OVERVIEW
Quick summary
This is a system-origin article, not a build guide. It explains where the Huntress class, the five 0.2.0 ascendancies, and the Spear and Buckler item classes came from, and which of those facts still hold in client 0.5.4e. If you want a playable setup, pair this page with the linked builds such as Lightning Spear Amazon or Glacial Lance Ritualist.
0.2.0 Dawn of the Hunt shipped the Huntress as the first new base class of Early Access, and at the same time delivered five ascendancies across four existing classes: Amazon and Ritualist for the Huntress, Smith of Kitava for the Warrior, Tactician for the Mercenary, and Lich for the Witch. It also introduced Spears and Bucklers as entirely new item classes that any class can equip.
Two ideas trip up returning players. First, a Spear build does not have to be a Huntress; Spears are a universal weapon class. Second, Bucklers are a distinct off-hand item class, not the same as Shields, and like Spears they are usable by any class. Both points matter when you set up weapon-set passives, which is why this article links the weapon-set-passive-points guide.
- Huntress + five new ascendancies all originated in 0.2.0
- Spears and Bucklers are universal item classes, not Huntress-locked
- Old build videos may show node numbers that no longer match the current tree
- Pair with linked builds and the weapon-set passive guide for a usable setup
SYSTEM ORIGIN
System origin: Huntress & new ascendancies
The Huntress and her five co-shipped ascendancies were introduced together in the 0.2.0 Dawn of the Hunt content update. The class was designed around martial spear combat and a buckler off-hand, which is why the Spear and Buckler item classes landed in the same patch. The five ascendancies were not scattered across later patches; they arrived as a single batch in 0.2.0, three for entirely new class identity and two extending existing classes.
Amazon and Ritualist are the two Huntress-specific ascendancies, giving the class both a physical/crit spear identity and a bleed/ritual identity. The other three extend classes that already existed: Smith of Kitava for the Warrior, Tactician for the Mercenary, and Lich for the Witch. That split matters because it means 0.2.0 changed not just one class but the ascendancy identity of four base classes at once.
Because the whole layer shipped in one patch, any guide or video made before 0.2.0 cannot reference these ascendancies at all. After 0.2.0 they became permanent fixtures of the class roster, and later patches (0.3, 0.5) have tuned them but have not removed them. Their current node layouts, however, should be checked against the live tree rather than old footage.
- Huntress, Amazon, Ritualist, Smith of Kitava, Tactician, Lich all entered in 0.2.0
- Two ascendancies are Huntress-specific; three extend existing classes
- All five remain in the roster in 0.5.4e, but node numbers may have shifted

ITEM IMPACT
Spear & Buckler origin
Weapon class
Spears
Spears are an item class introduced in 0.2.0 alongside the Huntress. They are usable by any class, not just the Huntress, so a non-Huntress character can run a Spear in a weapon set.
Off-hand class
Bucklers
Bucklers are a distinct off-hand item class added in 0.2.0. They are not Shields; they occupy the off-hand like a shield but are a separate class, and any class can equip one.
Mechanic
Weapon sets and passives
Because Spears and Bucklers are universal, weapon-set passive point allocation interacts with them for every class. See the weapon-set-passive-points-explained guide for how equip requirements gate passive nodes.
CHANGE EXPLORER
Skill family map: spears & new supports
Spear skill family
0.2.0 added 25+ new skills overall, with a dedicated Spear family including Twister and Tempest Bell, plus Whirling Assault as a martial option. These are not Huntress-locked and can be wielded on any Spear user.
Ranged spear options (Ice Shot, Lightning Arrow)
Bow skills such as Ice Shot and Lightning Arrow appear in the linked skill set and pair naturally with spear-adjacent ranged setups in current content.
100+ Support gems
The 0.2.0 support-gem wave broadened linkcraft for the new skills, giving Spear builds more support tiers to experiment with.
OVERVIEW
Passive tree impact
The 0.2.0 class and item expansion added new passive clusters to support the Huntress, the new ascendancies, and Spear/Buckler play. Huntress-specific clusters cover spear attack speed, bleed, and crit, while the other new ascendancies gained their own dedicated nodes on the existing class trees.
