.5.4e endgame baseline.
When Dawn of the Hunt launched, the endgame Atlas was still in its first mature form. The 0.1.x line had established Waystones, Towers, and the first Pinnacle bosses; 0.2.0 then layered a set of roaming and map-embedded reward systems on top of that foundation. Players who had learned the 0.1 Atlas now had to account for monsters that fled, exiles that used Unique gear, and chests that could roll Unique.
This era matters because a large share of community guides, boss-kill videos, and farming route write-ups were created during 0.2.0. Many of those resources describe Atlas interactions that no longer behave the same way. Understanding the original design helps you judge whether an old guide is still usable or needs a revision pass.
The historical baseline here is the 0.5.4e client. Anything described as current in this article reflects that version, not 0.2.0. Where a 0.2.0 rule still applies, we flag it; where it was replaced, we name the patch that replaced it.
- 0.1.x built Waystones, Towers, and early Pinnacles.
- 0.2.0 added roaming and map-embedded reward systems.
- Most early Atlas guide videos date from this window.
OVERVIEW
How the 0.2.0 Atlas flowed
The 0.2.0 Atlas flow began, as before, by running Waystone maps. The new twist was that the maps themselves could contain special content that transformed a routine run into a high-value encounter. Wisps drifted across the map, Rogue Exiles patrolled with Unique gear, and Strongboxes could appear as Unique variants worth farming.
Crucially, these were not isolated boss fights. They were layered onto existing map progression, so a single Waystone could escalate from a normal clear to a reward-dense spree if you chased the right signals. This design rewarded map knowledge and spatial awareness more than raw character power.
The 8 Endgame Maps added in 0.2.0 expanded the pool of high-tier content and gave players more destinations on the Atlas. Combined with Tablets, which were then placed in Towers, they defined how a 0.2.0 farming route was built. That Tower-based Tablet workflow is covered in the superseded-changes section because it no longer exists.
- Waystone maps remained the entry point.
- Wisps, Rogue Exiles, and Unique Strongboxes layered onto map runs.
- 8 new Endgame Maps expanded the high-tier pool.
SYSTEM ORIGIN
System origin: Azmerian Wisps
Azmerian Wisps were introduced in 0.2.0 as roaming entities that flee from the player and seek out nearby monsters. When a Wisp reaches a monster, it possesses or buffs that monster, visibly upgrading it and marking it as a higher-value target.
The core loop is pursuit and escalation. You chase the Wisp, it empowers the monsters it touches, and those empowered monsters drop better rewards when slain. This created a distinctive hunt-the-glowing-thing gameplay beat that distinguished 0.2.0 map clearing from the more static 0.1 experience.
Because Wisps move and choose their hosts, they introduce randomness into reward density. A map could swing from dull to lucrative depending on which monsters the Wisps found. This unpredictability was a deliberate design goal of the system's origin.
- Wisps flee from the player and seek monsters.
- They buff possessed monsters and raise their reward tier.
- Slaying buffed monsters yields increased rewards.
- Reward density becomes map-dependent and emergent.
SYSTEM ORIGIN
System origin: Rogue Exiles
Rogue Exiles arrived in 0.2.0 as a set of twelve recurring NPC hunters, each wielding a full Unique-item loadout. Unlike random rare monsters, Rogue Exiles were designed characters with defined gear, so fighting one felt like dueling a player-built character.
Their reward design mirrored that identity: because they wore Uniques, killing them could drop those Uniques and other valuable loot. They became a sought-after encounter for players chasing specific Unique items or simply high-value farm runs.
The twelve-Exile structure gave the system room for variety across the Atlas. Different Exiles favoured different skills and gear, so players learned to recognise them and adjust tactics. This is one of the 0.2.0 systems that survived into the current baseline, though individual behaviours have been tuned in later patches.
- 12 Rogue Exiles, each with a Unique-item loadout.
- They drop rewards tied to their Unique gear.
- Recognisable, character-like fights across the Atlas.
- Survives into 0.5.4e with later tuning.
