QUICK ANSWER
Quick answer
The reveal happens on the Atlas at the Ocean Edge node, not in the old standalone Logbook map UI and not via a Realmgate.
Since 0.5.2 every revealed Ocean section guarantees at least one Grand Expedition; optionally activate a Saga in your bag first to modify the reveal.
Revealing Ocean Biome sections to farm Grand Expeditions, runes, relics, Sagas, and to reach the Expedition pinnacle boss Olroth, Origin of the Fall.
The Grand Expedition questline is progressed to Ruins of Kingsmarch, the Logbook is in your main inventory, and the Ocean Edge node is revealed on the Atlas.
Treating this like the old single-map Logbook or the Realmgate flow, and expecting Runic Splinters to do anything - Runic Splinters are disabled in 0.5.

ACQUISITION
How to get an Expedition Logbook
Logbooks are an endgame Expedition drop, not something you craft. There are three reliable ways to obtain one.
Runic Monsters in Expedition encounters
Runic Monsters are the double red-flagpole enemies revealed by your explosives during an Expedition in Tier 10+ maps. The Logbook's level equals the map's Area Level, so a Tier 15 Waystone yields a level-79 Logbook (the threshold where the pinnacle boss Olroth can spawn). Corrupted or Irradiated maps add +1/+2 Area Level.
Styrn, Fallen Knight of Aldur
Since 0.5.3, killing Styrn in the Tomb of the Fallen Knight sub-area always drops an Expedition Logbook. This is the most reliable, repeatable source and lets a level-79 mapping loop sustain itself on free Logbooks.
Currency Exchange
Logbooks and artifacts trade on the Currency Exchange in the 'Expedition Coinage & Artifacts' row, which fills automatically. You can buy a stack and jump straight into running them without farming drops.
Player trade
Because Logbooks are tradeable, you can also buy them directly from other players. Prices shift every league, so verify the live rate before committing a large stash.
USE FLOW
Where and how to use a Logbook
Progress The Grand Expedition questline
Reach Ruins of Kingsmarch in the southeast of the Atlas during The Grand Expedition questline. The Ocean Edge reveal button does not appear until this questline is progressed.
Keep the Logbook in your main inventory
The reveal consumes the Logbook from your person. It will not trigger from a stash, the Currency Exchange, or an Extra Inventory tab.
Open the Atlas and find the Ocean Edge node
Once the questline is progressed and the Ocean Edge is revealed, that node shows a boat-shaped reveal button. This is the current 0.5 entry point - not the old standalone Logbook map or a Realmgate.
Trigger the reveal
Interact with the Ocean Edge button to consume the Logbook. A section of ocean fog is cleared, revealing an Ocean Biome section with a Grand Expedition and regular Expedition encounters.
Optionally activate a Saga first
Right-click a Saga in your bag before revealing to modify the revealed biome (for example, Aldur's Saga can improve Verisium Remnants). The Saga is a separate investment layer from the Logbook itself.
Enter the Grand Expedition
Run the revealed maps: place explosive chains, wake Runic Monsters, and collect Remnant rewards. Higher-level Logbooks (level 79) give better modifier rolls and a chance at Olroth.
Before 0.5, a Logbook opened a single self-contained Expedition map; you carried it to a Logbook UI and it did not connect to a persistent ocean region.
In 0.5 the same item is consumed on the Atlas Ocean Edge to permanently reveal an Ocean Biome section that contains a Grand Expedition plus standard Expedition encounters.
The 0.5 flow ties Logbooks into the Atlas fog and the Grand Expedition questline rather than a one-off map.
OVERVIEW
Current 0.5 flow vs the legacy Logbook
In the current 0.5 (Runes of Aldur) endgame, an Expedition Logbook is consumed at the Atlas Ocean Edge to reveal an Ocean Biome section. That section always contains at least one Grand Expedition (since 0.5.2) alongside regular Expedition encounters, and it persists as part of your Atlas as you clear fog.
Older descriptions of Expedition access no longer apply. The pre-0.5 'single Logbook map' flow - where a Logbook simply opened one isolated Expedition map - has been replaced by the Atlas Ocean Biome system. Runic Splinters, which some older guides mention as an Expedition currency, are disabled in 0.5 and serve only as a historical reference. Likewise, any instruction to place a Logbook into a Realmgate is outdated for the current version.
Treat the boat-shaped Ocean Edge reveal button as the only current 0.5 entry point. If a guide tells you to open the Logbook through a hideout NPC or a Realmgate, it is describing legacy or conflicting information and should not be followed for 0.5.
- Current 0.5: Logbook consumed at Atlas Ocean Edge -> reveals Ocean Biome section with a Grand Expedition.
- Legacy: single self-contained Logbook map opened via old UI - no longer the 0.5 flow.
- Runic Splinters: disabled in 0.5, historical only.
- Realmgate instructions for Logbooks: outdated, do not follow for 0.5.
