QUICK ANSWER
Quick answer
The bonuses are added on top of everything else and scale linearly with your Strength, Dexterity and Intelligence totals, so the more you stack, the stronger the staff becomes.
It drops anywhere in the game and can be created with an Orb of Chance, so it is far easier to obtain than boss-locked uniques like Hand of Wisdom and Action.
The 0.2.0 rebalance changed the per-attribute rates and auto-applied them to existing items, so there is no tradeable 'legacy' version with the old stronger scaling.
You run a quarterstaff attack build that stacks 200+ Strength (and ideally Dexterity and Intelligence) and wants Weapon Damage % from the weapon itself.
You use spells, an off-hand weapon, or a build where attributes stay low — the staff's low base damage and weapon-only scaling give little benefit.
Any monster, chest or Strongbox anywhere in the game, or an Orb of Chance on a white Long Quarterstaff. Not boss-gated.
QUICK FACTS
Quick facts
- Item type
- Unique quarterstaff (Long Quarterstaff)
- Current base is Long Quarterstaff; the staff's own base damage is 9 to 18 physical.
- Required level
- 4 (9 Dex)
- Extremely low requirement — usable from very early, but its power comes from stacked attributes, not level.
- Core mod 1
- 10% increased Weapon Damage per 10 Strength
- Global to weapon hits; does not apply to unarmed attacks or totems using their own weapon.
- Core mod 2
- 1% increased Attack Speed per 10 Dexterity
- Stacks with other attack speed sources.
- Core mod 3
- 1% increased Area of Effect for Attacks per 10 Intelligence
- Applies to attack Area of Effect (e.g. Charged Staff, Tempest Flurry sweeps).
- Implicit
- 16% increased Melee Strike Range with this weapon
- Fixed; not a per-attribute mod.
- Drop source
- Drops anywhere; Orb of Chance
- Not drop-restricted; can be chanced from a white Long Quarterstaff.
- Tradeable
- Yes (player market)
- Because it can be chanced and drops anywhere, supply is high and price is usually modest.

OVERVIEW
How Pillar of the Caged God works
Pillar of the Caged God is a unique Long Quarterstaff whose entire value is converting your attribute totals into weapon power. It has three scaling modifiers tied to the three core attributes: Strength grants increased Weapon Damage, Dexterity grants increased Attack Speed, and Intelligence grants increased Area of Effect for Attacks. Each modifier triggers per 10 of its attribute.
All three bonuses are explicitly tied to attacks and hits made with the weapon. 'Weapon Damage' means damage with hits using your weapon — it does not apply to unarmed attacks (including Concoctions) or attacks from totems that use their own weapons (for example Shockwave Totem). The Attack Speed and Area of Effect mods are also attack-scoped. So the staff rewards attack-based quarterstaff skills, not spells.
Worked example: at 500 Strength, 500 Dexterity and 500 Intelligence, Strength stacks = 500 / 10 = 50, giving +500% increased Weapon Damage; Dexterity stacks = 50, giving +50% increased Attack Speed; Intelligence stacks = 50, giving +50% increased Area of Effect for Attacks. Because these are additive percentage multipliers, the staff becomes dramatically stronger the more you stack — a level-4 staff can outscale endgame rares once attributes climb into the hundreds.
Crucially, the staff itself gives no Accuracy, no Life or Energy Shield, no resistances and no resource. You still need to land hits (Accuracy), survive (defenses) and solve mana or spirit elsewhere. The natural wielder is a quarterstaff class such as Monk, or for maximum attribute efficiency a Gemling Legionnaire Mercenary that can convert attribute nodes and scale all three. A common companion is the all-attribute amulet (Astramentis) and the attribute-scaling glove Hand of Wisdom and Action, which feed the same attributes.
- Strength -> increased Weapon Damage (10% per 10 Str).
- Dexterity -> increased Attack Speed (1% per 10 Dex).
- Intelligence -> increased Area of Effect for Attacks (1% per 10 Int).
- Weapon-only: unarmed attacks and totem-own-weapon hits do not benefit.
- No inherent defense, Accuracy or resource — the build must supply those.
