Path of Exile 2 0.4.0 — The Last of the Druids: Druid, Fate of the Vaal, Abyss & What Still Applies in 0.5.4e

0.4.0 introduced the Druid class, Oracle and Shaman ascendancies, Talisman weapons, the Fate of the Vaal league and the buildable Atziri Temple, and moved Abyss into the core game. This page tracks what survived to 0.5.4e and which old guides are now outdated.

Classes & Ascendancies

Permanent addition

Druid, Oracle and Shaman are now base classes/ascendancies. Any pre-0.4.0 'best class' ranking is out of date.

Weapons

New archetype

Talisman weapons power Shapeshift builds. They do not behave like ordinary staves or sceptres.

Endgame / League

Revised, still present

Fate of the Vaal and the Atziri Temple survived but with the 0.4.0d/e connection and Destabilisation changes.

Core mechanic

Promoted to core

Abyss is no longer a temporary league; it appears in core maps. Old 'Abyss league only' guides are wrong.

Performance

Baseline improved

CPU-side optimizations helped dense encounters, but later 0.5.x shader work changed the bottleneck profile.

Change explorer

New

Druid class added

A nature-themed class built around Shapeshift forms (Bear, Spriggan, and others) and Primal Skills. Replaced the pre-0.4.0 'no Druid' state.

Official 0.4.0 notes
New

Oracle and Shaman ascendancies

Two Druid-specific ascendancies: Oracle leans into ward/prophecy, Shaman into elemental and summons. Each has its own ascendancy node cluster.

Official 0.4.0 notes
New

35+ Supports and 8+ Lineage Supports

Druid shipped with a large support package including Lineage Supports that only socket into Primal Skills.

Official 0.4.0 notes
New

Talisman weapons

A new weapon base that enables Shapeshift transforms. Not a reskin of staves — it has unique requirements checked by the client.

Official 0.4.0 notes
New

Fate of the Vaal league

A league where Beacons, Energy and room placement build a multi-room Atziri Temple you can fight through.

Official 0.4.0 notes
Balance

Abyss promoted to core

Abyss no longer expires as a league; Abyss nodes appear in core maps, changing old 'league-only' farming routes.

Official 0.4.0 notes
Technical

CPU-side performance pass

Optimizations for dense monster counts and projectile processing. Later 0.5.x shader work changed the bottleneck.

Official 0.4.0 notes
Fix

0.4.0i Shapeshift crit condition

Fixed the 'recently Shapeshifted' crit condition so it triggers reliably after leaving a form.

Official 0.4.0i notes

Then vs Now

Class roster

Then

Before 0.4.0 there was no Druid; nature fantasy was covered only by generic spells.

Now

Druid is a base class with Oracle and Shaman; nature builds have a dedicated tree.

Atziri Temple

Then

0.4.0 launch had fragile room connections and automatic Destabilisation that could brick a run.

Now

0.4.0d/e fixed connections and removed auto-Destabilisation; rooms warn before destabilising.

Abyss

Then

Abyss was a temporary league mechanic available only during its league.

Now

Abyss is core: Abyss nodes appear in regular maps and old league-only routes are gone.

Performance narrative

Then

0.4.0 claimed CPU-side gains as the main win for dense fights.

Now

0.5.x shader/Vulkan work changed where time is spent; re-benchmark on 0.5.4e.

Boss impact: Vaal & Temple

Atziri, the Red Queen

Final boss of the rebuilt Temple. Her mirror-split and charge patterns are unchanged in identity but the arena access rules changed via 0.4.0d.

Update Temple-access guides to the post-0.4.0d connection rules.

The Architect

Builds and defends the Temple rooms. 0.4.0e tuned its pacing after Destabilisation was removed.

Treat Architect as a pacing, not a bricking, threat in current guides.

Vaal-themed rares

Fate of the Vaal introduced Vaal-touched monsters with corrupting modifiers in Temple rooms.

Map them under Endgame/Temple content, not a separate league.

Item impact: Talisman & Vaal

Weapon base

Talisman

The Shapeshift weapon base. Requires a Druid-form build to use its transform affixes effectively.

druidshapeshiftweapon

Currency

Orb of Sacrifice

Used in Temple crafting and Vaal-corruption adjacent workflows introduced with Fate of the Vaal.

vaalcurrencycrafting

Currency

Vaal Orb

Promoted alongside the Vaal storyline; its corrupting role is consistent with pre-0.4.0 behaviour.

Returning player checklist

High

Re-learn the class roster

Druid, Oracle and Shaman did not exist before 0.4.0. Old 'top classes' lists are obsolete; start from the current class index.

High

Trust Temple guides only post-0.4.0d/e

Any video or written guide from 0.4.0 launch week describes room connections and Destabilisation that no longer exist.

Medium

Stop treating Abyss as league-only

Abyss is core now; farming routes that assumed a separate league are wrong.

Medium

Re-benchmark performance

0.4.0 CPU gains do not describe 0.5.x shader behaviour; do not repeat old FPS claims.

Low

Check Talisman weapon rules

Talisman is a transform weapon, not a staff reskin; verify weapon requirements before copying old layouts.

Community evidence

Reddit r/PathOfExile2 (0.4.0 launch week)Players reported Temple runs where rooms disconnected or destabilised mid-fight.
Half my Temple was unreachable and then the whole thing destabilised with no warning.
This matches the 0.4.0 launch connection/Destabilisation behaviour. 0.4.0d fixed connections and 0.4.0e removed auto-Destabilisation, so current runs should not see this.
Forum thread on Druid Shapeshift crits (0.4.0–0.4.0i)Bear builds reported 'recently Shapeshifted' crits not proccing after leaving form.
My crit condition never triggers after I un-bear; feels broken.
Confirmed by 0.4.0i patch notes as a fixed bug. On 0.5.4e the condition works as described, so old complaints no longer apply.
YouTube comment (Abyss core promotion)Viewers confused that Abyss appeared outside its league season.
Why am I getting Abyss in a normal map?
Correct behaviour: 0.4.0 promoted Abyss to core. Guides that say 'Abyss only during its league' are outdated.