VALID TARGET MATRIX
What works in 0.5 vs what does not
Expedition Logbooks only function through the current 0.5 Atlas Ocean Edge flow. The older Expedition access items no longer function.
| Target | Expedition Logbook | Runic Splinter (legacy) | Old Logbook Map (legacy) | Note |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Usable in 0.5 | Yes | No | No | Only the current item functions |
| Reveals Ocean Biome | Yes | Disabled | No | Current item reveals the section |
| Tradeable | Yes | No | No | Only the current item trades |
PRE-USE CHECKLIST
Pre-use checklist
| Done | Check | Why it matters | Quick fix |
|---|---|---|---|
| Questline progressed Confirm The Grand Expedition questline has reached Ruins of Kingsmarch in the southeast Atlas. | The Ocean Edge reveal button only appears after this questline is progressed. | Run Expedition maps and follow the quest until Ruins of Kingsmarch is unlocked. | |
| Logbook in main inventory The Logbook must be on your character, not in a stash or Extra Inventory tab. | The reveal consumes the item from your person. | Move the Logbook into your main bag before opening the Atlas. | |
| Right Logbook level for your goal If you want Olroth, use a level-79 Logbook (Tier 15 Waystone, or T13/T14 with Corrupted/Irradiated). | Olroth only spawns in high-level Logbooks; lower levels cap your reward ceiling. | Run higher-tier maps or use +Area Level modifiers before farming. | |
| Saga prepared (optional) If you plan to modify the reveal, right-click the Saga to activate it before triggering the Ocean Edge button. | A Saga is a separate investment layer and only applies if active when you reveal. | Activate the Saga first; do not waste it on a weak reveal. |
OUTCOME ANALYSIS
Outcomes by goal
| Scenario | Benefit | Risk | Audience | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| SSF Expedition farmer | Reveals a Grand Expedition for artifact currency, runes and relics | Low - self-sustaining via Styrn | Any build | Low Core income engine once the questline is open |
| Olroth hunter | Level-79 Logbooks can spawn Olroth, Origin of the Fall | Medium - Olroth is not guaranteed and the map is harder | Bossers | Medium Use level-79 Logbooks; expect roughly a 20% spawn chance (pending in-game verification) |
| Saga investor | Aldur's Saga can improve Verisium Remnants in the reveal | Medium - Sagas are valuable and wasted on weak reveals | Currency-focused players | Medium Save strong Sagas for high-value Ocean sections |
| Casual first reveal | Regular Expedition encounters and a gentle intro to the Ocean | Low | New endgame players | Low Fine as a one-off; invest more once the system is understood |
RISK ANALYSIS
Risk analysis
| Scenario | Gain | Loss | Risk | Recommendation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Low-level Logbook for Olroth | A cheap reveal | Caps your Logbook level, blocking Olroth and the best rolls | Low | Use Tier 15 (or +Area Level) maps when hunting the pinnacle boss. |
| Wasting Aldur's Saga on a weak reveal | Minor modifier bump | A ~25-divine Saga spent where it barely matters | Medium | Reserve strong Sagas for Ocean sections with multiple Grand Expedition maps. |
| Death inside a Grand Expedition | Progress toward clearing the section | Lost map progress and any uncollected Remnant rewards in that run | Medium | Do not over-invest currency until your build can clear the revealed maps safely. |
| Buying overpriced Logbooks | Instant access without farming | Overpaying relative to the live market | Medium | Check the current Exchange rate before buying a large stack. |
COMMUNITY EVIDENCE
Community questions, direct answers
I have a Logbook and a Saga - why can't I use it?
A player had both items but saw no way to activate the Logbook.
The reveal is gated by two things the player may have missed: The Grand Expedition questline must be progressed to Ruins of Kingsmarch, and the Logbook must be in the main inventory when the Atlas Ocean Edge node is viewed. A Saga is a separate modifier layer, not the trigger.
Progress the questline, keep the Logbook in your bag, then use the Ocean Edge reveal button on the Atlas.
I run lots of Expeditions in SSF but no Logbook drops - am I killing the wrong monster?
Players confuse ordinary Expedition monsters with the actual Logbook source.
Logbooks drop from Runic Monsters (the double red-flagpole enemies), not from every Expedition kill, and only in Tier 10+ maps. Below T10 you will not see Logbook drops. Styrn is the guaranteed fallback source.
Target Runic Monsters in T10+ maps, or kill Styrn, Fallen Knight of Aldur, for a guaranteed Logbook.
After the first Logbook, how does the boat button come back?
Players finish the quest Logbook and cannot find a second reveal button.
Each Logbook is consumed to reveal one Ocean section. The button reappears at the next Ocean Edge node as you clear fog and progress the questline; it is not a one-time quest object.
Hold another Logbook in your bag and interact with the next revealed Ocean Edge node on the Atlas.

Problems and direct answers
The Ocean Edge reveal button does not appear
Direct answer: The button only shows after The Grand Expedition questline is progressed to Ruins of Kingsmarch and the Ocean Edge node is revealed. The Logbook must also be in your main inventory.
- Confirm questline progress, that the Logbook is in your bag (not stash), and that you are viewing the correct Ocean Edge node on the Atlas.
No Logbook drops in SSF
Direct answer: Logbooks only drop from Runic Monsters in Tier 10+ maps, or guaranteed from Styrn. Ordinary Expedition kills below T10 will not drop them.
- Run T10+ maps, target the double red-flagpole Runic Monsters, or kill Styrn in the Tomb of the Fallen Knight.
I used a Logbook but saw no Grand Expedition
Direct answer: Since 0.5.2 every revealed Ocean section guarantees at least one Grand Expedition. If you only saw regular encounters, you may have triggered a normal map node rather than the Ocean Edge reveal.
- Use the Ocean Edge boat button on the Atlas, not any old Logbook map UI, and confirm the section revealed contains the Grand Expedition marker.
