QUICK ANSWER
Quick answer
The jewel and the target Keystone are two different concepts: the socket placement is wherever you put the jewel, while the radius forms around the Keystone the jewel is bound to.
You save pathing points, not the node points - every allocated node still costs a passive point.
Reaching passives next to a distant, build-defining Keystone without spending the intermediate pathing points.
Read the exact bound Keystone in the modifier; a copy bound to the wrong Keystone is near-worthless for your build.
Assuming the jewel grants the Keystone, or that it can be chanced/divined - it is permanently Corrupted and Keystone-locked.

OVERVIEW
Overview and current versus legacy
From Nothing is one of the most build-defining jewels in Path of Exile 2 because it removes the pathing cost between your tree and a cluster of passives. When socketed into any allocated Jewel Socket, it names a single Keystone (for example Mind Over Matter, Chaos Inoculation, or Resolute Technique) and draws a fixed small radius around that Keystone. Every small and Notable passive inside that radius can then be spent with a passive point even if it is not connected to the rest of your tree.
Two ideas are easy to confuse. First, the Jewel Socket and the target Keystone are different places: you choose where to socket the jewel, but the radius appears around the bound Keystone, wherever it lives on the tree. Second, the jewel does not grant the Keystone - it only reaches the passives surrounding it. If you want the Keystone itself, you must still path to it normally.
You always pay the passive point for each node you allocate; the saving is the pathing points you skip. Because every copy is permanently Corrupted and tied to one random Keystone from a pool of 30+, the trade market is entirely organized around which Keystone a copy carries.
Current versus legacy: the core line has been stable since 0.1.0, but the pool of rollable Keystones has changed. Patch 0.3.0 added Blackflame Covenant, Hollow Palm Technique, Ritual Cadence and Walker of the Wilds while removing Acrobatics; patch 0.4.0 added Primal Hunger, Scarred Faith and Wildsurge Incantation while removing Walker of the Wilds. Older community advice built around pre-0.3 Keystone pools may not match the current drop pool, so verify the exact Keystone on any copy you buy.
- Fixed small radius around a bound Keystone, not around the socket.
- Keystone itself is NOT allocated by the jewel.
- You still pay the point for every node; only pathing is skipped.
- Always Corrupted, Limited to 1, cannot be chanced or divined.
- Drops from King in the Mists at +4 Crux of Nothingness.
- Keystone pool has changed across patches - check the current pool before buying.
VALID TARGET MATRIX
Eligibility: what the jewel can reach
The radius is a fixed small disc centered on the bound Keystone. Only nodes inside that disc are reachable; the Keystone is explicitly excluded.
| Target | Result | Detail | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| The bound Keystone | Not allocated by jewel | Only the passives around it are remotely allocated; the Keystone stays locked unless you path to it. | |
| Small passives in radius | Allocatable remotely | Any small node inside the fixed radius can be taken without connecting to your tree. | |
| Notables in radius | Allocatable remotely | Notables inside the radius are usually the highest-value targets. | |
| Nodes outside radius | Not allocatable | Only nodes inside the small radius count; distant nodes still need normal pathing. | |
| A second From Nothing | Limited to 1 | Only one From Nothing can be active on a tree at a time. |
DATA TABLE
Passive Point Savings Table
Illustrative savings. Net saved = normal path points to reach the target nodes minus the points paid via the jewel (target nodes + socket path). You still pay for every allocated node.
| Scenario | Normal path points | Points via jewel | Net saved | Notable / nodes gained | Lost normal jewel value |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Low-value example | 5 | 3 (2 nodes + 1 socket) | 2 | Two marginal small nodes | A normal rare jewel's stats |
| Reasonable example | 12 | 6 (Notable + 4 small + 1 socket) | 6 | One useful Notable + four small nodes | A normal rare jewel's stats |
| Invalid example (high save, wrong build) | 14 | 5 (Keystone-area Notable + 3 small + 1 socket) | 9 | A Notable that does not fit the build | A normal rare jewel's stats |
Numbers are illustrative; your actual saving depends on where the bound Keystone sits relative to your tree and which nodes fall inside the fixed radius. Always plan in the passive tree planner before buying.
