Quick Answer
Comet has a base cast time, and the gem's '+1 second to Total Cast Time' modifier adds to the total, not to the base — cast speed only reduces the base portion.
Casting too close to yourself makes Comet land behind you (a backstep), so keep distance or trigger it from range.
Fire Infusion makes Comet deal added Fire and creates an Infused Comet that is Cold plus Fire, not a conversion; Quality Repeat fires extra Comets without spending extra mana or infusion.
Quick Facts
- Category
- Spell / AoE / Cold
- Tagged spell, aoe, cold, delayed-impact, trigger.
- Impact
- Delayed landing at target
- Comet lands after a cast time at the targeted location.
- Fire Infusion
- Adds Fire, makes Infused Comet
- Infused Comet is Cold + Fire, not a pure conversion.
- Acquisition
- Uncut Skill Gem (Tier 8)
- High-tier gem; a late-game single-target payoff.
- Best role
- Single-target trigger spell
- Core payload for cast-on-crit and cast-on-ailment.
Requirements
No special attribute gate. Comet is a spell gem cast with mana, and it is most often used as a triggered payload rather than self-cast.
Delayed Impact and Cast Time
Comet has a base cast time. The gem modifier '+1 second to Total Cast Time' extends the total cast time; cast speed only reduces the base cast time portion, so the added second is not sped up by cast speed.
Because the landing is delayed, Comet is weak for self-cast chasing — you commit to a location and the meteor falls there after the cast completes.
This delay is exactly why triggers love Comet: the trigger fires it at the target without you manually aiming and waiting.
- Base cast time is reduced by cast speed.
- +1s Total Cast Time is added after cast-speed maths.
- The delay rewards trigger and totem usage.
Infusion Mode
Fire Infusion adds Fire damage to Comet and, when consumed, creates an Infused Comet. The Infused Comet deals Cold plus Fire — it is an added element, not a conversion of the base cold damage.
Lightning Infusion instead keeps the Lightning tagging and is consumed on the hit; the choice changes which ailments and supports you build around.
Infusion is a separate resource from mana, so an infused Comet still costs its normal mana on cast.
- Fire Infusion: Infused Comet is Cold + Fire added.
- Lightning Infusion: consumed on hit, keeps lightning tag.
- Infusion does not replace the mana cost.
Self-Cast vs Trigger vs Totem
Self-cast gives you full control of where Comet lands, but the long cast time makes it easy to interrupt and slow against moving bosses.
Trigger (cast-on-crit or cast-on-ailment) auto-drops Comet at the target after conditions are met, skipping your own cast time and interrupt risk.
Spell Totem casts Comet at range on a cadence, useful for Oracle or totem builds that want sustained single-target without standing in danger.
- Self-cast: control, but long and interruptible.
- Trigger: fast, automatic, no self cast time.
- Spell Totem: ranged sustained casting.
Hit Behaviour and Impact Radius
Comet deals its damage in an area at the impact point. The impact radius is fixed by the gem; enemies outside the radius take no hit.
If the target moves after you commit, the Comet lands at the original location and can miss — this is the main self-cast weakness against mobile bosses.
Triggered Comets land on the trigger target's current position, which avoids most whiffs.
- Impact radius is fixed by the gem.
- Moving targets can dodge a self-cast Comet.
- Triggered Comets track the target better.
Level Scaling
Higher gem levels increase Comet's base damage and area, and improve the Infused Comet payoff. Levelling the gem is the primary single-target upgrade.
Because Comet is often a triggered payload, gem level also raises the triggered damage directly without changing your trigger setup.
- More levels: more base damage and area.
- Infused Comet scales with gem level.
- Trigger damage scales with the payload gem level.
Quality
Comet Quality that grants Repeat fires an additional Comet without spending extra mana or consuming infusion again.
Repeat Comets land as extra impacts, raising single-target burst; they do not extend the cast time.
Older Quality bugs that doubled costs have been addressed in client; current Repeat is a clean extra cast.
- Repeat: extra Comet, no extra mana.
- Repeat: no extra infusion consumed.
- No extra cast time from Repeat.
Support Compatibility
Comet is a spell, so spell damage, area, cold, crit and cast-speed supports all apply. Concentrated Effect and Cold Penetration are strong for single-target.
- Cold Penetration and Concentrated Effect for boss damage.
- Critical Damage and Cast Speed for trigger setups.
- Avoid attack-only supports.
Support Loadouts
A bossing Comet uses cold and area supports. A cast-on-crit Comet leans into crit and cast-speed so the trigger fires often.
- Boss: Cold Penetration, Concentrated Effect, Area, Control.
- CoC: Critical Damage, Cast Speed, Cold Damage, Energy Retention.
- Fire Infusion: fire and ailment supports.
Skill Interactions
Comet is the classic payload for Cast on Critical Strike and Cast on Elemental Ailment. Each crit or ailment rolls a triggered Comet at the target.
Mana Tempest empowers triggered Comets cast inside the storm, and Spark often shares the same trigger economy as the screen clear.
Spell Totem lets an Oracle or totem build sustain Comet without self-casting.
- Cast on Critical Strike: primary trigger partner.
- Cast on Elemental Ailment: ailment-trigger variant.
- Mana Tempest: empowers triggered Comets.
Mapping Usage
In maps, Comet is a single-target tool. Use it on rares and bosses; let a clear spell like Spark handle the trash.
Triggered Comets auto-target the nearest eligible enemy, so you keep moving while they snipe priority targets.
- Reserve Comet for rares and boss-like enemies.
- Keep moving; the trigger does the aiming.
- Pair with a clear spell for packs.
Bossing Rotation
Against a boss, trigger Comets on every crit and time Fire Infusion bursts with staggers. Predict phase transitions so your casts land during vulnerable windows.
Self-cast Comets should be pre-aimed where the boss will be, not where it is, to avoid whiffs.
- Trigger Comets on crits for steady boss damage.
- Pre-aim self-cast at the boss's path.
- Burst Fire Infusion during staggers.
Build Usage
Comet is the signature payload for cast-on-crit Comet Infernalist and Chronomancer builds, and for Oracle totem variants.
It is a high-tier gem, so it appears in late-game single-target setups rather than league starters.
- CoC Comet Infernalist: high-budget trigger build.
- Crit Comet Disciple of Varashta: crit-focused variant.
- Oracle Totem: sustained ranged Comet.
Troubleshooting
If Comets land behind you, you are casting too close — back up or trigger from range. If they whiff a moving boss, you are self-casting; switch to a trigger.
If Repeat feels like it costs more, you are on an old client; current Repeat is free of extra mana and infusion.
- Backstep: cast from farther away.
- Whiff on move: use a trigger instead of self-cast.
- Slow self-cast: long cast time is expected.
- CoC not firing: check crit chance and trigger setup.
- Low impact: level the gem and add cold supports.
Known Issues
A common mistake is treating Fire Infusion as a conversion; it adds Fire and makes an Infused Comet that is Cold plus Fire, so cold scaling still applies.
Another is assuming cast speed removes the '+1s Total Cast Time'; only the base portion is reduced.
- Fire Infusion is added, not a conversion.
- Cast speed does not reduce the added total-cast-time second.
Community Evidence
Comet is repeatedly called one of the strongest single-target spells in 0.5 trigger threads, with debate around Infernalist versus Chronomancer hosting.
Players note the self-cast backstep as the main reason they prefer triggering Comet.
- CoC Comet is a top single-target pick in 0.5.
- Self-cast backstep pushes players to triggers.