DATA TABLE
Attribute scaling table
Current (post-0.2.0) scaling at representative attribute breakpoints, assuming equal Str / Dex / Int. The 'Legacy' column shows pre-0.2.0 values only to illustrate the nerf gap — that scaling auto-applied to all items and no longer exists in-game.
| Attributes (Str / Dex / Int) | Increased Weapon Damage | Increased Attack Speed | Increased AoE (Attacks) | Legacy (pre-0.2.0) equivalent |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 100 / 100 / 100 | +100% | +10% | +10% | Legacy: +200% WD, +20% AS, +20% AoE |
| 300 / 300 / 300 | +300% | +30% | +30% | Legacy: +600% WD, +60% AS, +60% AoE |
| 500 / 500 / 500 | +500% | +50% | +50% | Legacy: +1000% WD, +100% AS, +100% AoE |
| 800 / 800 / 800 | +800% | +80% | +80% | Legacy: +1600% WD, +160% AS, +160% AoE |
| 1000 / 1000 / 1000 | +1000% | +100% | +100% | Legacy: +2000% WD, +200% AS, +200% AoE |
Legacy values are shown for comparison only. Because the 0.2.0 rebalance auto-applied, every in-game Pillar uses the current (left) numbers. Weapon Damage applies to weapon hits only.
OUTCOME ANALYSIS
Outcomes by attribute investment
| Scenario | Benefit | Risk | Audience | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Low attributes (<150 Str) | Small Weapon Damage % and a low base 9 to 18; 16% strike range implicit | Low damage return; base damage is poor versus Rare staves | Non-stackers, early characters | Low Use a Rare quarterstaff with flat damage + resists until you stack attributes. |
| Mid attributes (200 to 400 Str, some Dex/Int) | +200 to 400% WD and +20 to 40% AS/AoE; strong mapping damage | Medium (squishy until defenses sorted) | Transitioning attribute stackers | Medium Equip Pillar once Strength crosses ~200; it now beats most Rare quarterstaves for damage. |
| High attributes (600+ Str, 500+ Dex/Int) | +600 to 1000% WD, +60 to 100% AS/AoE; among the best Weapon Damage % sources | Medium (glass-cannon; needs CI/chaos res and mana sustain) | Endgame attribute stackers | High Keep Pillar; pair with Hand of Wisdom and Action and an all-attribute amulet. |
| Spell-only build | None from the scaling mods | High (wasted unique slot) | Casters | High Do not use Pillar; the bonuses are attack/weapon-scoped, not spell-scoped. |
DATA TABLE
Leveling and attribute timeline
Leveling and attribute timeline — when Pillar becomes worth equipping. Assumes the rest of the build already supplies Accuracy, defenses and resource.
| Level / Attributes | Context | Pillar contribution | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|
| Level 4, base attributes | First unique quarterstaff available at L4; base damage 9 to 18; attribute mods barely register | Negligible bonus; implicit 16% strike range only | Hold — a Rare staff is better until you stack |
| Level ~30 to 40, 100 to 200 Str | Strength stacking begins on a Gemling / attribute tree | +100 to 200% Weapon Damage | Equip Pillar once Str crosses ~150 |
| Level 60+, 300 to 500 Str | Midgame tri-attribute stacking | +300 to 500% WD, +30 to 50% AS/AoE | Core weapon for the attribute stacker |
| Endgame, 800 to 1000+ Str | Max scaling with all-attribute amulet + jewels | +800 to 1000% WD, +80 to 100% AS/AoE | Keep; pillar of the build alongside HOWA |
Pillar is usable from Level 4 but only becomes damage-positive once attributes are stacked; the low requirement is convenience, not power.
BUILD USAGE
Build usage
Pillar is an enabler weapon, not a standalone build. The four contexts below show where it fits, what you need alongside it, what it does not provide, and which skills it cannot support.
Early Attribute Stacker (campaign to early maps)
Equip at Level 4 once you meet 9 Dex. Pair with any quarterstaff attack skill (for example Charged Staff, Tempest Flurry, Flicker Strike). Entry: farm it anywhere or chance a white Long Quarterstaff. Missing defense: the staff's base is low-evasion and gives no resists or Life, so defenses must come from the rest of the gear. Unsupported: spells and unarmed attacks.
Midgame Tri-Attribute Transition (maps)
Around 200 to 400 Strength with Dexterity and Intelligence also climbing and resists capped. Keep Pillar as the core weapon; free suffixes for attributes because defenses are solved elsewhere. Missing defense: still no innate defense from the staff. Unsupported: spells.