USE FLOW
Usage: socket, allocate, plan
Reach an allocated Jewel Socket
Place From Nothing into any allocated Jewel Socket on the passive tree. The socket itself must already be allocated before the radius can form.
Identify the bound Keystone
Read the modifier to learn which Keystone the copy is bound to. A fixed small radius forms around that Keystone, wherever it sits on the tree.
Allocate nodes in the radius
Spend passive points on any small or Notable node inside the radius without connecting them to your main tree path. You still pay the point cost of each node.
Plan the Keystone path
If you also want the Keystone itself, you must still path to it normally; the jewel does not grant it.
Remove when needed
Right-click the jewel to remove it. All remotely-allocated nodes unallocate and their points are refunded.
Pathing to a distant Keystone's neighbours costs every intermediate node between your tree and that cluster.
Those same neighbours are allocated directly from the radius, skipping the connecting path entirely.
The jewel trades one Jewel Socket plus a fixed bound-Keystone limitation for the pathing points you skip.
OUTCOME ANALYSIS
Outcomes by situation
| Scenario | Benefit | Risk | Audience | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Build wants passives near a distant Keystone | Skips many pathing points to reach a far cluster | Low (if Keystone fits) | Off-class / hybrid builders | Low Strong pick when the bound Keystone matches your build's needs. |
| Wrong bound Keystone | None for the build | High (wasted slot) | Impulse buyers | High Only buy the exact Keystone your build needs; trade-filter by Keystone name. |
| Pathing is already short | Little to none | Medium (wasted socket) | Central-tree builds | Medium Skip if the target nodes are cheap to path to normally. |
| Buying on trade | Clear value curve by Keystone | Medium (overpaying for hype Keystones) | Traders | Medium Compare the bound Keystone against your build before paying a premium. |
BUILD USAGE
Build usage
From Nothing pays off when a build wants passives near a specific Keystone it cannot efficiently path to. The four personas below show where it shines.
Off-class / hybrid enabling
Reach a Keystone-adjacent cluster on the opposite side of the tree that would otherwise waste many pathing points.
↗Attribute-stacking setups
Grab attribute small nodes near a Keystone without detouring through the attribute wheel.
Distant Notable rush
Take a high-value Notable inside the radius on day one instead of pathing the long way.
Build-enabling Keystone access
Access a build-defining Keystone's neighbours (for example the Chaos Inoculation area) without committing to the full branch.
↗ALTERNATIVES
Alternatives
A normal or Rare Diamond Jewel gives you flat stats (life, attributes, resistances, damage) for the same socket with no Keystone dependency and no pathing trick. If your target nodes are cheap to path to, a Rare jewel almost always wins.
Controlled Metamorphosis is the closer cousin: it also remote-allocates, but through a ring band and at the cost of Elemental Resistances. Megalomaniac grants random Notables directly. Against the Darkness boosts small passives in a radius. Each solves a different tree problem, so pick by what your build actually needs.
Because From Nothing is Keystone-locked, the real alternative is often just pathing to the Keystone normally and using the socket for a Rare jewel - only commit when the skipped pathing clearly beats a Rare jewel's stats.
- Rare Diamond Jewel: flexible stats, no Keystone dependency.
- Controlled Metamorphosis: ring-band remote allocation with a resistance cost.
- Megalomaniac: direct random Notable allocation.
- Normal pathing: often cheaper than a wrong-Keystone copy.