Weapon-set passive points are the part most likely to confuse returning players. Because Spears and Bucklers are universal item classes, a character can carry a Spear weapon set and earn passive nodes that only activate while that set is equipped. The exact node numbers and cluster positions have shifted across 0.3 and 0.5 balance passes, so older passive-tree screenshots from 0.2.0 are not reliable.
For a usable layout, start from a current build page (such as Lightning Spear Amazon or Glacial Lance Ritualist) and the weapon-set-passive-points-explained guide rather than a 0.2.0-era planner. The ascendancy identities are unchanged even when individual node math has moved.
- New clusters for Huntress, the five ascendancies, and Spear/Buckler play
- Weapon-set passive points gate on equipped Spear/Buckler sets
- Node numbers shifted in 0.3/0.5; trust current planners
CHANGE EXPLORER
Build migration: why old node numbers differ
Passive tree reworks since 0.2.0
Later 0.3 and 0.5 balance passes moved clusters and adjusted node values, so a 0.2.0 Amazon or Ritualist tree will not match the current layout node-for-node.
Skill number tuning (Tempest Bell, Twister)
Tempest Bell's combo requirement dropped from 10 to 4 in launch hotfixes and skill numbers moved again later; Twister's multi-projectile bug was fixed at launch. Old videos misrepresent current feel.
Ascendancy respec added in 0.2.0f
0.2.0f made ascendancy respec possible, so a misallocated old tree is recoverable without a full rebuild. This changes how you should approach legacy layouts.
CURRENT APPLICABILITY
Current applicability (0.5.4e)
| Mechanic | Status | Current rule (0.5.4e) | Superseded by | Read |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Huntress class | Still current | Selectable base class in 0.5.4e with its spear-and-buckler identity intact. | — | Huntress build pages |
| Five 0.2.0 ascendancies | Still current | Amazon, Ritualist, Smith of Kitava, Tactician and Lich all remain in 0.5.4e; identities unchanged though node math shifted. | 0.3.x / 0.5.x balance | Ascendancy guides |
| Spears & Bucklers as item classes | Still current | Still universal item classes usable by any class in 0.5.4e. | — | weapon-set-passive-points-explained guide |
| Tactician current build | Needs verification | The Tactician ascendancy is current, but no verified Tactician build exists in the current source set, so its recommended build link is unknown. | unknown | Mercenary build pages |
KNOWN ISSUES
Legacy build warning
- OpenOld 0.2.0-era build videos show node numbers and cluster positions that no longer match the current passive tree after 0.3/0.5 reworks.
- TrackingPre-hotfix footage shows Tempest Bell needing a 10-hit combo and Twister with a broken multi-projectile, neither of which matches current behaviour.
- OpenSome third-party planners from 0.2.0 still lack the later Tactician / Smith of Kitava node adjustments and should not be trusted for current layouts.
COMMUNITY EVIDENCE
Community evidence
Do I have to roll Huntress to use Spears, or can my Warrior hold one?
Are Bucklers just small Shields or a different thing?
Half these nodes moved or got renumbered since I recorded this.
QUESTIONS
FAQ
Must a Spear build pick the Huntress?
No. Spears are a universal weapon class introduced in 0.2.0, so any class can equip a Spear in a weapon set. The Huntress is simply the class built around them.
If you want the Huntress identity and its Amazon or Ritualist ascendancies, then yes pick Huntress; but the weapon itself is not class-locked.
Are Bucklers weapons or shields?
Bucklers are neither a main-hand weapon nor a Shield. They are a distinct off-hand item class added in 0.2.0 that occupies the off-hand like a shield but follows its own item-class rules.
Like Spears, Bucklers are usable by any class, which affects weapon-set passive allocation.
Which ascendancies actually came from 0.2.0?
All five: Amazon and Ritualist (Huntress), Smith of Kitava (Warrior), Tactician (Mercenary), and Lich (Witch) shipped together in 0.2.0 Dawn of the Hunt.
They are still in the roster in 0.5.4e, though individual node numbers shifted in later balance.
Why doesn't my old Amazon/Ritualist/Lich video match the current tree?
Passive-tree clusters and node values were reworked in the 0.3 and 0.5 lines after 0.2.0, so old layouts will not match node-for-node. Skill numbers also moved, and Tempest Bell's combo changed at launch.
Use current build pages and the weapon-set passive guide instead of pre-0.2.0 or early-0.2.0 recordings.