Endgame Attribute Stacker (Gemling Legionnaire)
500 to 1000 Strength typical (with all-attribute amulet + Ingenuity + attribute jewels), plus high Dex/Int. Runs Pillar (weapon) + Hand of Wisdom and Action (gloves) + all-attribute amulet. Gemling Legionnaire's Adaptive Capability rerolls attribute nodes to all-Strength for maximum Weapon Damage. Missing defense: glass-cannon; needs CI/chaos res and mana sustain. Unsupported: spells / totem-own-weapon hits.
Second-Weapon-Set Enabler
Some crossbow or attack builds keep Pillar on the second weapon set purely for its Weapon Damage % and swap in for melee-range bursts (for example Tempest Flurry). The per-attribute scaling still applies while equipped. Missing: it occupies the weapon slot, so the main set must be a different weapon.
ALTERNATIVES
Alternatives
Against a well-rolled Rare Long Quarterstaff, the difference is scaling. A Rare staff can give a fixed flat physical roll, a fixed increased Attack Speed roll, plus resistances, Life or ES and Accuracy. Pillar instead makes its Weapon Damage %, Attack Speed and Area of Effect grow with your attributes — so the more Str/Dex/Int you stack, the more each mod is worth. If your build already stacks 300+ Strength, Pillar almost always beats a Rare staff for damage; if you are not attribute-stacking (low Str), a Rare staff with flat damage + resists + Life is usually better because Pillar's scaling is wasted and its base damage is low.
No other unique quarterstaff currently provides per-attribute Weapon Damage scaling, so Pillar is the only 'attribute-scaling weapon' in 0.5. Related uniques fill different roles: Hand of Wisdom and Action (gloves) adds flat Lightning (Int) and Attack Speed (Dex) and is complementary, not an alternative — the standard attribute stacker runs both. Astramentis (amulet) supplies the bulk attributes that feed Pillar's multipliers. Catalysts and Runes / Soul Cores can add Dexterity or attack-speed to compound the multipliers.
- Rare quarterstaves: fixed flat + defenses; better when attributes are low.
- Pillar: scaling Weapon Damage % + AS + AoE; better when attributes are high.
- Hand of Wisdom and Action: complementary glove, not an alternative.
- Astramentis / Catalysts / Runes: feed the same attributes.
ACQUISITION
Acquisition
There is no boss gate. You either farm it from any drop source, chance it, or buy it on the player market.
Drop anywhere
Pillar of the Caged God can drop from any monster, chest or Strongbox anywhere in the game (campaign, maps, endgame). It is not tied to a specific boss or region.
Orb of Chance
Using an Orb of Chance on a white Long Quarterstaff can produce Pillar of the Caged God. Because it is chancable and drops anywhere, supply is healthy and the unique is relatively affordable.
Player Trade
Buy one on the official trade site. Price tracks league economy; because it is common, a roll is usually far cheaper than boss-gated uniques. Check the base type (Long Quarterstaff) and that it is the current post-0.2.0 version.
USE / SELL / HOLD
Use, sell, or hold
Best when the build already supplies Accuracy, defenses and resource sustain.
Pairs strongly with Hand of Wisdom and Action and an all-attribute amulet.
RISK ANALYSIS
Risk and failure cost
| Scenario | Gain | Loss | Risk | Recommendation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Equip Pillar but ignore defenses | Strong Weapon Damage % scaling | You die constantly — the staff gives no Life/ES/resists | High | Only equip once resists are capped and you have a defensive layer (Life/ES/CI). |
| Use Pillar on a spell build | None | Wasted unique weapon slot | Medium | Do not — the mods are weapon/attack-scoped and do not apply to spells. |
| Buy a legacy-priced Pillar expecting old scaling | None extra | Overpay; the old stronger scaling no longer exists | Medium | Check the modifier text: current items are 10% WD per 10 Str, 1% AS per 10 Dex, 1% AoE per 10 Int. Legacy scaling was auto-nerfed. |
| Low attribute total (<150 Str) | Small Weapon Damage % | No defense and weak damage versus a Rare staff | Low | Use a Rare quarterstaff with flat damage + resists + Life instead. |
COMMUNITY EVIDENCE
Community evidence
Does Pillar of the Caged God require a specific class?
A popular Gemling Legionnaire Flicker Strike build is built entirely around the staff.
The staff has no class requirement (only Level 4, 9 Dex). Its attribute scaling is class-agnostic, but Gemling Legionnaire's Adaptive Capability and Enhanced Effectiveness make stacking all-Strength especially efficient.
Any class can equip it; the strongest users convert attribute nodes to all-Strength (for example Gemling Legionnaire) or stack all three attributes.