DATA TABLE
Trade search by exact Keystone
How to find the copy your build needs on the official trade site. Do not copy an old trade link - filter live.
| Step | Action | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Search 'From Nothing Diamond' | Open the official trade site and type the jewel name in the main bar. |
| 2 | Add Stat Filter: Keystone name | Filter 'Passives in Radius of [Keystone] can be allocated without being connected' - for example Conduit, Resonance, or Mind Over Matter. |
| 3 | Confirm Corrupted | Every copy is always Corrupted; a non-corrupted listing is a mistake or a different item. |
| 4 | Confirm Limited to: 1 | Ensure it is the unique (not a renamed rare); only one From Nothing can be active. |
| 5 | Confirm current League | Filter to the current Early Access league and online sellers; do not reuse an old trade link. |
Because each jewel is permanently bound to one random Keystone, filter by the exact Keystone your build needs rather than buying the first copy you see.
USE / SELL / HOLD
Valuation: use, sell, or hold
For the right Keystone it is one of the strongest build-enabling jewels in the game.
RISK ANALYSIS
Risk and failure cost
| Scenario | Gain | Loss | Risk | Recommendation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Wrong Keystone | Skipped pathing if nodes fit | Jewel is near-useless for your build | High | Only buy the exact Keystone your build needs; trade-filter by Keystone name. |
| Wasted Jewel Socket | A few remote nodes | You gave up a Rare or Unique jewel slot | Medium | Compare the skipped pathing points against a normal jewel's stats. |
| Assuming the Keystone is granted | None | Keystone stays locked, build does not enable | Medium | You must still path to the Keystone; the jewel only reaches its neighbours. |
| Chance / Divine fishing | None | Wasted currency | Low | From Nothing is always Corrupted and cannot be chanced or divined; farm or trade. |
COMMUNITY EVIDENCE
Community evidence
Does From Nothing allocate the Keystone itself or only the passives around it?
A player asked whether socketing the jewel grants the named Keystone or just the surrounding nodes.
The line reads 'Passives in Radius of [Keystone] can be Allocated without being connected'. The Keystone node is not a 'passive in radius' target in this sense - it stays locked unless pathed to. Only the surrounding small and Notable nodes are remotely allocatable.
Only the passives around the bound Keystone are remotely allocated; the Keystone itself must still be pathed to normally.
Why are two From Nothing copies with the same name priced so differently?
A guide explained that each copy is bound to a different random Keystone, so price tracks Keystone relevance.
Because the Keystone is rolled at drop and locked by Corruption, a copy bound to a popular build Keystone is worth many Divines while an off-meta copy is nearly vendor trash. The item name is identical; the modifier is what matters.
Value is determined by the bound Keystone, not the item name - filter by exact Keystone on trade.
Do I still pay passive points for nodes allocated through the jewel?
A guide clarified that remote allocation removes the pathing requirement, not the node cost.
You save the intermediate pathing nodes between your tree and the radius. Every node you actually take still costs its passive point. The net saving is pathing points only.
You still pay the point for each allocated node; the jewel only skips the connecting path.
My jewel vanished after a passive-tree update - is it gone?
Database notes record that patch 0.2 removed some Jewel Sockets, which displaced jewels for some players.
When sockets are removed by a tree update, affected jewels are not deleted - they can be reclaimed. The /reclaimjewels command returns them to your inventory.
Use /reclaimjewels in town to recover jewels displaced by socket removal; they are not lost.
PROBLEMS & DIRECT ANSWERS
Problems and direct answers
The Keystone itself is not allocated
Direct answer: From Nothing only allocates the passives around the bound Keystone; the Keystone node itself must still be pathed to normally.
- Confirm you are not expecting the Keystone from the jewel; path to it if you want it.
A node in the radius shows no character-sheet change
Direct answer: You still pay the point for the node; if the stat does not change, the node may already be capped or the jewel was removed.
- Verify the jewel is still socketed and the node is inside the radius, not just near it.
Two copies look identical but one is far cheaper
Direct answer: Each copy is permanently bound to a different Keystone; price tracks Keystone relevance, not the item name.
- Inspect the modifier to read the exact bound Keystone before buying.
Jewel disappeared after a passive-tree update
Direct answer: Patch 0.2 removed some Jewel Sockets; affected jewels can be reclaimed with the /reclaimjewels command rather than being lost.
- Run /reclaimjewels in town; the jewel returns to your inventory.