Can Pillar be used on a second weapon set?
A Tempest Shockburst Gemling build keeps Pillar as the second weapon for melee-range bursts.
Because the per-attribute bonuses apply while equipped, swapping to Pillar on weapon set 2 grants its Weapon Damage % during that set's attacks. The rest of the build can stay crossbow.
Yes — Pillar works on a secondary weapon set; its scaling applies whenever it is the equipped weapon.
Is the Weapon Damage scaling global or weapon-only?
A reader asked whether the 10% per 10 Strength applies to all damage.
PoE2Wiki states 'Weapon Damage' refers to damage with hits using your weapon. It does not apply to unarmed attacks (including Concoctions) or attacks from totems that use their own weapons.
Weapon-only. Unarmed attacks and totem-own-weapon hits do not receive the Weapon Damage %.
Is the old pre-0.2.0 Pillar with 2% per attribute still obtainable?
A player saw older guides quoting stronger stats and wondered if those items still drop.
The 0.2.0 rebalance changed the rates and the patch note states the per-attribute changes affect existing items. So the old scaling was automatically converted on every owned Pillar.
No. Every in-game Pillar now uses 10% WD per 10 Str, 1% AS per 10 Dex, 1% AoE per 10 Int. Only the base-type name differs; the old stronger rates are gone. A Divine Orb only affects value ranges that are rolled — none of these per-attribute mods are rolled ranges.
PROBLEMS & DIRECT ANSWERS
Problems and direct answers
My Pillar build does almost no damage
Direct answer: Your Strength is likely too low. Below ~200 Str the Weapon Damage % is small and the base is only 9 to 18. Stack Strength (and Dex/Int for AS/AoE) — at 500 Str the staff alone adds +500% Weapon Damage.
- Check total Strength, Dexterity and Intelligence on the character sheet.
- Confirm your skill is an attack with a quarterstaff, not a spell.
- Verify you have other increased Weapon/Attack Damage multipliers to amplify the %.
I keep dying with Pillar equipped
Direct answer: Pillar provides no Life, Energy Shield, resistances or Accuracy. The staff is an offensive enabler only; your defenses must come from the rest of the gear and the passive tree.
- Cap elemental resistances (75%).
- Add a defensive layer (Life/ES/CI) and Accuracy from other slots.
- Do not treat Pillar as a defensive unique.
My spells do not get the bonuses
Direct answer: Correct — the mods are weapon/attack-scoped. Spell hits do not receive the Weapon Damage %, Attack Speed or Area of Effect.
- Switch to a quarterstaff attack skill, or use a different unique for spell builds.
Chance Orb did not produce Pillar
Direct answer: Pillar IS in the Chance Orb pool for Long Quarterstaff, so a failed attempt is just an unlucky roll. Try again or farm a drop instead.
- Use an Orb of Chance on a white Long Quarterstaff.
- Or farm any monster/chest — it drops anywhere.

PATCH HISTORY
Patch history and current vs legacy
Base type Long Quarterstaff (Physical 9 to 18, Crit 10%, APS 1.40). Implicit 16% increased Melee Strike Range. Mods: 10% increased Weapon Damage per 10 Strength, 1% increased Attack Speed per 10 Dexterity, 1% increased Area of Effect for Attacks per 10 Intelligence.
Drops anywhere; can be chanced.
Legacy rates were stronger: 10% increased Weapon Damage per 5 Strength (double), 2% increased Attack Speed per 10 Dexterity, 2% increased Area of Effect per 10 Intelligence.
Divine Orb behavior: the 0.2.0 patch note says the per-attribute changes affect existing items automatically, while a Divine Orb can obtain the remaining value changes. Since none of Pillar's per-attribute mods are rolled ranges, a Divine Orb changes nothing about them.
What auto-applies versus new-only: the scaling rates auto-applied to old items; base-type and implicit were unchanged. Thus there is no tradeable legacy Pillar with old scaling — every in-game Pillar uses current rates.
How Trade identifies the version: by modifier text. '10% per 10 Strength' = current; '10% per 5 Strength' = legacy (no longer obtainable).
Rebalanced Pillar: now 10% increased Weapon Damage per 10 Strength (previously per 5), 1% increased Attack Speed per 10 Dexterity (previously 2%), 1% increased Area of Effect per 10 Intelligence (previously 2%). The per-attribute changes affect existing items; a Divine Orb can obtain remaining value changes.
